Trane Thermostats: Which One Goes With Your System
The thermostat is the part of your system you touch every day, and the wrong one can hold back a good system. I’m a Trane Comfort Specialist (TCS SELECT) dealer, and I match the thermostat to the equipment, not the other way around. Here is the current Trane lineup, what each one does, and which systems it works with.

Priority Smart Thermostat
This is Trane’s newest smart thermostat, and it takes the place of the XL824 on new installs. Trane keeps supporting the XL824, so if you already have one, it isn’t going anywhere. The Priority is the one I’ll put on most standard systems now.
- Glass touchscreen that shows heating or cooling by color, so you can read it from across the room
- Dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4 and 5 GHz), controlled from the Trane Home app, Google Home or Alexa
- Scheduling, geofencing (it knows when your phone leaves home) and occupancy sensing
- Controls heating, cooling, ventilation and humidification
- Works with up to six wireless Remote Temperature and Humidity Sensors for the room that always runs hot or cold
- ENERGY STAR certified
- Trane Diagnostics built in (more on that below)
Pairs with: RunTru, XR14, XR15 and other standard single or two-stage systems, including other brands. On a multi-speed system I confirm the staging at the estimate.
Remote Temperature and Humidity Sensor
Your thermostat only feels the hallway it hangs in. A remote sensor in the bedroom over the garage, or the back room that never cools, lets the Priority respond to that room too. No wires, stand it on a shelf or mount it on the wall, up to six per thermostat.
Trane Link UX360
A variable-speed Trane system talks to its thermostat in a way an ordinary thermostat can’t. The UX360 is the control built for that conversation. If you’re buying a TruComfort variable-speed system, this is the thermostat that comes with it.
- 7 inch color touchscreen
- Wi-Fi or wired Ethernet connection
- Trane Home app, Alexa and Google Home
- Built-in Z-Wave bridge for compatible smart home devices
- Up to 4 schedules a day, 7 days a week
- Zoning when paired with a Trane zone controller
- 10-year registered limited warranty on functional parts
Pairs with: Trane TruComfort variable-speed systems like the XV18 and XV20. It will not run other brands or standard single, two or multi-stage equipment.
Trane Link Zone Thermostat
On a zoned Trane Link system, each zone gets its own control so upstairs and downstairs stop fighting over one setting. Each zone thermostat has its own heat, cool, auto and off modes, fan settings, schedules and Home, Away and Sleep presets.
Pairs with: zoned Trane Link communicating, variable-speed systems. I design the zones and the duct dampers at the estimate.
XR724
The plain-spoken option. You get Wi-Fi control and the app without paying for the bigger screen.
- 4.3 inch black and white touchscreen
- Up to four heating and cooling schedules a day
- Built-in humidity sensor with a dehumidify setting
- Filter, maintenance and humidifier reminders
- Screen lock and guest lock
- Trane Home app, Trane Diagnostics, Alexa and Google Home
- 5-year registered limited warranty on functional parts
Pairs with: traditional single-stage, two-stage and multi-speed systems of any brand. Not variable-speed or zoned systems.
Already have an XL824, XL850 or XL1050?
Trane still supports them. The XL850 and XL1050 are ComfortLink II communicating controls (the XL1050 runs zoning), and the XL824 is being replaced by the Priority for new installs. If yours works, keep it. If you want help with it, my XL824 how-to guide and XL724 guide walk through the screens.
Trane Diagnostics: why a Trane thermostat beats a box-store one
A Trane smart thermostat can share how your system is running with your dealer, if you say yes in the Trane Home app. You opt in once. Your dealer can then see run times and performance trends, spot a small problem before it turns into a no-heat night, and with your permission sometimes fix a setting remotely. If a visit is needed, the tech shows up already knowing what’s wrong. It only shares HVAC data, nothing else in your home. See what the Trane Home app shows you.
Installing one
I install thermostats two ways: as part of a new system, or as an add-on to the system you already have. Either way I check the wiring, confirm the staging matches your equipment, connect it to your Wi-Fi, set up your schedule, enroll it in Trane Home with you, and send you the link to register the warranty. I give you the price before I start. Financing covers add-ons like thermostats, not just new systems.
Want it done with the rest of the job? Every system I install follows my 12-point installation standard.
Thermostat questions
Which Trane thermostat do I need?
It depends on your equipment. A Trane TruComfort variable-speed system needs the Trane Link UX360. Most standard systems, any brand, take the Priority or the XR724. I check your equipment and wiring before I recommend one.
Will a Trane thermostat work with my non-Trane system?
The Priority and the XR724 work with most standard systems of any brand. The UX360 and Link Zone thermostats only work with Trane communicating systems.
What replaced the Trane XL824?
The Priority Smart Thermostat replaces the XL824 for new installs. Trane still supports XL824s already on the wall.
Can I control my Trane thermostat from my phone in Kingfisher, Oklahoma?
Yes. The Priority, UX360 and XR724 all connect to the free Trane Home app, and to Alexa and Google Home. I set it up and enroll it with you before I leave.
What is Trane Diagnostics?
An opt-in feature in Trane Home that lets your dealer see how your system is running, catch problems early and sometimes fix them remotely with your permission. It only shares HVAC data.
How much does it cost to install a Trane thermostat in Oklahoma?
It depends on the model and your wiring. Call 405-375-4822 and I’ll quote the thermostat and the install before any work starts. On a new system, the thermostat is part of the free estimate.
