Buying a new heating and air system in Oklahoma: what to know first

A new system is one of the biggest checks you’ll write for your house. I’ve been in this trade 47 years, and most of the bad installs I’m called to fix came from one of the same few mistakes. Here’s how to avoid them.

1. Size it to your house, not to the old unit

The tonnage on your old unit was somebody’s guess, sometimes 25 years ago. I run a Manual J load calculation: square footage, insulation, windows, which way the house faces, and duct condition. Too big and it short-cycles, leaves the house clammy and wears out early. Too small and it runs all day in July. Read more on why the load calculation matters.

2. Know what the ratings mean

RatingOnWhat it tells you
SEER2Air conditioners and heat pumpsCooling efficiency over a season, under the newer, tougher test. Higher number, less electricity for the same cooling.
HSPF2Heat pumpsHeating efficiency over a season. Matters a lot here, where a heat pump carries most of the winter.
AFUEGas furnacesHow much of the gas becomes heat in the house. An 80% furnace sends 20% up the flue; a 95%+ condensing furnace sends 5% or less.

The number that counts is the rating of the matched system, the outdoor unit and indoor coil or furnace together, listed on its AHRI certificate. I quote every system with its AHRI number so you can check it. More on SEER2 and HSPF2.

3. Single, multi or variable speed

  • Single stage: on full or off. Lowest price, does the job.
  • Multi-speed: runs at a lower speed most of the time, so longer, quieter cycles and better humidity control.
  • Variable speed: adjusts in small steps to match the house. Most even temperatures, best dehumidifying, quietest. Costs more up front.

4. Heat pump, furnace or geothermal

  • Heat pump: cools in summer and heats most of our winter with electricity. Backup heat covers the coldest nights. Do heat pumps work in an Oklahoma winter?
  • Gas furnace with AC: steady, hot heat on the coldest days if you have natural gas at the house. Heat pump vs gas furnace.
  • Geothermal: uses the steady ground temperature through a buried loop. The highest efficiency of the three and the loop lasts for generations. Weekend geothermal consultations are free. The Full Coverage Geothermal Plan is a lease option with $0 upfront.

5. The install matters more than the brand

A top-rated system installed wrong will lose to a basic one installed right. Every system I put in gets the same 12-point install standard: deep vacuum before charging, startup readings recorded, and my post-install email sends you the link to register the equipment.

6. Paying for it

New-system estimates are free. I offer financing through Synchrony (up to 18 months at 0%), Wells Fargo, Wisetack, Klarna and JB Financing. Several check your options with a soft credit pull that doesn’t touch your score.

Questions people ask me

How do I know what size AC I need in Oklahoma?

From a Manual J load calculation on your house, not from the old unit or square footage alone. I do it as part of the free estimate.

Is a higher SEER2 worth it?

It depends on how long you’ll stay and how hard the system runs. I’ll show you two or three matched options side by side so you can decide.

What is an AHRI certificate?

An independent listing of the rating for that exact outdoor unit and indoor match. It’s proof the system you’re buying hits the number on the quote.

Heat pump or gas furnace in Kingfisher Oklahoma?

If you have natural gas and like hot air on the coldest days, a furnace. If you’re all-electric or want one system for both seasons, a heat pump. Many houses do well with both: a heat pump with a gas furnace as backup.

How much does a new HVAC system cost?

It depends on size, efficiency and the ductwork. I give you an exact number on a free in-home estimate. See typical ranges on my replacement page.
