This Isn’t Just Another HVAC Job

I’m Dave Hartzell. I started in this trade at 18, got my first city license in Woodward, Oklahoma, and I’ve been at it for 45 years. I’ve worked under someone else, and I’ve run my own shop for 15+ years. I know the difference between a place where you’re just a number and a place where your skills actually matter.

What I’m building at Hartzell’s is a small, skilled crew, not a roster of interchangeable bodies. When you run a truck for me, it’s your truck, your route, your customers. You’re not punching a clock and waiting for dispatch to tell you what to think. You diagnose, you quote, you close, you move on. That’s how the best techs work, and that’s the only kind of tech I hire.

I’m 45 minutes northwest of Oklahoma City, one of the fastest-growing metros in the United States. Close enough to everything OKC has to offer. Far enough to breathe. Kingfisher County is the kind of place where you can afford land, keep your hunting dogs in the backyard, and still be at a supply house inside of an hour. I’ve been here my whole career and I wouldn’t trade it.

If you’re the right kind of tech and you’ve been thinking about a change, this might be the move.

4.8 stars / 276 reviews. Small crew. Every star earned on a real service call. Your accountability and workmanship directly affect your pay.

What This Job Actually Looks Like

This is a residential service tech role with a sales component, and that distinction matters. I’m not looking for fix-it guys. When a system is 15 years old and dying, you’re walking the homeowner through replacement options. You quote, you explain, and you close. That skill is worth real money on my crew.

  • Run your own truck: your route, your customers, your schedule within the day’s dispatch
  • Mix of repairs, tune-ups, installs, and diagnostics, no two days the same
  • Work on Trane TCS SELECT systems, premium brand, premium customers
  • Mitsubishi Diamond Dealer, ductless mini-splits, zoning, specialty installs
  • IGSHPA-accredited geothermal work, ClimateMaster, WaterFurnace, loop systems
  • Dispatch from home, truck comes to you, start your day from your driveway
  • Dispatched from Kingfisher, OK, 45 min NW of Oklahoma City
  • 4-day work week, three-day weekend every week when the schedule allows
  • Flat structure, you talk to Dave directly, not a call center

How Pay Works

I tie pay here to three things: your accountability, your workmanship, and how customers rate you after you leave. A tech who diagnoses accurately, closes work, and treats the customer right earns significantly more than someone who just punches a clock. I don’t cap it.

Base pay is competitive for Central Oklahoma. On top of that you earn a percentage of the invoice value of work you complete and close. Performance is measured and rewarded every pay period.

ESOP: Hartzell’s is employee-owned. The crew has a real stake in the business, not a poster on a breakroom wall.

What I’m Looking For

I’m not posting a job for an entry-level tech. I need someone who can walk into a mechanical room, read the system, and have a conversation with a homeowner about what’s wrong and what it costs to fix it, without calling me every five minutes.

  • 5+ years residential HVAC experience, this is a requirement, not a suggestion
  • EPA 608 Certified (required)
  • Strong diagnostic skills, you should be able to tell me what a system needs without guessing
  • Sales-oriented mindset, my techs quote options, they don’t just hand homeowners a repair bill and leave
  • Proof of experience, references, certifications, work history required
  • NATE certification is a plus
  • Geothermal experience is a major plus, I do more geo work than almost any shop in central Oklahoma
  • Must be willing to relocate to central Oklahoma, this is an in-person role

What I Offer

Compensation

Competitive pay based on experience, $60,000 to $95,000+ depending on what you bring. I pay on performance, not on time-served. Percentage of invoice value on top of base.

Your Truck

Company truck plus gas card. Stocked and ready. This isn’t a “drive your own car” situation.

ESOP + Benefits

Employee Stock Ownership Plan. Health insurance. I take care of my crew.

4-Day Work Week

Four days on, three days off when the schedule allows. Real life outside of work, not just a slogan.

Relocation Help

Relocation assistance discussed during interview. What I offer depends on your experience and what you bring to the table. Right person, right deal.

Premium Brands

Trane, Mitsubishi, ClimateMaster geothermal. The kind of work that builds a real resume. Not budget box-swaps.

Flat Hierarchy

Tight-knit crew. No layers of middle management. You talk to Dave. 15+ years in business, 45-year reputation in Kingfisher County, no cold leads, warm community.

Why Oklahoma?

I know what you’re thinking. Oklahoma? But hear me out. This state is genuinely one of the best-kept secrets for career HVAC techs who want to build a real life outside of work.

OKC Is Booming

Oklahoma City is one of the fastest-growing metros in the United States. New construction, new neighborhoods, new commercial builds. HVAC demand isn’t slowing down anytime soon.

Hunting & Fishing

Kingfisher County has private hunting leases everywhere. Deer, turkey, quail. Canton Lake and Watonga are 30 to 45 minutes out. If you hunt or fish, you’re going to like it here.

Your Dollar Goes Further

Cost of living in central Oklahoma is dramatically lower than most metros. You can own a home, own land, and actually bank money, not just survive paycheck to paycheck.

No Traffic. No Rat Race.

Small-town Kingfisher with OKC access. You’re not sitting on a freeway for an hour each way. Work ends and you’re home in ten minutes.

Central US Location

Dead center of the country. Easy flights from OKC to anywhere. If you have family spread out across the US, you can get to them from here without a half-day of travel each way.

Year-Round HVAC Demand

Brutal summers (100F+), real cold winters, active storm season. Oklahoma is not a 3-month HVAC market. You’ll stay busy every single month of the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to already be in Oklahoma to apply?

No. I’m actively recruiting from outside Oklahoma. If you’re the right fit, I’ll discuss relocation assistance during the interview process. Where you’re coming from isn’t the barrier. Your skills and experience are what matter.

What does “run your own truck” mean?

You’re not micromanaged. You handle your route, your customers, your calls. I dispatch and support, but your truck is your business within my business. I want techs who take ownership, guys who treat every call like it’s their own company’s reputation on the line. If you need someone looking over your shoulder to do the job right, this isn’t the fit.

Is this a fit for a master tech or someone who wants to grow?

Both. If you’re a seasoned tech who wants to work in a place where your skills are respected and you’re not just another number, this is it. I also have a path for techs who want to add certifications (NATE, IGSHPA, Mitsubishi Diamond) and grow into senior roles. This is a 15+ year business with a 45-year reputation. There’s room to grow here.

How does pay actually work here?

Competitive base pay for Central Oklahoma plus a percentage of the invoice value of work you complete and close. The more you produce, accurately and cleanly, the more you make. I don’t cap it. On top of that, Hartzell’s is employee-owned through an ESOP, so the crew has a real stake in the business.

Is the 4-day work week real?

Yes. My standard schedule is four days on, three days off when the workload allows. Storm weeks and summer peaks will stretch you, that’s HVAC. But the baseline is a real 4-day week, not a marketing line.
