Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Detectors, Installed Before We Leave

4.8 stars, 300+ Google reviews

My techs carry carbon monoxide and smoke detectors on the truck. Ask your tech on any visit and they can install one before they leave. No second trip, no extra appointment.

I bring this up because October is when gas furnaces across Kingfisher County fire for the first time in months. A cracked heat exchanger, a loose flue pipe or a blocked vent can put carbon monoxide in the house, and you can’t see it or smell it. A working CO alarm is the only thing that tells you.

If your CO alarm is going off right now: Get everyone out of the house into fresh air, and call 911 or your gas company from outside. Do not go back in until the fire department or the gas company says it is safe. Once everyone is safe, call me at 405-375-4822 and I will check the furnace before it runs again.

Two alarms, your choice

Both are First Alert combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, so one device covers both. Both carry First Alert’s 10-year limited warranty. The difference is whether they talk to each other.

  • Sealed 10-year alarm (First Alert PRC710B): a 10-year sealed battery, nothing to change, and the whole alarm is replaced at 10 years. It works on its own. It does not link to other alarms.
  • Linked alarms (First Alert SMCO500V): when one sounds, they all sound. They link wirelessly with up to 12 First Alert alarms, and a voice alert tells you which room. They run on AA batteries you replace.

Either one is $119 installed when my tech is already at your house for a visit, or $218 for a trip just for the alarm ($99 dispatch plus $119). For a two-story house or a bedroom wing far from the furnace, the linked alarms are the ones I would pick.

For businesses, I also install commercial smoke detectors. Call me and I will look at what your building needs.

Where they go

  • Smoke alarms: inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the house, basement included (NFPA).
  • Carbon monoxide alarms: outside each sleeping area and on every level of the house (CPSC, NFPA).
  • Follow the placement instructions that come with the alarm. My tech does this for you.

Keeping them working

  • Press the test button once a month.
  • Replace the alarm by the end-of-life date printed on it. Most smoke alarms are replaced at 10 years (NFPA).
  • If an alarm chirps and you can’t tell why, call me and I will sort it out on the next visit.

It pairs with a fall furnace tune-up

The best time to add a CO alarm is the same visit I check your furnace. My standalone furnace tune-up is $229, weekdays 7am to 3pm, or get the visit with my One Visit Spring or Fall 360 plan at $199 a year. Before the first cold night, run through my free fall furnace checklist.

Questions I get

Do HVAC techs install carbon monoxide detectors in Kingfisher?

Mine do. Every Hartzell’s truck carries combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, a sealed 10-year one and a linked one. Ask your tech on any visit in my seven counties and they can install one before they leave.

How much does it cost to have a CO detector installed?

It is $119 installed when my tech is already there for a service call or tune-up, on the same visit. A trip just for the alarm is $218: $99 dispatch plus $119.

Do I need a carbon monoxide detector if I have a gas furnace?

Yes. Any home with a gas furnace, gas water heater, gas stove or an attached garage should have CO alarms outside each sleeping area and on every level. Carbon monoxide has no smell, so the alarm is the only warning you get.

What should I do if my carbon monoxide alarm goes off?

Get everyone outside into fresh air and call 911 or your gas company from outside. Do not go back in until they say it is safe. Then call me at 405-375-4822 and I will check the furnace before it runs again.

Can one alarm cover smoke and carbon monoxide?

Yes. Both alarms I stock are combination smoke and CO alarms, so one device does both jobs.

Can my smoke and CO alarms all go off together?

Yes, with the linked First Alert SMCO500V. When one sounds, they all sound, up to 12 alarms. The sealed 10-year PRC710B does not link; it works on its own. Both are $119 installed on a visit.

How often should smoke and CO alarms be replaced?

Go by the end-of-life date printed on the alarm. Most smoke alarms are replaced at 10 years. Test them monthly in between.

Want a CO and smoke alarm put in? Mention it when you book, or ask your tech at the door.
