I rebuild conventional HVAC for $3,500 to $5,500 and geothermal heat pumps starting at $3,500. 1 to 2 year warranty on conventional, up to 5 years on geothermal when the loop verifies good. ## What I Know About HVAC in Central Oklahoma

45 years in this trade teaches you things no textbook covers.

### Oklahoma’s Climate Is Harder on HVAC Than Most People Realize

Central Oklahoma summers regularly hit 100-110°F with relative humidity above 80% in July and August. That combination, extreme heat
and
high moisture, means your cooling system has to handle both sensible load (temperature) and latent load (humidity removal) simultaneously. A system designed for Denver’s dry heat will leave a Kingfisher home feeling cold and clammy in August because it was never built to pull that much moisture from the air. Oklahoma winters bring the opposite problem: ground temperatures that drop fast enough to cut a standard
heat pump’s efficiency
in half, plus ice storms that stress equipment that hasn’t been properly maintained. I’ve been diagnosing both extremes in this specific climate for 15+ years.

### Oversizing Is the Most Common HVAC Mistake in Oklahoma

Most HVAC contractors in Oklahoma still size equipment using square-footage rules of thumb. The result is systems that are too large: they drop the temperature quickly, then shut off before removing enough humidity from the air. You end up cold but damp, and over time, that moisture feeds mold. The other consequence is premature compressor wear from short-cycling. A Manual J load calculation is the engineering standard that accounts for your home’s actual insulation values, window area and orientation, infiltration rate, ceiling height, and local weather data. Every replacement I do starts with one. It takes longer than a tape measure and a phone call, but it’s the only way to know what your home actually needs, not what a rule of thumb says it should need.

### Oklahoma’s Geology Makes Geothermal Unusually Effective Here

About six to eight feet below the surface in central Oklahoma, ground temperature holds steady at roughly 59-62°F year-round, regardless of whether it’s 108°F outside in August or 14°F in a January ice storm. That stable thermal mass is what a geothermal heat pump exchanges with instead of outdoor air. In summer it’s cool enough to reject heat efficiently; in winter it’s warm enough to extract heat even when a conventional heat pump would be struggling. The result is a system that runs at 300-500% efficiency year-round in exactly the conditions that hammer conventional equipment hardest. Oklahoma’s rural electric cooperatives, CKenergy, Canadian Valley, Central Electric, offer rebates up to $2,000 per ton of installed capacity. Oklahoma utility rebates remain active, CKenergy members qualify for up to $2,000/ton, OG&E customers up to $1,000/ton. A typical 3-ton install can qualify for $6,000-$8,000 in rebates before you factor in utility savings. I’m one of very few IGSHPA Accredited installers in the state, the certification that means the loop was engineered correctly for Oklahoma’s soil conditions, not just dug and filled.

### When Something Goes Wrong

The most common calls I get:
AC running but not cooling
,
furnace that won’t start
,
warm air blowing from the vents
, and
water leaking from the air handler
. In most cases these can be diagnosed and resolved in a single visit. I charge a flat $99 dispatch fee and $111 diagnostic, the $111 diagnostic fee applies toward your repair if you approve the work. No stacking fees, no surprises. If the repair cost is significant, I tell you before I start. If replacement makes more financial sense than repair, I’ll say so honestly and give you both options with real numbers.

Both the 25C (air-source) and 25D (geothermal) federal tax credits expired December 31, 2025. Oklahoma’s co-op rebate programs, especially CKenergy, are now the primary savings vehicle for geothermal installs in 2026:

Federal 25D credit on a $20,000 install

$6,000

Section 25D expired 12/31/2025, Oklahoma utility rebates remain fully active

CKenergy rebate on 3-ton system (2026)

$6,000

$2,000/ton × 3 tons (still active)

For CKenergy members, the rebate math is comparable to what the federal credit offered, and it comes as a direct rebate check from your co-op, not a tax credit that requires you to have sufficient tax liability to use it.

## What Hartzell’s Provides to Process Your Rebate

Oklahoma’s electric cooperatives require specific documentation from the installing contractor to process a geothermal rebate. I provide all of it as part of every installation:

- AHRI certification numberfor the installed equipment

- EER rating documentationconfirming the system meets co-op efficiency requirements

- Contractor license information(Oklahoma Master HVAC License)

- IGSHPA accreditation certificate(CKenergy and some other co-ops prefer accredited installers)

- Completion date and system specificationsfor the rebate application

- Equipment invoiceshowing equipment and installation cost

I’ve been doing this for 15+ years. When my crew installs your geothermal system, the rebate paperwork is handled. You don’t have to figure it out yourself.

## Why Electric Cooperatives Love Geothermal

Electric co-ops like CKenergy are member-owned, they exist to benefit their customers, not shareholders. Geothermal aligns perfectly with their mission: it shifts peak summer cooling load away from the hottest hours (because the ground stays cool), it adds beneficial electric load in winter (heating is electric, not gas), and it keeps member money local instead of going to propane or natural gas companies.

The result is that Oklahoma co-ops actively want to help you go geothermal, and they put real money behind it. CKenergy’s $2,000/ton is one of the highest co-op geothermal rebates in the United States.

## Common Questions

How do I find out if I’m a CKenergy member?

Check your electric bill, your utility name and account number are on the bill. If it says “CKenergy” or “CK Energy Electric Cooperative,” you’re in their service territory. You can also call CKenergy at 405-375-4822 to confirm. Alternatively, call me at 405-375-4822. I know the territory and can often tell you which co-op serves your address.

Do I have to apply for the rebate myself?

Most Oklahoma co-op rebates require a member application after the installation is complete. I provide all the documentation you need to submit the application. For some programs, I can submit on your behalf. I’ll walk you through the process at installation time.

Is the CKenergy rebate a check or a bill credit?

CKenergy typically processes geothermal rebates as a direct payment to the member. Contact CKenergy at 405-375-4822 to confirm the current payment method and processing time.

What efficiency rating does my geothermal system need to qualify?

Most Oklahoma co-op programs require the system to meet EER minimums. CKenergy’s program references current IGSHPA and ENERGY STAR standards. I only install equipment that qualifies. I use ClimateMaster systems that meet or exceed all co-op efficiency requirements. Ask me for details on the specific model being installed.

Can I combine the CKenergy rebate with other incentives?

You can only receive rebates from your electric utility (you’re served by one utility). However, if Oklahoma launches the HEEHRA federal rebate program (for low-to-moderate income households, not yet available in Oklahoma), that could potentially stack with co-op rebates. Both the 25C and 25D federal tax credits expired December 31, 2025. Oklahoma utility co-op rebates remain fully active and are stackable with the HEEHRA program when it launches in Oklahoma.

Does the rebate apply to geothermal system replacements or only new installations?

CKenergy’s 2026 program applies to
new installations and retrofits
(note: the prior replacement unit rebate has been discontinued). Other co-ops like Cimarron Electric offer rebates for both new and replacement geothermal systems. Confirm with your specific co-op which scenarios qualify.

# Geothermal Heat Pump Cost in Oklahoma (2026)

I get asked some version of this question almost every week: “Dave, what’s geothermal actually going to cost me?” And I’ll give you the same answer I give every homeowner who calls. The honest number before utility rebates is $15,000 to $30,000 installed, depending on your lot size, loop type, system tonnage, and how much ductwork I’m working with. After rebates, that number can drop by $8,000 or more in the right county. I’ve been doing geothermal installs in Central Oklahoma for over 15 years, I hold my IGSHPA accreditation, and I’m a ClimateMaster GeoElite dealer. When you call me, you get a real quote from someone who has done hundreds of these, not a ballpark from a salesman who’s never drilled a loop field.

Oklahoma’s Most Experienced Geothermal Installer: 45 Years, IGSHPA Accredited, ClimateMaster GeoElite

Last updated: April 2026

## What Does Geothermal Cost in Oklahoma? (Before Rebates)

Most residential geothermal systems in Central Oklahoma fall in the range of
$15,000 to $30,000 installed
. That wide range is real and here’s why it exists:

- System size (tonnage):A 3-ton unit for a 1,500 sq ft home costs less than a 5-ton unit for a 3,500 sq ft home. Expect roughly $5,000 to $6,000 per ton as a starting point.

- Loop field type:Horizontal loops (1+ acre available) cost less to install than vertical loops. Vertical drilling on a tight lot adds cost.

- Existing ductwork condition:A house with solid ductwork saves on install. A house with leaky, undersized ducts adds work and materials.

- Desuperheater water heating:Optional add-on that uses waste heat to pre-heat your water heater. Worth adding if you’re doing the dig anyway.

## Oklahoma Utility Rebates: What You Can Actually Capture in 2026

Federal tax credits (Section 25C and 25D) expired December 31, 2025. They are gone for 2026 installs. But Oklahoma utility rebates are still fully active, and in CKenergy territory, they are the best rebates in the state.

## Real-World Rebate Math: 4-Ton System, CKenergy County

Example: 2,200 sq ft home, Canadian County (CKenergy territory)

- System: 4-tonClimateMastergeothermal, vertical loop field

- Installed cost:$20,000

- CKenergy rebate: 4 tons x $2,000 =$8,000

- Out-of-pocket after rebate: $12,000

With energy savings of 40-60% vs. a gas/electric system, most homeowners in CKenergy territory see payback in 7-10 years. After that it runs near-free for another 15+ years.

In OG&E territory (Enid, NW OKC), that same 4-ton system drops by $4,000 from the rebate alone. In Kingfisher city, Cimarron Electric adds $600 on top of the KPWA rebate. I walk every customer through their specific utility before we quote, so you always know the net number before you sign anything.

## Loop Field Types and Cost Factors

The loop field is the buried heat-exchange system. It lasts 50+ years and it’s the heart of why geothermal is worth it. Two main options in Oklahoma:

### Horizontal Loop

Requires 1+ acre of open land. Trenches 5-6 feet deep. Lower drilling cost than vertical. Best option for rural properties with space. Most common in Kingfisher, Blaine, and Canadian counties.

Typical loop cost: lower

### Vertical Loop

Drill 150-300 feet deep per bore hole. Works on any lot size, including town lots and suburban homes. Higher drilling cost but same long-term performance. Common in Enid and OKC metro installs.

Typical loop cost: higher

### Loop Field Cost Comparison

Loop Type
Typical Cost
Best For

Horizontal
$3,500-$5,500
Rural lots with 1+ acres

Vertical
$5,500-$8,500
Town lots, smaller properties

Pond/Lake
$2,500-$4,500
Properties with water access

Loop costs are included in the total system price. I size and install the loop, so you don’t need a separate contractor.

## System Life and Long-Term Value

- Heat pump unit:20-25 years with proper maintenance (versus 12-15 for a conventional system)

- Loop field:50+ years. You’ll replace the unit twice before you touch the loop.

- Energy savings:40-60% lower heating and cooling bills vs. conventional HVAC

- No outdoor unit:Nothing exposed to Oklahoma hail, wind, or ice storms

## Financing Options

I work with three lenders so you can fit this into your budget without draining savings.

CKenergy also offers a 6% loan program (4-7 year terms) for members who qualify. Ask me about stacking a CKenergy loan with the rebate for maximum upfront savings.

## Frequently Asked Questions

How much does geothermal cost in Oklahoma?

Most residential geothermal systems in Oklahoma run $15,000 to $30,000 installed before rebates. System size (tonnage), loop field type (horizontal vs. vertical), and existing ductwork condition are the main cost drivers. After utility rebates, especially in CKenergy territory where you can capture up to $24,000 back, many homeowners land in the $10,000 to $16,000 range out of pocket.

What counties get the CKenergy geothermal rebate?

CKenergy’s $2,000 per ton
(Source:
CKenergy
)
rebate (max $24,000) covers members in 10 Oklahoma counties: Blaine, Caddo, Canadian, Comanche, Custer, Dewey, Grady, Kiowa, Roger Mills, and Washita. Kingfisher County is NOT in CKenergy territory. If you’re not sure which utility serves your address, I can help you confirm before we start any quote work.

Is geothermal worth it in Oklahoma?

For most Central Oklahoma homeowners with a qualifying lot, yes. Oklahoma’s extreme temperature swings from summer to winter are exactly the conditions where geothermal outperforms conventional HVAC. Typical energy savings run 40 to 60 percent off your heating and cooling bills. The loop field lasts 50+ years, the heat pump runs 20 to 25 years, and there’s no outdoor unit to take Oklahoma weather damage. In CKenergy territory, the payback period with rebates is often 7 to 10 years.

Do federal tax credits still apply to geothermal in 2026?

No. Section 25D, the federal geothermal tax credit, expired December 31, 2025. It is not available for 2026 installations. Oklahoma utility rebates from CKenergy, OG&E, OEC, Cimarron Electric, and KPWA remain fully active and are the best savings available right now. If you had a 2024 or 2025 install and didn’t claim the credit, talk to your tax professional about carryforward rules.

How long does geothermal pay for itself in Oklahoma?

With utility rebates factored in, most of my customers in Central Oklahoma see payback in 7 to 12 years. In CKenergy territory where a 4-ton system can collect $8,000 back, the math gets very good very fast. After payback, you’re running one of the most efficient heating and cooling systems available for the remaining 10 to 15+ years of the equipment’s life. I can build out a rough payback estimate during your free quote visit based on your current utility bills.

What is the difference between horizontal and vertical loop geothermal?

Both use the same heat-exchange principle but the installation method differs. Horizontal loops are trenched 5 to 6 feet deep across an open area of 1 acre or more. They cost less to install and are common on rural properties. Vertical loops are drilled 150 to 300 feet straight down, require minimal land, and work on any lot size. Drilling costs more per foot but the final installed price difference is often $1,500 to $3,000 depending on soil conditions. I assess your lot during the free estimate visit and tell you which option is better for your situation.

## How the CKenergy Geothermal Rebate Works

The process is straightforward, but it requires a licensed contractor to submit the paperwork on your behalf. Here is how it works from start to finish:

- Confirm eligibility:Your property must be in CKenergy’s service territory and the geothermal system must meet minimum efficiency requirements. I verify this before you spend a dollar.

- Get a free estimate:I size the system, run a Manual J load calculation, and give you the full installed price. Free, no obligation.

- Install the system:Installation typically takes 3 to 5 days for residential, depending on the loop configuration (horizontal, vertical, or pond loop).

- I submit the rebate application:I handle the paperwork with CKenergy. You need to provide a copy of your CKenergy electric bill showing your service address and account number. That’s it on your end.

- Receive the rebate check:CKenergy processes rebate applications and issues a check directly to you. Processing time is typically 4 to 8 weeks after submission.

Ten Oklahoma counties are in CKenergy’s service territory and qualify for the $2,000 per ton geothermal rebate (maximum $24,000): Blaine, Caddo, Canadian, Comanche, Custer, Dewey, Grady, Kiowa, Roger Mills, and Washita. Your property must receive electric service from CKenergy specifically, so it’s worth confirming your account is with them before planning a geothermal installation. Call CKenergy at 405-656-2322 or visit ckenergy.coop to verify your address.

Is Kingfisher County in CKenergy territory?
No. Kingfisher County is not in CKenergy territory. Kingfisher County is primarily served by Cimarron Electric Cooperative and, for city of Kingfisher customers, KPWA (Kingfisher Public Works Authority). Cimarron Electric offers a $600 geothermal rebate. If you’re in Kingfisher County and want to go geothermal, call me at 405-375-4822 and I’ll confirm which rebate applies to your address and handle the paperwork from there.

How do I apply for the CKenergy geothermal rebate?
You don’t have to apply yourself. When I install a geothermal system for a CKenergy customer, I handle the rebate application. I submit the required documentation to CKenergy after installation is complete, including equipment specs, efficiency ratings, and installation records. You’ll need to provide a copy of your CKenergy bill showing your account number and service address. CKenergy processes the application and issues a rebate check directly to you, typically within 4 to 8 weeks. Call me at 405-375-4822 or get a free estimate online.

Can I combine the CKenergy rebate with federal tax credits?
The federal Section 25D tax credit for geothermal heat pumps expired on December 31, 2025. It is no longer available for new 2026 installations. If you installed a geothermal system in 2024 or 2025 and didn’t claim the credit, you may still be able to claim it on your prior-year return, but consult a tax professional on that. For 2026 installs, the CKenergy rebate is the primary incentive available, and it is significant. On a 4-ton system in Canadian County, that’s $8,000 back. Financing through Synchrony, Wells Fargo, or Wisetack is also available.

How much can I get back from CKenergy for a geothermal system?
CKenergy pays $2,000 per ton of geothermal capacity installed, with a maximum rebate of $24,000. Most residential homes use a 3-ton to 5-ton system, which translates to $6,000 to $10,000 in rebates. A 3-ton system returns $6,000. A 4-ton system returns $8,000. A 5-ton system returns $10,000. The rebate is paid as a check directly to you after installation. I handle the application paperwork. Call 405-375-4822 for a free estimate and exact sizing for your home.

Does CKenergy offer any financing for geothermal systems?
Yes. In addition to the rebate, CKenergy offers low-interest loans at 6% for 4 to 7 years to help finance geothermal installations for members in eligible territory. This can be a good option layered on top of the $2,000/ton rebate, especially for larger systems. I also offer financing through Synchrony, Wells Fargo, and Wisetack. Call me at 405-375-4822 and we’ll look at the numbers together to find the option that works for your budget.

45 years of HVAC diagnostics. Master HVAC License. NATE Certified. Dave Hartzell, Kingfisher, Oklahoma, 405-375-4822.

In 45 years of HVAC work across central Oklahoma, I’ve diagnosed thousands of systems. Most problems fall into a handful of categories, and most homeowners can narrow down the issue before they call, which saves time and money. This guide covers the most common symptoms, what they usually mean, what you can safely check yourself, and when you need a tech on-site. Oklahoma weather is specific: 105°F summers, ice storms in January, red dirt in everything, and humidity that swings hard in spring. Some of these diagnoses are Oklahoma-specific for that reason.

## AC Not Cooling (Running But Warm Air)

Check first (no tech needed):
Is the thermostat set to COOL, not FAN? Is the filter clogged? Is the outdoor unit running? Is a circuit breaker tripped?

### Low Refrigerant

Signs: AC runs constantly but barely cools. Ice forming on the indoor coil or copper lines. Warm air from vents even after 20+ minutes of runtime. Low refrigerant doesn’t mean you’re “out”, systems lose charge slowly through leaks, and a 10% undercharge costs you 20-30% of cooling capacity.
This requires a tech.
I’ll check suction pressure, superheat, and subcooling, find and repair the leak, then recharge. Adding refrigerant without fixing the leak is a temporary fix, it’ll be low again in a season.

### Dirty Evaporator Coil

Oklahoma’s red dirt and cottonwood season are brutal on coils. A clogged evaporator coil blocks airflow and causes the system to short-cycle or ice over. Signs: weak airflow from vents, ice on coil or lines, system that cools for an hour then stops. Cause is almost always deferred filter changes, if the filter goes 6+ months, the dirt migrates to the coil.
Coil cleaning is a service call
, not a DIY fix, cleaning solution, proper technique, and coil fin integrity matter.

### Frozen Evaporator Coil

If you see ice on the indoor unit or the lines running to it: turn the system to FAN ONLY (no cooling) and let it thaw for 2-4 hours before calling. Running it frozen damages the compressor. Causes: low refrigerant, dirty coil, blocked return air, low outdoor temps (running AC when it’s below 60°F outside). Once it’s thawed, if it freezes again, call for service.

### Failed Capacitor

The capacitor starts the compressor and fan motors. In Oklahoma summer heat, capacitors fail more often than almost any other component, heat degrades them. Signs: the outdoor unit hums but the fan isn’t spinning, or the compressor doesn’t start. Sometimes you’ll hear a single click from the unit, then silence.
This is a $150-250 repair
in most cases, and I can usually confirm it on the same visit. Don’t let an HVAC company upsell you to a new system because a capacitor failed.

### Dirty Condenser Coil (Outdoor Unit)

The outdoor unit rejects heat. When the coil fins are coated with cottonwood, dead grass, and red dirt, which happens every spring and fall in Oklahoma, the system can’t reject heat efficiently. It runs longer, uses more power, and may short-cycle on high-pressure lockout.
You can spray the outdoor coil gently
from the inside out with a garden hose (low pressure, top to bottom). Don’t use a pressure washer, you’ll damage the fins.

### Compressor Failure

The compressor is the most expensive component in the system. Signs of compressor failure: the outdoor fan runs but the unit doesn’t cool at all, breaker trips repeatedly, grinding or clanking noises from the outdoor unit. Compressor replacement runs $1,200-2,500 depending on system size, at that cost, I’ll always discuss whether repair or replacement makes more financial sense. See our
Repair-or-Replace Calculator
.

## Furnace Not Heating

Check first:
Is the thermostat set to HEAT above current room temp? Is the filter clogged (most common cause of furnace lockout)? Is the gas on? Did the furnace reset itself? Most modern furnaces have a reset button on the burner assembly.

### Dirty Filter Causing Limit Switch Lockout

This is the #1 cause of furnace calls in Oklahoma. A clogged filter restricts airflow. The heat exchanger overheats. A safety device called the limit switch shuts the furnace off. The furnace may try to restart a few times, then lock out entirely.
Check your filter first.
If it’s gray and you can’t see light through it, replace it, then reset the furnace by turning the thermostat off for 30 seconds. If it fires and runs normally, the filter was the problem. If it locks out again, call me, the limit switch itself may have failed or the heat exchanger needs inspection.

### Igniter Failure

Modern furnaces use a hot surface igniter instead of a standing pilot. These glow orange-red when working. If the furnace calls for heat, you hear the draft inducer run, but no ignition, the igniter is likely cracked or failed. Signs: you can smell gas briefly then nothing, the inducer runs but no heat.
Igniter replacement is typically $180-300
and is one of the most common furnace repairs I do every winter.

### Flame Sensor / Control Board Issues

If the furnace lights, burns for 2-5 seconds, then shuts off and tries again repeatedly, that’s a flame sensor issue. The sensor is coated with oxidation and can’t verify flame. Sometimes cleaning it resolves the issue; sometimes replacement is needed ($120-250). Control board failures are less common but cause erratic behavior: igniter cycles, blower runs without heat, lockout codes on the display.

### No-Heat in an Oklahoma Ice Storm

Ice storms hit central Oklahoma hard, January 2023 and February 2021 knocked out heat for thousands of homes. If your furnace is in an unconditioned space (garage, crawlspace) and it’s below freezing: the condensate drain can freeze on high-efficiency furnaces, causing a pressure switch lockout. Pour warm water on the drain line or bring it inside. Check that combustion air and exhaust vents are clear of ice, a blocked flue is a safety lockout. If the power is on and you still have no heat, call for emergency service, we prioritize no-heat calls in ice events.

## Heat Pump Problems

### Heat Pump Not Heating in Cold Weather

Air-source heat pumps lose efficiency below 35-40°F because they’re trying to pull heat from increasingly cold outdoor air. Below 20°F, most units are running at 60-70% of their rated capacity, the backup electric heat strip kicks in, which is expensive. If your heat pump is blowing lukewarm air in cold weather: that’s partially expected behavior. If it’s blowing cold air, check that it’s not stuck in cooling mode (reversing valve issue) and that the backup heat strip is working.

### Heat Pump Defrost Cycle

In cold weather, frost builds on the outdoor coil. The system periodically reverses to defrost, during this cycle it blows cooler air for 5-10 minutes and may look like it’s steaming. That’s normal. A heat pump that stays in defrost mode, or one where the outdoor unit is encased in solid ice that doesn’t clear, has a problem: failed defrost board, stuck reversing valve, or low refrigerant. Call for service.

### Geothermal vs. Air-Source in Oklahoma Winter

Geothermal doesn’t have these cold-weather problems. The ground at loop depth holds 58-62°F year-round in central Oklahoma, regardless of what’s happening above ground. A geothermal unit during a January ice storm performs at the same efficiency as it does in October. No defrost cycle. No backup heat strip. This is the core operational advantage of geothermal in Oklahoma’s climate.

## AC Leaking Water

The indoor evaporator coil produces condensation as it cools air. That water drains through a condensate line to a floor drain or outside. When it backs up, water leaks from the air handler.
This is the most common summer service call in Oklahoma.

Causes: the condensate drain clogs with algae, mold, and debris, especially in Oklahoma’s humid spring. DIY fix: find the drain line (usually a 3/4” PVC pipe), pour a cup of distilled white vinegar into the drain port on the air handler, wait 30 minutes, flush with water. If it’s clogged solid, a wet-dry vacuum on the outdoor end of the drain line will usually clear it. If water is leaking from the coil itself, not the drain, that’s a frozen coil situation, see above.

## High Electric Bill from HVAC

Oklahoma summer electric bills get high. Here’s what drives HVAC-related spikes:

- Dirty filtersystem runs longer to move the same air. Replace monthly in summer.

- Dirty outdoor coilcan’t reject heat efficiently; system runs harder and longer.

- Low refrigerant10% undercharge = 20-30% efficiency loss. System runs constantly but barely cools.

- Duct leaks20-30% of cooled air lost to attic or crawlspace is typical in older Oklahoma homes. Manual J and duct testing can quantify this.

- Undersized systemequipment too small runs 100% duty cycle in July without ever reaching setpoint.

- Heat pump backup stripif your heat pump is using the backup electric heat strip in cold weather, bills spike. This is normal below 20°F but not above 35°F, above that temperature, the backup shouldn’t be running.

- Old equipmenta 15-year-old 10 SEER unit vs. a modern 16-18 SEER unit saves 30-40% on cooling costs.

## Thermostat Issues

Before calling for any HVAC problem, verify the thermostat is actually calling for the right mode. Modern smart thermostats (Ecobee, Nest, Honeywell T6) have diagnostic modes that show whether the system is receiving the call for heat or cool. A thermostat that’s lost its schedule, or where the batteries have died, can look like a system problem.

If you have a smart thermostat and your HVAC isn’t responding: check the C-wire (24V common wire). Smart thermostats need continuous power, if they’re running on batteries only, some features don’t work reliably. I install thermostats as part of most service calls and can usually troubleshoot remotely if you describe what the screen shows. See
Thermostat Installation
for more.

## Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my AC running but not cooling the house?

Most common causes in Oklahoma: clogged air filter, low refrigerant from a leak, frozen evaporator coil, failed capacitor preventing compressor startup, or a dirty outdoor condenser coil. Check your filter first, if it’s gray and clogged, replace it. If the system still isn’t cooling after a clean filter, it needs a tech. Call 405-375-4822 for a $111 diagnostic that gets credited toward repair if you proceed within 14 days.

Why won’t my furnace turn on in Oklahoma winter?

Most common: clogged filter causing the limit switch to shut it down for safety. Replace the filter first, then reset the furnace (thermostat off 30 seconds, back on). If that doesn’t fix it: igniter failure, flame sensor issue, or on high-efficiency furnaces, a frozen condensate drain in ice storm conditions. A furnace that won’t turn on in cold weather is a priority call, 405-375-4822.

How do I know if my HVAC system is low on refrigerant?

Signs: the system runs constantly but can’t cool the house to setpoint, ice forms on the copper lines or indoor coil, and the air from vents is warmer than it should be after 20+ minutes of runtime. You can’t check refrigerant level yourself, it requires gauges and EPA 608 certification. I test suction pressure, superheat, and subcooling, find and repair the leak, then recharge to manufacturer specs. Adding refrigerant without fixing the leak is a temporary measure that doesn’t address the underlying problem.

Why is my heat pump blowing cold air in winter?

Air-source heat pumps lose efficiency in cold weather because they pull heat from cold outdoor air, there’s less heat available. Below 35°F you may feel lukewarm air (normal), and the backup electric heat strip should kick in. If the heat pump is blowing genuinely cold air: it may be stuck in cooling mode (reversing valve issue), the backup heat strip may have failed, or refrigerant may be low. Geothermal heat pumps don’t have this problem, they pull from 58-62°F ground temperature regardless of outdoor weather.

How much does an HVAC diagnostic cost in Kingfisher Oklahoma?

My diagnostic fee is $111. That covers me arriving, testing the system, diagnosing the root cause, explaining the problem to you in plain language, and giving you written quotes before I leave. The $111 is credited toward any repair or replacement you approve within 14 days, it’s not a charge on top of repair, it’s applied to the invoice. The $99 dispatch fee applies to all service calls and is separate from the diagnostic. For new system installs, the estimate is free.

Why does my AC drain line keep clogging in Oklahoma?

Oklahoma’s humidity and heat create ideal conditions for algae and mold growth in condensate drain lines, especially in spring and early summer. The line runs from the air handler to a floor drain or outside. Prevention: pour a quarter cup of white vinegar down the drain port on your air handler monthly. If it’s already clogged, use a wet-dry vac on the outdoor end, or pour a cup of vinegar and let it sit 30 minutes. I clear condensate drains on most summer maintenance visits as a standard step.

When is it too hot or cold to wait for an HVAC appointment?

In Oklahoma summer, 100°F+ with no AC is dangerous for elderly, children, and pets, that is an emergency call. In winter, below 35°F with no heat is a freeze-risk situation, especially in older homes without good insulation. I prioritize no-heat calls in winter and no-cool emergencies in peak summer heat. Call 405-375-4822 any time for emergency service. Emergency rates apply ($99 dispatch + $111 diagnostic + repair), but safety comes first.

Why does my HVAC electric bill spike in Oklahoma summer?

Common causes: dirty air filter (replace monthly in summer), dirty outdoor coil (clean with garden hose spring and fall), low refrigerant, duct leaks losing 20-30% of conditioned air to the attic, or aging equipment running inefficiently. A 15-year-old 10 SEER unit uses 30-40% more electricity than a modern 16-18 SEER unit. A Tune-Up PMA at $138/yr often catches the dirty coil and filter issues that are driving the bill up, and will pay for itself in efficiency gains over the summer.

### Still Not Sure What’s Wrong?

Last updated: April 2026

I’ve been installing
geothermal heat pumps
in central Oklahoma since the early 2000s. I’ve done horizontal loops on wheat-ground farms, vertical bores in tight Edmond lots, and pond loops on Canadian River properties. This guide covers everything I wish more homeowners knew before they called me: how the system actually works, what Oklahoma soil does to the numbers, real costs, every active rebate, and what the ROI looks like on a real central Oklahoma property.

## How a Geothermal Heat Pump Works

A geothermal heat pump doesn’t create heat by burning fuel. It moves heat that already exists in the ground. In winter, fluid circulates through a loop buried in the earth, absorbs the ground’s stable 58-62°F temperature, and carries that heat into your home. In summer, the process reverses: heat from your home is transferred into the cooler ground. The refrigeration cycle inside the unit amplifies this exchange, producing 3 to 5 units of heating or cooling energy for every 1 unit of electricity consumed. That ratio is called COP (Coefficient of Performance) or EER for cooling.

For context: a high-efficiency gas furnace is 96% efficient, it converts 96 cents of every dollar of gas into heat. A geothermal heat pump operating at COP 4.0 delivers 400% efficiency. Oklahoma’s ground temperature holds that number up year-round.

Key components:

- Ground loopHDPE pipe buried in trenches, bores, or ponds; lasts 50+ years

- Heat pump unitrefrigerant cycle inside the conditioned space; lasts 20-25 years

- Desuperheateroptional add-on that preheats domestic water at near-zero cost

- Air handler or hydronic distributiondelivers conditioned air or radiant heat

## Oklahoma Ground Temperatures by Region

The ground temperature at loop depth (8-20 ft for horizontal; 150-400 ft for vertical) is the single biggest factor in system performance. Oklahoma sits in a favorable band, warm enough that loops don’t exhaust in deep winter like they can in Minnesota, but not so warm that summer rejection becomes a problem.

Region

Mean Ground Temp (8-20 ft)

Soil Type

Loop Notes

Kingfisher / Northwest OKC
59-61°F
Clay / sandy loam
Good horizontal; some rock at 200+ ft

Enid / Garfield County
58-60°F
Red clay / loam
Horizontal viable; no major bedrock issues

OKC Metro (Logan / Canadian)
60-63°F
Clay, some shale
Vertical preferred on small lots

Major County / Western OK
57-60°F
Sandy / mixed
Horizontal on large acreage; good thermal conductivity

Blaine / Custer Counties
59-62°F
Red bed clay / sandstone
CKenergy territory, best rebates in state

## Loop Types: Which One Works on Your Property

### Horizontal Loops (Most Common in Rural Oklahoma)

Trenches dug 6-8 feet deep, typically 400-600 ft of pipe per ton of capacity. Requires about 1,500-2,000 sq ft of yard per ton. On a 3-ton system that’s roughly a half-acre of accessible, unobstructed ground. Cost is lower than vertical, trenching equipment is cheaper than drill rigs. Most Kingfisher County, Blaine County, and Major County properties qualify. I’ve run horizontal loops in wheat stubble fields, pastures, and large residential yards all over central Oklahoma.

### Vertical Loops (Suburban and City Lots)

Bores drilled 150-400 ft deep, with U-bend pipe inserted and grouted. One bore per ton, typically 4-6 bores on a residential system. Drill rigs are expensive, adds $1,500-3,000 per bore versus trenching. Required when horizontal isn’t an option: Edmond and Yukon lots, in-town Guthrie, historic district properties. Performance is excellent, deep ground temps are rock-stable year-round.

### Pond / Lake Loops

If you have a half-acre or larger pond at least 8 ft deep, coiled loop mats sink to the bottom. Most cost-effective installation method when the pond qualifies, no trenching or drilling. I’ve done pond loops on Canadian River-area properties in Canadian County. The pond must not freeze solid and must be large enough to handle thermal load without temperature creep.

### Standing Column Wells

Less common in Oklahoma, requires the right aquifer conditions. Water is drawn from a well, run through the heat exchanger, and returned to the same well. Not widely applicable in central Oklahoma’s geology, though there are pockets in Garfield County where it’s viable.

## Geothermal Cost in Oklahoma: Real Numbers

Geothermal is a higher upfront investment than conventional HVAC. Here’s what I see on actual central Oklahoma installations in 2026:

## Return on Investment: Three Oklahoma Scenarios

Scenario

Net Cost After Rebates

Annual Energy Savings

Simple Payback

3-ton, CKenergy territory (Blaine Co.), horizontal loop
~$12,000
$900-$1,400/yr
9-13 years

3-ton, OG&E territory (Logan Co.), vertical loop
~$19,000
$800-$1,200/yr
15-24 years

4-ton, Kingfisher Co., horizontal loop (Cimarron Electric)
~$21,400
$1,100-$1,600/yr
13-19 years

The loop field outlasts the heat pump unit, typically 50+ years versus 20-25 for the indoor unit. On the second unit replacement, you’re only replacing the mechanical equipment, not re-digging the loop. That second cycle is where geothermal becomes dramatically cheaper than conventional on a lifecycle basis.

## Geothermal vs. Conventional Heat Pump

Geothermal pulls heat from 55 degree ground loops year round, so it runs 400 to 600 percent efficient. A conventional air heat pump fights 105 degree summer air and 10 degree winter air, dropping to 200 to 300 percent.

## The Installation Process: What to Expect

A typical geothermal install runs 3 to 5 days: day 1 loop drilling (4 to 6 bores, 200 to 300 feet each), day 2 trenching and header, day 3 indoor unit and ductwork tie-in, days 4 to 5 commissioning and flush.

- Site assessmentI walk the property, confirm utility territory, check soil conditions, measure lot dimensions, review existing ductwork. Free for new system estimates.

- Manual J load calculationI size the system to the actual heat loss/gain of your specific home. Oversizing a geothermal system is expensive and wastes rebate dollars.

- Loop designhorizontal layout or bore count determined by load calc and lot constraints. IGSHPA-standard design software, not guesswork.

- Utility rebate pre-applicationI handle the paperwork. Some utilities (CKenergy) require pre-approval before equipment is ordered.

- Loop field installationtrenching or drilling subcontractor I’ve worked with for years. HDPE pipe fusion-welded, pressure-tested before burial.

- Indoor unit installationClimateMaster or WaterFurnace unit set, refrigerant charged, controls wired. Desuperheater plumbed if included.

- Commissioning and testingloop pressure, water temperature delta, refrigerant charge, airflow across all zones. I don’t leave until the numbers are right.

- Rebate submissionI submit the required documentation to your utility. You receive the check directly, typically 4-8 weeks post-installation.

## Brands I Install

I install ClimateMaster (GeoElite dealer), WaterFurnace, and Bosch geothermal units, plus Trane and Amana for conventional pairings.

ClimateMaster
I’m a GeoElite Dealer, their highest dealer tier. Manufactured in Norman, Oklahoma. Tranquility and Trilogy series cover residential applications from 1.5 to 6 tons. Some of the highest EER ratings in the industry.

WaterFurnace
Strong residential and commercial lineup. The 7 Series is their most efficient unit, variable-speed compressor with COP up to 5.3. Good fit for larger homes with hydronic distribution.

Bosch
Good value in the 2-3 ton residential market. SM series is straightforward to install and service. I use Bosch on budget-sensitive projects where ClimateMaster’s premium tier isn’t necessary.

## Frequently Asked Questions

How much does geothermal cost in Oklahoma?

Installed cost before rebates runs $15,000-$30,000 depending on system size, loop type, and soil conditions. After CKenergy’s $2,000/ton
(Source:
CKenergy
)
rebate (available in Blaine, Canadian, Custer, and 7 other counties), a 3-ton horizontal system can come down to $12,000-$16,000. OG&E territory gets $1,000/ton. The federal 30% Section 25D tax credit expired December 31, 2025 and is no longer available for 2026 installs. Call 405-375-4822 for a free estimate specific to your property.

Is the federal geothermal tax credit still available in 2026?

No. Section 25D, which covered 30% of geothermal installation costs, expired December 31, 2025. It is no longer available for systems installed in 2026. Oklahoma utility rebates from CKenergy, OG&E, Cimarron Electric, OEC, KPWA, and CVEC remain fully active. These are the rebates to focus on in 2026.

How much land do I need for a geothermal system in Oklahoma?

For a horizontal loop (the most common type in rural central Oklahoma), plan on 1,500-2,000 sq ft of accessible ground per ton of capacity. A 3-ton system needs roughly a half-acre of unobstructed yard or field. Vertical loops require no yard space beyond the drill rig access, just a few bore locations, but cost more per bore. Pond loops are an option if you have a qualifying body of water. I assess every property before proposing a loop type.

What is the payback period for geothermal in Oklahoma?

In CKenergy territory with horizontal loops, I typically see 9-13 years to simple payback. OG&E territory with vertical loops runs 15-24 years. Those numbers assume current electric rates, as rates rise, payback shortens. The loop field lasts 50+ years, so after the first equipment cycle you’re only replacing the indoor unit, not re-digging. On a 40-year horizon, geothermal almost always wins on total cost.

Does geothermal work well in Oklahoma winters?

Better than air-source heat pumps do. Air-source heat pump efficiency drops when it gets below 20-30°F outside because the outdoor coil has less heat to pull from cold air. Geothermal doesn’t care about outdoor temperature, the ground at loop depth holds 58-62°F year-round in central Oklahoma. A geothermal unit during a January ice storm runs at the same efficiency as it does in October. No auxiliary heat strip running. No defrost cycle.

Can I add a desuperheater for water heating?

Yes, and it’s one of the best value-adds in geothermal. A desuperheater captures waste heat from the refrigeration cycle and transfers it to a storage water heater. During the cooling season, it can provide near-free hot water, heat that would otherwise be rejected to the ground loop. Annual water heating costs typically drop 40-70%. I include desuperheater hookup in most residential installs. You still need a backup water heater element for peak demand or heating-season periods when the geo unit isn’t running as much.

What is IGSHPA accreditation and why does it matter for Oklahoma rebates?

IGSHPA is the International Ground Source Heat Pump Association, the industry’s certification body for geothermal design and installation. IGSHPA Accredited Installer means I’ve completed their formal training and passed testing on ground loop design, soil thermal analysis, and system commissioning. Several Oklahoma utility rebate programs (including CKenergy) require that the installer hold IGSHPA accreditation. If your contractor isn’t IGSHPA accredited, you may not qualify for the rebate even if the system is installed correctly.

How is geothermal maintained compared to a regular HVAC system?

The ground loop requires essentially no maintenance, HDPE pipe with no moving parts, buried and forgotten. The indoor unit needs the same annual maintenance as any heat pump: filter changes, coil check, refrigerant verification, blower motor inspection, condensate line clear. Because there’s no outdoor coil exposed to weather, grass clippings, hail, and Oklahoma red dirt, geothermal units tend to stay cleaner and have fewer refrigerant issues over time. I offer geothermal-specific maintenance plans starting at $360/yr. See
Geothermal Maintenance Plans

I’ve been installing geothermal heat pump systems in Oklahoma for years, and I know the soil conditions, loop depths, and design considerations that make a Central Oklahoma geothermal install work right the first time. I’m IGSHPA Accredited and a ClimateMaster GeoElite Dealer, which means I’ve completed the training and certifications that most HVAC contractors haven’t. With 45 years total in the trade, geothermal is one of the things I’m most passionate about.

## Free Estimate + Oklahoma Utility Rebates

All geothermal estimates are
free
. I’ll evaluate your property, size the loop field, and give you a complete installed cost with no obligation.

Active rebates that may apply to your install:

- CKenergy:$2,000 per ton (Blaine and Canadian counties)

- OG&E:$1,000 per ton on geothermal systems

- OEC:$400 to $700 per ton (okcoop.org/rebates/)

- KPWA:Confirmed rebates for Kingfisher area customers

- CVEC:Rebates confirmed (mycvec.coop)

Rebate eligibility depends on your utility provider. I’ll tell you exactly what you qualify for on your free estimate call.

## Why Geothermal Makes Sense in Oklahoma

- Lower utility bills year-round. Geothermal systems move heat instead of generating it. In Oklahoma’s climate, homeowners regularly see 40 to 60% reductions in heating and cooling costs.

- 25-year system lifespan. The ground loop lasts 50 years or more. The indoor unit runs in a conditioned space, so it lasts longer than conventional equipment. You install it once and you’re done for decades.

- Oklahoma utility rebates offset the upfront cost. Several Oklahoma utilities offer rebates of $1,000 or more per ton, which can mean $4,000 to $6,000 back on a typical residential install.

## What Geothermal Customers Say

“Dave walked us through the whole process from loop field design to the OG&E rebate paperwork. Our utility bills dropped by more than half the first summer. Best home improvement decision we ever made.”

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐, Kingfisher County homeowner

“I talked to three contractors before Dave. He was the only one who was actually IGSHPA certified and could explain the ground loop design. The install went exactly as he said it would. Five stars, no question.”

## Geothermal Installation Questions

How much does geothermal installation cost in Oklahoma?

A residential geothermal installation in Oklahoma typically runs $15,000 to $30,000 installed, depending on home size, loop field type, and soil conditions. With utility rebates from OG&E ($1,000/ton), OEC ($400 to $700/ton), or others, many homeowners see $3,000 to $8,000 back. The long-term energy savings usually deliver a full payback within 7 to 12 years. Call 405-375-4822 for a free site-specific estimate.

What Oklahoma utility rebates are available for geothermal heat pumps?

Several Oklahoma utilities offer active geothermal rebates in 2026. OG&E offers $1,000 per ton. OEC offers $400 to $700 per ton. KPWA and CVEC both have confirmed rebate programs for their service areas. Eligibility depends on your utility provider. I’ll determine what you qualify for on your free estimate call at 405-375-4822.

How long does a geothermal heat pump installation take in Oklahoma?

Most residential installs take two to four days total. The loop field drilling or trenching is usually done in one day by the loop contractor. I then install the indoor unit and make all the connections. From your first call to a running system, plan on one to two weeks to schedule everything. I coordinate the whole project so you don’t have to manage multiple contractors.

Does geothermal work well in Oklahoma’s climate?

Geothermal works extremely well here. The ground temperature in Central Oklahoma stays around 60 to 65 degrees year-round. That stable ground temperature is what geothermal uses as its heat exchange medium, which is far more efficient than the 100-degree summer air or the 20-degree winter air that conventional equipment has to fight against. Oklahoma’s climate is actually ideal for geothermal performance.

What is IGSHPA accreditation and why does it matter for geothermal installation?

IGSHPA is the International Ground Source Heat Pump Association. Their Accredited Installer certification requires specific training in loop field design, system sizing, and installation standards. It matters because most HVAC contractors have not completed this training. A poorly designed loop field will underperform for the life of the system. I’m IGSHPA Accredited and a ClimateMaster GeoElite Dealer, so I design and install these systems the right way.

## Where Kingfisher County Came From

On April 22, 1889, a pistol fired at noon and thousands of people rushed across the border in the Oklahoma Land Run. Kingfisher County was born that afternoon, out of dust and chaos and people who had nothing and needed everything. The county was not even called Kingfisher at first. It was County Five. On August 5, 1890, voters chose the name “Kingfisher” over “Hennessey” and “Harrison” in a public election. Kingfisher won.

The Chisholm Trail ran through this county. Not as a tourist attraction. As the working highway that moved millions of Texas longhorns north to Kansas railheads between 1867 and 1884. The western freight route came right through the Kingfisher Stage Station, which sat on what is now downtown Kingfisher. My shop is on S Main St. That land had cattle drovers camping on it 140 years ago. On July 6, 1874, a freighter named Pat Hennessey was tied to his wagon wheel and burned alive by Cheyenne warriors near the Kingfisher-Garfield county line. The town of Hennessey is named after him. That is the kind of history that does not make it into the tourism brochures.

Sam Walton was born in Kingfisher on March 29, 1918. W.C. Coleman sold his first lantern here in 1903, and that is where the Coleman Company started. The county has always been a place where people with a vision showed up and built something from scratch.

The Volga Germans settled here too. German families who had lived on the Russian steppes before emigrating, looking for flat farmland and religious freedom. They named one of their towns Kiel, after the German port city. In 1918, with World War I anti-German sentiment running hot, the community voted to rename it Loyal, a whole town choosing a new name to prove its place in this country. The population today is about 71 people. I have been in homes there. The land and the people in this county have always had more history than most folks outside it realize.

# AC Repair in Kingfisher, OK, Diagnosed Right the First Time

$99 Dispatch  ·  $111 Diagnostic  ·  4.8 Stars / 279 Reviews

I spent 12 years at Sammy’s Heat, Air & Sheet Metal in Watonga before opening Hartzell’s about 15 years ago. Sammy ran a Carrier dealership and trained me to diagnose before I ever touched a wrench, find the root cause, not just the symptom, and be straight with the customer about what you found. That’s still how I run AC repair calls in Kingfisher, Hennessey, Watonga, Okarche, and every town in between. My techs are paid a percentage of the completed invoice, they have a personal stake in getting it right, not in running up the ticket.

- $111 diagnostic. Upfront pricing before any work begins., you’re not paying twice

## Repair or Replace?

A system under 10 years old with a repair under half the replacement cost, repair. A system over 15 years old, multiple failures, or a failed compressor, replacement usually makes more sense. I’ll run the numbers with you and tell you what I’d do if it were my house. I don’t make more money steering you toward replacement, my margin on a repair call is fine.

## What a Diagnostic Visit Looks Like

Here’s exactly what happens when Hartzell’s arrives for an AC service call:

- $99 dispatch, $111 diagnostic, collected upfront. Diagnostic fee. Upfront pricing before any work begins.. 15% off all repairs with Dave’s 360 Planmaintenancevisits.

- System walkthrough first, thermostat, filter, breaker, outdoor disconnect. I don’t open the equipment until I’ve eliminated the easy stuff.

- Electrical checks, capacitor tested under load, contactor inspected, compressor amp draw measured. If the capacitor failed, I check whether the compressor caused it.

- Refrigerant check with calibrated gauges, superheat and subcooling measured against manufacturer spec. A refrigerant leak is found and repaired, handled perEPA Section 608 refrigerant rules, I don’t just recharge and leave.

- Airflow and coil condition, static pressure measured, blower checked, evaporator coil inspected for fouling or ice.

- Written upfront quote before any work begins, you know the number before I touch a wrench.

- Repair or honest recommendation, if it doesn’t pencil out on an older system, I say so. I’d rather tell you now than have you spend $800 on a system that fails again in six months.

## Common AC Repair Costs in Oklahoma

Typical installed costs. Exact pricing depends on equipment, access, and parts. Upfront pricing provided before work begins, no surprises.

Repair

Typical Range

Notes

Run capacitor

$150-$400

Most common AC repair in Oklahoma; often same-day

Contactor

$175-$400

Controls compressor and condenser fan switching

Refrigerant recharge (R-410A)

$350-$700+

Leak locate + repair + recharge; R-410A prices have risen sharply with the A2L phaseout. Recharging without fixing the leak is a short-term fix only.

Blower motor

$450-$850

Indoor air handler motor; variable-speed motors cost more

Condenser fan motor

$350-$650

Outdoor unit fan, fails frequently in Oklahoma summer heat

Evaporator coil cleaning

$175-$350

Dirty coils cut efficiency and cause freeze-ups

Expansion valve (TXV)

$450-$800

Controls refrigerant flow to evaporator coil

Compressor

$1,400-$3,000+

Major repair, replacement often makes more sense on systems 10+ years old

Condensate drain

$100-$250

Clogged drain causes water damage and float-switch shutoff

## Trane & Mitsubishi AC Repair Specialists

Factory-trained on Trane and RunTru equipment with dealer-level access to ComfortLink™ II communicating system fault codes. I carry common Trane parts and can diagnose XV20i, XV18, XR16, and XR15 series issues that generic contractors can’t read without the right tools.

Mitsubishi Diamond Dealer

Factory-trained on M-Series and P-Series ductless mini-split systems with the specific Mitsubishi tooling most local contractors don’t carry. Multi-zone systems, hyper-heat models, and Kumo Cloud™ smart controls all in scope. Mitsubishi Diamond Dealer qualifies your system for a
12-year parts warranty
.

I also service all other major brands, Carrier, American Standard, Lennox, Rheem, Goodman, Daikin, and more.

## Affordable AC Repair in Kingfisher, Transparent Pricing, No Surprises

When people search for affordable HVAC repair in Kingfisher, they usually mean two things: they want to know the cost upfront, and they don’t want to get talked into work they don’t need. That’s how I’ve run this shop for 45 years. Here’s what you actually pay:

- $99 dispatch fee, covers the service call. Not credited toward the repair.

## What I Check on a Diagnostic Visit

When I arrive, I work through the system in order, indoor unit first, then outdoor, then electrical. Here’s exactly what gets checked before I give you a quote.

Indoor Unit

- Evaporator coil, freeze-up, dirt, or damage

- Blower motor and wheel, speed, amperage, CFM

- Condensate drain, clog or overflow risk

- Filter and return air restriction

- Refrigerant line temperatures (supply vs. return delta)

Outdoor Unit

- Condenser coil, dirt, bent fins, airflow blockage

- Condenser fan motor and blade, amps and spin

- Refrigerant pressures, both high and low side

- Compressor amp draw vs. rated value

- Refrigerant leaks, electronic detection at coil and fittings

Electrical & Controls

- Capacitor, start and run microfarad readings

- Contactor, pitting, coil voltage, contact gap

- Disconnect and breaker, fuse size, heat damage

- Thermostat wiring and call sequence

- Safety controls, high-pressure, low-pressure, float switch

Three outcomes, explained upfront:
After the diagnostic I’ll tell you exactly which bucket you’re in,
straightforward repair
(part swap, same day),
monitored operation
(system is functional but aging, I discuss timeline), or
replacement makes more sense
(failed compressor, refrigerant conversion cost exceeds value, system over 15 years). No pressure either way, I’ll tell you what I’d do if it were my house.

## Common AC Repairs, What to Expect

These are real-world ranges from jobs I’ve run in Kingfisher County. Every job gets the $111 diagnostic first, that fee is credited toward the repair if you approve within 14 days.

Ranges include parts and labor. Actual cost depends on equipment brand, part availability, and access. Final quote given before any work starts.

Blower motor giving out? It might be time for an ECM upgrade.

Most of the repair calls I run end up at the blower motor sooner or later. The old PSC motors burn out, run hot, and waste electricity. When yours fails, you can swap it for the same PSC part, or step up to an Azure ECM variable-speed motor that runs quieter, uses 60 to 75 percent less power, and lasts longer. I lay out the real numbers, side by side, on my ECM upgrade page.

- OEM PSC replacement: $1,912

- Standard PSC blower motor: $2,187

- Azure ECM variable-speed upgrade: $2,304 to $2,438

See the full ECM blower motor upgrade breakdown →

## Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my AC running but not cooling?
Common causes include a dirty filter, frozen coil, low refrigerant, or a tripped breaker at the condenser. I start with simple checks, then test pressures and airflow to find the issue.

How fast can you get here in Kingfisher County?
Scheduling varies by day and weather. I offer same-day slots when available and prioritize no-cool calls. Call 405-375-4822 and I’ll offer the next open time.

What will the diagnostic include?
I verify thermostat settings, inspect the outdoor unit, check the blower and coil, measure electrical components, and record refrigerant readings. You’ll get options before any repair.

Do you charge a trip or diagnostic fee?
Yes, I use a flat diagnostic fee to cover testing and a written estimate. If you approve the repair, I apply that visit toward the work when possible.

Can you work on older systems or R-22 units?
I service many older models. For R-22 units I evaluate condition and cost-of-ownership so you can decide between a repair today or a planned replacement later.

What brands do you service?
I service most major brands found in central Oklahoma and follow manufacturer specs for parts and charging procedures.

Do you credit the diagnostic fee toward the repair?
Yes. If you approve a repair or replacement within 14 days of the diagnostic, the $111 fee is credited toward your invoice. The $99 dispatch fee covers the service call itself and applies regardless.

Can warranties be transferred to a new homeowner?
Most manufacturer warranties on equipment I install are transferable. Contact me within the transfer window, typically 30 to 90 days of the home sale, and I will handle the paperwork.

## 2026 Repair Upgrades I Offer (Honest Pricing)

Most shops pad bills around new refrigerants and motor upgrades. I will not. Here is what is real on a typical AC repair call in 2026:

- R-454B and R-32 refrigerantsare now standard on new equipment. Both are mildly flammable A2L refrigerants, both cost more per pound than R-410A, and both require certified handling. I stock both. R-454B recovery $445, R-32 recovery $395. Customers should hear this from me before they hear it from a competitor padding a bill.

- Blower motor upgrade ladder.PSC 1/3 HP installed runs $2,187 (115V) or $2,230 (230V). Azure ECM variable-speed runs $2,304 to $2,438. About $250 more for a quieter motor and 30%+ fan energy savings. Worth it on a long-haul system.

- Hard Start Kit upgrade $415 installed.Cheap insurance on a compressor that already worked too hard. High attach on any compressor service call.

- BEST surge protection bundle $1,225 installed.Control board spike protection plus transformer replacement plus in-line fuse. One $1,225 fix beats one $3,195 compressor replacement after the next Oklahoma lightning storm.

- Whole-home dehumidifier $2,895 (90 pint+).Premium IAQ tier on top of the $2,295 70-pint unit. Often added when the evaporator or blower is already open.

Call 405-375-4822 and I will tell you the truth about your system before quoting any of these.

# HVAC Service Near Me in Kingfisher, Oklahoma | Hartzell’s Heat & Air

My shop is at 602 S Main St, right in the middle of Kingfisher. I was born here, went to school here, and I have been fixing HVAC in this town for over 15 years. When you call me, I am already five minutes away, not routing a truck out of Oklahoma City.

Serving Kingfisher, OK · NATE Certified · Same-Day Available · 405-375-4822

## Kingfisher, Oklahoma: A Town I Know Well

This town has history in it. The Land Run of April 1889 turned a railroad stop into a community overnight. The Chisholm Trail ran right through here, and the museum on Zellers Ave is still standing. W.C. Coleman sold his first lantern right here in Kingfisher in 1903 before the Coleman Company became a household name. I grew up on those same streets, and I know what holds this place together.

What that history means for HVAC is this: a lot of the homes near downtown were built between 1910 and 1945. They have attic ductwork that was added decades after the house was built, wall furnaces that were grandfathered in, or oversized units somebody dropped in during the 1970s to avoid doing the duct work right. I have been inside those houses hundreds of times. I know what to look for before I even open the access panel.

The newer builds on the outskirts are a different story, but I know those too. 4.8 stars and 279 reviews later, I am still the guy answering the phone and sometimes the one showing up at your door. That does not change just because the neighborhood does.

Kingfisher also has Harman’s Dairy, one of the oldest dairies in Oklahoma, second oldest in the state. That is not a chain or a corporate operation. That is a Kingfisher family business that has been part of this community for generations. When a town this size holds onto something like that, it tells you something about the people who live here. I have been on service calls in homes where the family worked the dairy going back to their grandparents. That is the Kingfisher I know.

Common HVAC Issues We Fix

- AC not cooling or weak airflow

- Short cycling or high energy bills

- Loud compressor or unusual smells

## About Kingfisher, Oklahoma

Kingfisher is the county seat of Kingfisher County and Hartzell’s home base. The city’s mix of older bungalows near downtown, newer subdivisions on the outskirts, and commercial buildings along US-81 means we see every kind of HVAC situation, aging duct systems in older homes, undersized equipment in flip-remodels, and commercial rooftop units that need more than a quick tune-up. We’ve worked on all of it. If you’re in Kingfisher and your system fails, we’re usually the closest HVAC contractor to your door.

## Frequently Asked Questions

What HVAC problems are most common in older Kingfisher homes?

The homes near downtown Kingfisher, mostly built between 1910 and 1950, almost always have ductwork that was added after the original construction. That means ducts strapped to floor joists in crawl spaces, taped with old cloth tape that gave up decades ago, or runs so long the back bedrooms never get enough airflow. I have been in hundreds of these houses. The first thing I check is supply-return balance. Most of those systems are moving maybe 60 percent of the air they should be. Once the duct leakage gets addressed, people are shocked how much better their existing equipment works.

Is geothermal realistic for a Kingfisher County home?

Yes, and Kingfisher County is actually good geothermal territory. The soil profile here supports horizontal loops on most properties that have room, and vertical bores work well on tighter lots. KPWA serves Kingfisher city and Cimarron Electric serves the surrounding rural areas, both with geothermal rebates confirmed for 2026. I am IGSHPA accredited and have done geothermal installs throughout this county. Call me at 405-375-4822 and I will tell you straight whether your property and budget make it a good fit.

What heating system do most Kingfisher farmhouses use?

Older farmhouses in the Kingfisher area tend to run propane, either a propane furnace or an older floor furnace that has been patched along for 40 or 50 years. Some have propane boilers with baseboard heat. I see a lot of these when I go out on rural calls, and the common issue is the system was sized for how the house was heated originally, not how the house is occupied now. When families add on a room or insulate the attic, the old propane setup gets overwhelmed. A heat pump with a propane backup is usually the right answer out here, and OEC and Cimarron Electric both have rebates that make it pencil out.

Does Hartzell’s service the rural areas around Kingfisher?

Yes. Kingfisher is my home base. I service all of Kingfisher County including Loyal, Omega, Hennessey, Cashion, Dover, and the rural county roads between them. There is no rural surcharge, and I do not subcontract those calls out. If you are outside the city limits and wondering whether I will come out, call 405-375-4822 and I will tell you exactly when I can be there.

How much does AC repair cost in Kingfisher, Oklahoma?

My dispatch fee is $99, and the diagnostic is $111, which gets credited toward the repair if you move forward within 14 days. Most common AC repairs, refrigerant, capacitor, contactor, are done the same day. I quote the repair price before I do any work so there are no surprises. If the repair cost is going to approach what a new system costs, I will tell you that and give you a free estimate on replacement. Call 405-375-4822 to schedule.

# Geothermal Heat Pump Maintenance in Oklahoma

I have been servicing geothermal systems in central Oklahoma for over 15 years, and I can tell you that a ground-source heat pump is the most efficient HVAC equipment you can own in this part of the country. I can also tell you it is the most misunderstood when it comes to maintenance. Most contractors around here have never touched a geo system. I am IGSHPA Accredited, a ClimateMaster GeoElite Dealer, and I have 45 years of HVAC experience behind me. When your geothermal system needs its annual service, I know exactly what to look for in the loop, the heat exchanger, and the refrigerant circuit. Background reading:

## Why Geothermal Maintenance Is Different From Air-Source

A standard air-source AC or heat pump lives above ground. You can visually inspect the condenser, charge the refrigerant, and clean the coil without any specialized loop knowledge. A geothermal system is a different animal. The loop field is buried underground or submerged in a pond, carrying a water-antifreeze mixture under pressure. The heat exchange happens at the earth-to-fluid interface, not air-to-refrigerant. That means:

- Loop pressure matters.A closed loop that has lost pressure allows air into the system, which reduces heat transfer efficiency and can damage the circulation pump. Oklahoma clay soils shift significantly through freeze-thaw and drought cycles, which can stress loop connections over time.

- Antifreeze concentration matters. In Kingfisher County, overnight temps have dropped to single digits during ice storm events. If the propylene glycol or methanol concentration in the loop is too low, you are at risk of a frozen loop, which can mean a cracked manifold or damaged pump. I test antifreeze concentration at every service visit.

- Heat exchanger fouling is silent.Scale buildup inside the refrigerant-to-water heat exchanger does not announce itself. It just quietly reduces capacity and forces the compressor to work harder, raising your electric bill by 10 to 20 percent before you even notice.

- No outdoor coil to catch your eye. With air-source equipment, a dirty condenser is visible. With geo, the clues are in the numbers: entering water temperature, leaving water temperature, delta-T, and amp draw. You need instrumentation and manufacturer specs to interpret them correctly.

## What My Geothermal Maintenance Visit Includes

Here is exactly what I cover on every geothermal maintenance call. I do not skip steps because a system looks clean.

### Loop System

- Loop pressure check at the system pump and manifold

- Repressurization if pressure is below spec (included in Geo 360 plan; available as add-on on other plans)

- Antifreeze concentration test (propylene glycol or methanol per system spec)

- Pump amp draw and flow verification

- Purge valve and isolation valve inspection

### Heat Exchanger

- Entering and leaving water temperature measurement

- Delta-T check against manufacturer performance table

- Heat exchanger cleaning where accessible

- Refrigerant-to-water coil inspection for fouling or scale indicators

### Refrigerant Circuit (DX systems)

- Refrigerant charge verification (suction and discharge pressures vs. entering water temp)

- Superheat and subcooling check

- TXV or EXV operation

### Electrical and Controls

- Contactor inspection (pitting, burning, contact resistance)

- Capacitor test with a capacitor meter

- Electrical connection tightening at all terminals

- Safety switch operation: high pressure, low pressure, flow switch, freeze protection

- Control board visual inspection

- Thermostat calibration and stage verification

### Air Side

- Air filter replacement or inspection

- Blower motor amp draw and RPM check (ECM or PSC)

- Supply and return duct temperature measurement

- Condensate drain flush and pan inspection

### Overall System Performance

- COP estimate based on measured temperatures and amp draw

- Comparison against last visit data (if on plan)

- Written report with findings, readings, and recommendations

## Desuperheater and Water Heater Check

If your geothermal system has a desuperheater, it is one of the most cost-effective features on the unit. During cooling season, the desuperheater pulls waste heat off the hot gas line and pre-heats your domestic water. When it is working right, it can handle 25 to 50 percent of your water heating load for free during the summer months.

I check the desuperheater connection lines, water flow valve, heat exchanger surfaces, and loop integration at every full maintenance visit. If you have a storage tank paired with it, I check the tank connections and anode rod condition. Small problems in the desuperheater circuit often go unnoticed until the water heater has to work overtime, which shows up on your electric bill.

For more information on how geothermal desuperheaters work and what they save you, see my
geothermal desuperheater guide
.

## Oklahoma-Specific Seasonal Maintenance Tips

### Spring (Before Cooling Season)

Spring is the best time for your annual geothermal service in central Oklahoma. I want to see the system before it carries its first 100-degree load in June. Key items: verify loop pressure before peak demand, clean the heat exchanger if you skipped it in fall, replace the filter, check the thermostat staging to cooling mode. If I find a low refrigerant charge or fouled heat exchanger in April, you have time to fix it before the Oklahoma summer puts you in a bind.

### Before Ice Storm Season (October-November)

Kingfisher County gets ice storms. In January 2023 and again in early 2024, we had multi-day events with temperatures in the single digits. For geothermal systems, the concern is antifreeze concentration in the loop. If that mix is diluted from a prior water addition or a slow leak, a four-day deep freeze can turn a routine situation into a cracked loop manifold. I check antifreeze every fall for customers on my plans. If you are not on a plan, give me a call in October.

### Summer Peak Load (June-August)

Oklahoma summers run the geo unit almost continuously. If your loop entering water temperature climbs above 90 degrees Fahrenheit in deep summer, that is a sign the loop field is undersized or the system is running outside its efficiency window. I can tell you what your entering water temps should look like for your loop type and size, and whether what I am measuring is within normal range for a July afternoon in central Oklahoma.

## What You Can Do Yourself vs. What Needs a Technician

### Homeowner Tasks

- Change or inspect the air filter every 1 to 3 months

- Keep the area around the indoor unit clear of clutter

- Check thermostat settings when seasons change

- Listen for unusual noises and call before they become bigger problems

- Make sure pump and loop room access panels are not blocked

### Needs a Trained Geo Tech

- Loop pressure test and repressurization

- Antifreeze concentration check and adjustment

- Refrigerant charge verification or addition

- Heat exchanger cleaning and performance test

- Electrical connections, capacitors, contactors

- Safety switch and control board diagnostics

- Desuperheater circuit inspection

I get calls from homeowners who tried to add water to a low loop or who pulled the loop access cap without the right fittings. Pressurized loop systems do not forgive mistakes. The antifreeze in the loop is food-safe, but it belongs in the loop, not on your floor. Save the loop work for someone who does this regularly.

## Geothermal Maintenance Plans

I offer three geothermal maintenance plan (PMA) levels. All three cover your annual service visit, priority scheduling, and discounts on repairs. The difference is how much repair coverage and added services are included.

### Geo Basic Plan: $360/year

Annual geothermal tune-up, priority scheduling, and 10% parts discount. Best for newer systems in good condition.

### Geo Plus Plan: $428/year

Everything in Basic plus expanded inspection items and additional labor coverage on repairs. Good middle ground for systems 5 to 12 years old.

### Geo 360 Plan: $499/year

Most comprehensive.
Includes annual tune-up, loop repressurization if needed, priority emergency response, and maximum repair discounts. Best for systems over 10 years old or any system where the loop pressure has been low in the past.

## Frequently Asked Questions

How often should geothermal systems be serviced in Oklahoma?

I recommend one full maintenance visit per year for most ground-source systems. If you have a desuperheater heating your water, twice a year is better. Oklahoma summers push geothermal systems hard from May through September, so a spring tune-up before peak cooling season is the smart move. Fall is also a good time to verify your antifreeze concentration before ice storm season.

What does geothermal maintenance include?

A proper geothermal tune-up covers the full loop system: pressure check, antifreeze concentration, pump operation, and entering/leaving water temps. I also clean the heat exchanger, verify refrigerant charge on DX systems, inspect and tighten all electrical connections, test contactors and capacitors, flush the condensate drain, replace the air filter, calibrate the thermostat, test all safety switches, and run a full performance test. I give you a written report of all readings before I leave.

How much does geothermal maintenance cost in Oklahoma?

My flat-rate tune-up is Tune-Up PMA at $138/yr. The $99 dispatch fee applies to all service calls. For ongoing coverage, Geo Basic is $360 per year, Geo Plus is $428 per year, and Geo 360 is $499 per year. The Geo 360 plan includes loop repressurization if needed, which as a standalone service typically runs $150 to $300. Call me at 405-375-4822 for specifics on your system.

Can I maintain my own geothermal system?

You can change the air filter, keep the unit clear, and check thermostat settings. That is genuinely helpful. Everything involving the loop, refrigerant, electrical, or heat exchanger needs a trained geo technician. Pressurized closed loops with antifreeze are not something to open up without the right fittings and procedure. I have gotten calls from homeowners who tried to add water to a low loop and ended up with antifreeze on the floor and no idea how to reseal the system. Save yourself that call and let me handle the loop.

Does geothermal maintenance include loop pressure checks?

Yes, every time I service a geothermal system I check the loop pressure. Low loop pressure is one of the most common performance problems on systems that are five or more years old. If the loop needs repressurization, that is included in my Geo 360 plan ($499 per year). On the Basic and Plus plans it is available as an add-on service.

What is a desuperheater and does it need maintenance?

A desuperheater is a small heat exchanger built into the geothermal unit that captures waste heat from the hot gas line and uses it to pre-heat your domestic water. In cooling season it can cover 25 to 50 percent of your water heating load at no extra cost. The desuperheater connections, water flow valve, and heat exchanger surfaces need to be checked annually. I cover this at every full geo maintenance visit. For a full explanation, see my
desuperheater guide
.

What happens if I skip geothermal maintenance?

The most common first sign is a higher electric bill with no obvious cause. Then comfort starts slipping. Eventually the compressor is working far outside its design window because of a dirty heat exchanger or low loop pressure. Compressor replacement on a geothermal unit can run $3,000 to $6,000 or more, and that is if the rest of the system is worth saving. A Tune-Up PMA at $138/yr once a year is cheap insurance on a system that cost $15,000 to $30,000 to install.

## The Story

### It started with trash duty.

I grew up watching my father work with his hands. By age ten I was picking up trash at Lee Hartzell Electric in Woodward, Oklahoma, not because I had to, but because that is where my family worked and that is what you did. By thirteen I was an apprentice electrician. Junior and senior year of high school I was on a work-release program, out at noon, leading a four-man crew of adults who were older than me in every way except experience.

Those men drove. I ran the work. A lot of them went on to build solid careers of their own. I still think about them.

Dave Hartzell, Owner, Hartzell’s Heat & Air. Kingfisher, Oklahoma.

### From Woodward to Watonga, and everything that came with it.

After Autry Technology Center in Enid, one of Oklahoma’s finest vo-tech schools, I discovered HVAC was not just a trade. It was the thing I was built for. I went on to Oklahoma State University, where I met two men who would become lifelong friends: Sammy Tomlinson and John Thomas. All three of us went on to build HVAC companies rooted in the same values. John Thomas founded Thomas Heat, Air & Refrigeration down in Roff. Sammy built Sammy’s Heat, Air & Sheet Metal in Watonga, where he had been serving the community since 1973.

I spent twelve years at Sammy’s. Twelve years learning from Sammy and his parents, not just about systems and equipment, but about the people of this region. How they think. What they care about. What it means to shake someone’s hand and actually mean it. I sold Carrier systems to Kingfisher-area families for over a decade. Some of those families are now on their third system. Their children are calling me for the first time.

On the job. I have been doing this work in central Oklahoma for 45 years.

Still doing it right, every time. Same standard from day one.

### My first shop, Woodward, 1989.

In 1989, I opened Hartzell’s Refrigeration in Woodward. That was my first shop with my name on the door. It is where I earned my first city HVAC license and learned what it meant to carry payroll, warranty, and reputation on my own. Old customers in northwest Oklahoma still recognize the 580-334-2814 number from that era. Watonga came after, then Sprint, then Kingfisher. The work has always been the same: do it right, sign your name to it, stand behind it.

### He also fought fires for five years.

During my years in Watonga, I served as a volunteer firefighter. Five years of showing up when things went wrong for other people, not for a paycheck, but because that is who I am. That did not change when I came home to Kingfisher.

### Then Sprint called.

I spent seven years as the onsite engineer for Sprint, managing what would become the largest project in the company’s history, a classified national infrastructure build that required the kind of precision most contractors never face. The project involved a $20 million infrastructure upgrade with an additional $10 million component. I delivered it under budget, ahead of schedule, and with zero FCC outages on a live network.

Every piece of equipment on that project was commissioned before I left the site. Every system had an operating manual, a maintenance manual, and an identifier tag. Every door. Every fixture. Sprint asked me to name my price. I gave them a job done right instead.

“The man who helped build the infrastructure that could locate your cell phone to within one foot is the same man who will size your home’s HVAC system to within one ton, and stand behind it.”

Late night on the roof of a classified national infrastructure facility, Sprint’s largest project in company history. The project ran around the clock.

### Hartzell’s was the next step. Not a detour, the destination.

When I founded Hartzell’s Heat & Air, I named it after the place where I first learned what work was, Lee Hartzell Electric, Woodward, Oklahoma. I brought with me everything Sammy taught me, everything my father taught me, and a standard of documentation and accountability most HVAC companies in this state have never been asked to meet. My daughter Shelby runs operations today. When I make a commitment to a customer, Shelby is the one who makes sure it happens.

## Why My Work Is Different

A lot of HVAC companies pay their technicians by the hour. I do not. My technicians are compensated based on the quality and completeness of the work they complete, which means the person in your home has a direct personal stake in getting it right. There are no incentives here to run up hours, oversell equipment, or recommend repairs that are not needed. The incentive is to solve the problem correctly the first time and leave a customer who is glad they called.

That is how my people are rewarded, and it is how this company has maintained a 4.8-star rating across 279 Google reviews.

My technicians are paid to solve problems, not to spend time.
That difference shows up in your home every single time.

I back every job with a
6-month labor guarantee
. I use
Trane Connected Diagnostics
for remote monitoring on qualified systems. And I size every system using
Manual J load calculations

HVAC Sizing Estimator
How many tons does your Oklahoma home need?

The most common mistake I see is systems that are the wrong size. Oversized systems short-cycle and leave your house humid. Undersized systems run constantly and never keep up. I’ve been doing Manual J load calculations for 47 years, this estimator gives you a solid ballpark before we talk. Enter your details below.

This estimator uses Oklahoma climate zone data (Zone 3/4 mixed-humid) and Rule-of-Thumb sizing guidelines. Actual sizing requires a Manual J calculation accounting for your specific home’s envelope, ductwork, orientation, internal heat gains, and local design temperatures. Oversizing by more than 0.5 tons causes humidity problems and short cycling. Do not size by square footage alone.

## HVAC Sizing in Oklahoma: What You Need to Know

Oklahoma sits in Climate Zone 3/4, mixed-humid, with brutal summers (design temperature 99°F in Kingfisher) and cold enough winters that you need real heating capacity. The rule of thumb is 400, 500 BTU per square foot for cooling, but that changes dramatically based on your home’s envelope. I have seen two identical-square-footage homes in the same neighborhood need systems half a ton apart because of insulation and window differences.

The industry standard sizing method is Manual J. It accounts for your home’s exact dimensions, ceiling heights, insulation values, window U-factors, orientation, internal heat gains (appliances, people, lighting), ductwork efficiency, and local design temperatures. I run Manual J on every install because guessing wastes your money one way or another.

What happens if my HVAC system is oversized?

An oversized system short-cycles, it cools or heats too fast, shuts off, and never runs long enough to remove humidity. In Oklahoma’s humid summers, this leaves your house cold but clammy. Short-cycling also wears out the compressor faster. Most contractors oversize because a bigger unit makes customers feel confident. The right size is the one that runs the longest cycles at design conditions.

What happens if my system is undersized?

It runs constantly and cannot maintain temperature on the hottest or coldest days. Your energy bills are high, the equipment wears out faster, and you are uncomfortable. On a 100°F Oklahoma day, an undersized system will fall behind by noon and never recover.

Is the rule of 400 sq ft per ton accurate?

It is a starting point, not a finish line. In a new well-insulated Oklahoma home, you might need 450-500 sq ft per ton. In a 1960s frame house with no insulation, maybe 250-300 sq ft per ton. Ceiling height, window area, and sun exposure matter just as much as square footage. The rule is useful for a ballpark conversation, not for ordering equipment.

How do I know what size system I have now?

Look at the model number on your outdoor unit. Most manufacturers encode the nominal capacity in the model number. Common codes: 018=1.5 ton, 024=2 ton, 030=2.5 ton, 036=3 ton, 042=3.5 ton, 048=4 ton, 060=5 ton. The number is BTU/hr divided by 1,000. Divide by 12 to get tons. If you cannot find it, call me and I can usually identify it from the model number over the phone.

Should I oversize my system to be safe?

No. This is the single most common mistake contractors make, and most of them know better. Oversizing does not give you a buffer. It gives you a humidity problem and a shorter equipment life. Proper sizing for Oklahoma means your system should struggle slightly on the absolute hottest 1% of days. That is how Manual J works. If it always keeps up easily, it is probably too big.

Does geothermal use the same sizing rules?

Same Manual J process, but geothermal systems are sized differently because they handle both heating and cooling efficiently. The loop field is also sized to match the system. I run a complete ground loop design alongside the Manual J for every geothermal install. This is part of what IGSHPA accreditation covers.

## Loop Types: What I Install in Oklahoma

The loop field is the heart of a geothermal system. Pick the wrong loop for your property and the system will never hit the efficiency it was sold on. Oklahoma soils, water tables, and lot sizes are not the same as Minnesota or Florida, so I size loops for the ground I have actually drilled into across Kingfisher, Blaine, Canadian, Garfield, and Logan counties.

### Vertical Closed-Loop

A drilling rig sinks boreholes 150 to 300 feet deep. Two pipes per borehole carry antifreeze solution down and back up. Vertical loops are my recommendation when the lot is small, the homeowner does not want the yard torn up, or the soil layer above hard rock is shallow. Footprint is tiny: a 4-ton system needs about four boreholes spaced 15 feet apart. Cost runs higher than horizontal because of the drilling rig, but performance is consistent year-round because deep soil holds a steady 60 to 65 degrees in Central Oklahoma.

### Horizontal Closed-Loop

Pipe is buried in trenches 5 to 6 feet deep. The trench length runs 400 to 600 feet per ton of capacity. Horizontal loops are my first pick when the homeowner has acreage and does not mind a few days of trenching. The install cost is the lowest of any loop type because a trencher is far cheaper to run than a drilling rig. The trade-off is shallower soil temperature swings, so loop length has to be sized correctly. I have installed horizontal loops on acreage in Blaine County, Major County, and northern Canadian County.

### Pond or Lake Loop

If the property already has a pond at least 8 feet deep and a half acre in surface area, a pond loop is the cheapest install I can offer. Coiled pipe sits at the bottom of the pond, weighted down with concrete pads. Water is a much better heat transfer medium than soil, so loop length drops and efficiency goes up. I will not dig a pond just to use one, but if you already have one on the property, ask me about it.

### Open-Loop (Pump and Dump)

Open-loop systems pull water from a well, run it through the heat pump, and discharge it back into a second well or a pond. In Oklahoma I only recommend open-loop when there is a strong, clean, high-volume aquifer under the property and a legal discharge point. Water quality matters: high iron or hard water will scale up a heat exchanger fast. I test the water before I quote an open-loop system. Most Oklahoma homes are a better fit for closed-loop.

## Ton Sizing for Oklahoma Homes

A geothermal system in Oklahoma typically needs 1 ton of capacity per 500 to 600 square feet of well-insulated home. A 2,400 sq ft house lands at 4 to 5 tons. A 3,000 sq ft house lands at 5 to 6 tons. Those numbers are starting points, not the answer.

I do not size systems by rule of thumb. I run a Manual J load calculation before I quote any geothermal install. Manual J accounts for window orientation, attic insulation, duct losses, wall R-value, and infiltration rates. A 2,400 sq ft house in Kingfisher with R-30 attic and tight windows might only need 3.5 tons. The same square footage in a 1970s ranch with single-pane windows can easily need 5 tons. Oversizing a geothermal system is expensive both upfront (loop field is bigger than it needs to be) and on operating cost (system short-cycles and never reaches steady-state efficiency). Undersizing means the home will not stay comfortable on the hottest July days. Manual J is the only way to get it right.

You can run your own Manual J first with my
free load calculator
, then we compare notes during the free in-home estimate.

## Efficiency Numbers: Why Geothermal Wins

Geothermal heat pumps run at a Coefficient of Performance (COP) of 4.0 to 5.0
(Source:
U.S. Dept of Energy
)
. An air-source heat pump runs at COP 3.0 to 3.5. Translation: for every 1 unit of electricity you put in, geothermal returns 4 to 5 units of heat. Air-source returns 3 to 3.5. On the cooling side, geothermal hits EER 25 to 30. Conventional central air sits at EER 13 to 18.

The top of the line ClimateMaster Trilogy 45 Q-Mode series I install hits COP 5.0+ and Energy Star certified EER of 41 in some configurations. That is the highest rated geothermal heat pump on the market. In real-world Oklahoma operating conditions, I see customers cut heating bills 50 to 70 percent compared to propane or electric resistance, and cooling bills 30 to 50 percent compared to an old SEER 10 air conditioner. Those numbers come from utility bill comparisons my customers send me, not marketing brochures.

## Cost Breakdown: Real Numbers for an Oklahoma Install

A typical 4-ton geothermal install in Oklahoma runs $25,000 to $40,000 before rebates. The range reflects loop type (horizontal cheapest, vertical most expensive, pond loop cheapest of all if a pond exists), home access, ductwork condition, and equipment tier. ClimateMaster Trilogy at the top, ClimateMaster Tranquility 30 in the middle, ClimateMaster Tranquility 22 at the entry level. All three carry the same loop, so the loop investment travels with you even if you upgrade the indoor unit 15 years later.

After rebates the math gets interesting. A 4-ton install on a CKenergy meter returns $8,000 in utility rebate, dropping the net to $17,000 to $32,000. Add OG&E rebate stacking where applicable, plus financing through Synchrony, Wells Fargo, or Wisetack, and the monthly cost often lands at or below what the homeowner was already paying in propane and electric. Payback runs 7 to 12 years on $200 to $400 per month in utility savings, depending on the size of the home and what the system replaces. The loop lives 50+ years and the indoor unit lives 20 to 25 years.

## Loop Install Process: What Three to Five Days Looks Like

A conventional air conditioner swap takes me a day. A geothermal install takes 3 to 5 days, sometimes a week for larger systems or wet weather delays. Here is the actual sequence:

Day 1, drilling or trenching.
For vertical loops, the drilling rig arrives on a trailer and sets up. Each borehole takes 2 to 4 hours depending on rock layers. For horizontal loops, a trencher cuts the 5 to 6 foot trenches across the property. The trencher leaves less mess than most homeowners expect because the soil mounds along the trench and goes right back in.

Day 2, pipe insertion and header trench.
The vertical pipe loops are dropped into the boreholes with a U-bend at the bottom. The boreholes are grouted with thermally conductive bentonite from the bottom up. Once boreholes are sealed, I dig a header trench from the boreholes back to the house and run the supply and return mains.

Day 3, manifold and antifreeze.
All the individual loops tie into a manifold near the foundation. The system is filled with a propylene glycol antifreeze solution rated for Oklahoma winter lows. The whole loop field is pressure tested at 100 PSI for a minimum of 30 minutes to confirm zero leaks. I will not bury a system that does not hold pressure.

Day 4-5, indoor unit, ductwork, commissioning.
The ClimateMaster indoor unit is set, ductwork is connected or modified, refrigerant lines are brazed, and the system is electrically wired. I commission the system with my IGSHPA loop pressure tools and verify entering water temperature, leaving water temperature, and Delta-T across the heat exchanger. The system gets a final efficiency report that goes into your file in case CKenergy or OG&E ask for it during the rebate process.

After commissioning, I walk the homeowner through the ClimateMaster 360 thermostat, the loop pressure gauge in the mechanical room, and what to call me about (rare) versus what is normal (a quiet system running long, steady cycles).

## Geothermal Maintenance Plans

Geothermal systems are designed for 20+ years of service, but they do need annual attention. I offer three tiers of geothermal maintenance:

Geo Basic, $360/yr.
Annual tune-up, system inspection, loop pressure check, refrigerant pressures, and electrical safety check.

Geo Plus, $428/yr.
Everything in Basic, plus priority scheduling, no-overtime pricing, and a 15 percent parts discount on any repair that comes up.

Geo 360, $499/yr.
Everything in Plus, plus loop repressurization included if the loop needs a top-off, full diagnostic credit, and same-day priority dispatch. This is the plan I recommend for any geothermal system more than 5 years old. Loop pressure drift is the single most common reason a 10-year-old geo system underperforms, and Geo 360 makes that a non-issue.
Once your loop is in, I keep it pressured and clean with a
geothermal maintenance plan

## Where I Work

I install and service geothermal systems across all of central Oklahoma. Kingfisher County is my home base, but geothermal installs are large projects and worth the drive. I have completed installations in Blaine County, Canadian County, Garfield County (Enid), Major County (Fairview), Logan County, and beyond. If your utility has a rebate program, I make the trip.

## Why IGSHPA Accreditation and ClimateMaster GeoElite Matter

IGSHPA Accreditation
is the ground source heat pump industry’s professional certification. It covers loop sizing, system design, and installation standards. The coursework and field evaluation are specific to geothermal, not general HVAC. Most HVAC shops hold a state mechanical license and nothing else. IGSHPA Accreditation means I have been tested on the actual science of how ground loops work and how to size them correctly for Oklahoma soils.

ClimateMaster GeoElite
is the top dealer tier with ClimateMaster, the leading American geothermal manufacturer. It means direct factory support, priority parts access, and access to the best equipment warranties available. In 2016, Air Products Supply, ClimateMaster’s regional distributor, named Hartzell’s “Best Newcomer of the Year” across their entire dealer network. If you want a plain-spoken read on the day-to-day reality of owning a geo system here, see
what Oklahoma homeowners actually expect from geothermal
.

Rebate paperwork:
I have completed the CKenergy, OG&E, OEC, and Cimarron Electric rebate applications many times. I handle the paperwork so my customers never leave money on the table. A CKenergy rebate on a 5-ton system returns $10,000. That is not money you want stuck in a bureaucratic form.

Manufacturer Training and System Design.
I am not just a ClimateMaster dealer. I am factory-trained, which means I have been through ClimateMaster's technical curriculum on system design, loop field sizing, and installation standards. I also do the full system design in-house, including Manual J load calculations and loop field layout, before a single hole is drilled. Most HVAC shops outsource that or skip it. I do not. For service on an existing system, see my
geothermal repair in Oklahoma
page.

## Geothermal Questions

How far do you travel for geothermal installs in Oklahoma?

Anywhere in central Oklahoma. A geothermal system is a significant investment and deserves the right installer. I have driven to Watonga, Fairview, Enid, and beyond. The rebate money usually covers the difference. Call 405-375-4822 and tell me where you are.

How much is the CKenergy geothermal rebate in Oklahoma?

$2,000 per ton of system capacity, up to $24,000. A 3-ton system returns $6,000. A 5-ton system returns $10,000. CKenergy covers 10 counties including Blaine, Canadian, Custer, and Grady. I handle the application for you.

Do you install geothermal systems in Enid Oklahoma?

Yes. I serve Garfield County including Enid. OG&E offers a $1,000 per ton rebate for geothermal in that territory. Call me for a free site assessment and I will tell you exactly what the system will cost after the OG&E rebate.

What is the difference between IGSHPA Accreditation and a regular HVAC license?

A Master HVAC license covers the mechanical and refrigeration side of heating and cooling equipment. IGSHPA Accreditation is specific to ground source heat pump systems, covering loop field design, soil thermal conductivity, system sizing, and installation standards. Not all Master HVAC technicians have it. In Oklahoma, very few do.

How much does geothermal cost in Oklahoma?

A typical 4-ton geothermal install runs $25,000 to $40,000 before rebates. After a CKenergy rebate of $8,000, the net drops to $17,000 to $32,000. The actual quote depends on loop type, home size, and equipment tier. I do free estimates, call 405-375-4822.

What rebates are available for geothermal in Oklahoma?

CKenergy pays $2,000 per ton up to $24,000 across 10 counties. OG&E pays $1,000 per ton. OEC pays $400 to $700 per ton. Cimarron Electric pays $600 flat. KPWA and CVEC have confirmed programs. HEEHRA federal up to $8,000 is pending Oklahoma rollout. The federal Section 25D tax credit expired December 31, 2025.

How long does geothermal installation take?

Three to five days for a typical residential install. Day 1 is drilling or trenching, day 2 is pipe and headers, day 3 is manifold and antifreeze pressure test, days 4 to 5 are the indoor unit, ductwork, and commissioning. Bad weather or larger systems can stretch it to a week.

Will geothermal work on my Oklahoma property?

Almost certainly. Vertical loops fit small lots. Horizontal loops fit acreage. Pond loops fit properties with an existing pond at least 8 feet deep. Open-loop fits the rare case of a strong, clean aquifer. I do a site walk during the free estimate and tell you which loop is right for your soil and lot.

How long do geothermal systems last?

The loop field is rated for 50-plus years. The indoor heat pump unit runs 20 to 25 years with regular maintenance. When the indoor unit eventually wears out, the loop stays in the ground and the next unit ties right into it. The biggest investment you make is the loop, and you only make it once.

Is the Section 25D federal tax credit still available for geothermal in 2026?

No. Section 25D expired December 31, 2025. It is no longer available for new installations. The good news is that Oklahoma utility rebates, including CKenergy at up to $24,000, are still fully active for 2026 installs. That is the money to focus on.

## Frequently Asked Questions

Geothermal or air-source heat pump: which one wins in Central Oklahoma?
Geothermal wins on long-term operating cost (40 to 60 percent lower bills), 25-year equipment life, and total comfort. An air-source heat pump wins on upfront cost (one third the price) and a faster 3 to 6 year payback. If you are staying in the house 12-plus years AND your CKenergy or OG&E utility pays the rebate, geothermal. If either is no, modern variable-speed heat pump.

What is the real cost difference between geothermal and a heat pump in Oklahoma?
A 3-ton geothermal install in Kingfisher County runs $24,000 to $45,000 depending on loop type. A comparable 3-ton variable-speed air-source heat pump runs $9,000 to $16,000. The price gap shrinks 30 to 50 percent for CKenergy and OG&E customers once 2026 utility rebates land.

How much does each system actually cost to run each month in Oklahoma?
A 3-ton geothermal in a typical 2,000 sq ft Kingfisher home pulls $480 to $720 a year in heating-and-cooling electricity at 12 cents per kWh. An air-source heat pump in the same home pulls $1,100 to $1,500. That is roughly $40 to $80 a month in real savings, every month, for the next 25 years.

Do air-source heat pumps work in Oklahoma winters?
Modern variable-speed cold-climate heat pumps (Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat, Trane TruComfort) hold 100 percent capacity to 5 degrees and 75 percent to minus 13 degrees. They handle Oklahoma winters fine. The cooling-side gap in 105-degree July still favors geothermal by 25 to 35 percent because no air-source unit beats a 70-degree ground loop in the hottest week of the year.

What is the payback period on geothermal vs a heat pump in Central Oklahoma?
Geothermal payback in Central Oklahoma runs 8 to 14 years on a typical 3-ton home after utility rebates. Heat pump payback runs 3 to 6 years. If you plan to stay 12-plus years and your utility pays a rebate, geothermal wins long-run. Otherwise, the heat pump wins on time-value-of-money.

Financing available.
Geothermal systems are a significant investment and the right time to do it is when the rebate window is open. I offer financing through Synchrony, Wells Fargo, and Wisetack. Many of my customers finance the out-of-pocket portion after the utility rebate and pay less per month than they were spending on gas and electric.
