Canadian County, Oklahoma: A Little History

Canadian County was born on April 22, 1889, they called it County Four that first day. The Canadian River along its southern border had been a legal boundary drawn across land that looked exactly the same on both sides: it separated Indian Territory from the Unassigned Lands for decades. When the gun fired at noon on April 22, 50,000 people crossed it in minutes and El Reno appeared on the south bank of the North Canadian River that afternoon. The county had no name, no courthouse, and no roads. Just people and stakes in the ground.

Fort Reno was already there when they arrived. The Army built it in 1875 to manage tension along the Cheyenne and Arapaho reservation boundary. It became a cavalry post, then in World War II it held German and Italian POWs. The Army still uses part of the site today. Those original stone buildings are still standing, just west of El Reno on Route 66, I drive past them on service calls. They don’t look like 150 years of history, but they are.

The fried onion burger came out of El Reno during the Great Depression. Meat was expensive. A cook at the Hamburger Inn, accounts credit Homer or Ross Davis, depending on who you ask, started smashing half a pound of shredded onion into a five-cent beef patty to make it stretch. He called it a Depression burger. Robert’s Grill has been serving them since 1926, the same year Route 66 was commissioned. Route 66 and US Highway 81 still intersect in downtown El Reno: two of the most historically significant roads in America crossing at one stoplight in a small Oklahoma town.

Yukon is where Garth Brooks grew up. The water tower on Main Street says “Yukon’s Son.” The main street through town is Garth Brooks Boulevard. It’s also the Czech Capital of Oklahoma, Czech settlers came to Canadian County in the late 1800s and the annual Czech Festival on Main Street in October draws one of the largest parades in the state. The Chisholm Trail ran through Yukon. Route 66 ran through Yukon. Two American corridors through one town that also produced one of the best-selling music artists of all time.

Today Canadian County is one of the fastest-growing counties in Oklahoma. Mustang was formally platted by a former Oklahoma City mayor. Piedmont was founded by a doctor. I service the full range: old farmhouses near El Reno, 1970s ranch homes in Yukon, and new construction in Mustang. Call 405-375-4822 for any of it.

About Canadian County, Oklahoma

Canadian County is one of the fastest-growing counties in the state, stretching from the I-40 suburbs of Yukon and Mustang west through El Reno and Piedmont into the open farm country along the Kingfisher county line. That growth means a wide range of housing stock: 1980s suburban builds in Yukon that were never sized right, newer 2,500+ sq ft homes in Mustang that still get hot upstairs in July, and acreage properties west of El Reno with enough land for a geothermal loop field. CKenergy serves much of rural Canadian County with a $2,000/ton geothermal rebate, up to $24,000 per member, making this one of the strongest geo-incentive territories in the country. OG&E covers the eastern/suburban portion at $1,000/ton. I’ve been driving Canadian County roads for 15+ years, call 405-375-4822 and I can tell you which rebate applies to your address.
