Commercial & Industrial Cooling Tower Services — Central Oklahoma | 405-375-4822
Cooling towers are the heat rejection side of a large commercial or industrial chilled water system. When a building is too large for conventional split systems or rooftop units, you build a chiller plant — and a chiller plant needs somewhere to dump the heat it pulls from the building. That’s the cooling tower’s job. Most HVAC contractors in Oklahoma have never touched one. Hartzell’s has installed, commissioned, and maintained them at a classified national infrastructure facility for one of the largest telecom companies in the country.
What We Do
Installation & Startup
New cooling tower installation, rigging and placement, chilled water piping, startup and commissioning. We coordinate the full system — tower, chiller, pump skid, and controls.
Preventive Maintenance
Annual and seasonal PMA contracts covering tower inspection, fill media, basin cleaning, fan and motor service, belt and drive checks, water treatment coordination, and full documentation.
Repair & Emergency
Fan motor replacement, gearbox service, basin repairs, distribution deck and nozzle work, structural repairs. When your cooling tower goes down in July, the chiller goes with it. We respond fast.
Chilled Water Systems
Full chiller plant service — centrifugal and reciprocating chillers, pump skids, pipe insulation, header systems, expansion tanks, and chilled water loop balancing. We handle the complete system, not just the tower.
The Sprint Project — Where This Experience Comes From
The photos on this page are from a classified national infrastructure facility — Sprint’s largest project in company history. The chiller plant we installed and commissioned served a facility housing the original transatlantic cable data center. The cooling load was continuous, the uptime requirement was absolute, and there was no margin for a system failure. The cooling tower and chilled water plant had to work from the day they were commissioned, and they did.
Who Needs Cooling Tower Services in Oklahoma
Cooling towers show up anywhere the cooling load is too large for conventional equipment — or where the facility can’t tolerate the heat rejection that a standard air-cooled system would dump into the occupied space. Common applications in central Oklahoma include:
Mission-critical cooling that runs 24/7 with no tolerance for downtime.
Redundant chilled water plants with multiple towers for continuous operation.
Large commercial buildings where central chilled water distribution serves every floor.
Manufacturing and process facilities where cooling water supports production equipment.
Why this matters in Oklahoma: Most HVAC contractors in this state only work on residential and light commercial equipment. Cooling tower service requires a different level of mechanical knowledge, different tools, and direct experience with chiller plants. When you call Hartzell’s for a cooling tower job, you’re calling a team that has done this at the national infrastructure level — not a residential shop that’s guessing at something outside their wheelhouse.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a cooling tower and what does it do?
A cooling tower is the heat rejection component of a large commercial chilled water system. When a building is too large for conventional split systems or rooftop units, a chiller plant handles the cooling — and the cooling tower dumps that extracted heat outside. Without proper cooling tower operation, the entire chiller plant loses efficiency or shuts down.
What cooling tower services does Hartzell’s provide?
We handle cooling tower installation, commissioning, cleaning, fill media replacement, fan and motor service, basin maintenance, and full chiller plant integration. Our background includes the Sprint/T-Mobile campus project — one of the largest cooling tower installations in central Oklahoma — coordinating structural, electrical, and controls contractors simultaneously.
How often do cooling towers need maintenance?
At minimum twice per year — spring startup before cooling season and fall winterization. Towers running continuously or in high-dust environments need more frequent service. Neglected towers develop scale buildup, biological growth, and Legionella risk. Regular maintenance protects both equipment life and building occupant health.
Why can’t most HVAC contractors service cooling towers?
Cooling towers require knowledge of chiller plant design, condenser water chemistry, Legionella management protocols, and large commercial mechanical systems. Most residential and light-commercial HVAC contractors have never worked on a chiller plant. Hartzell’s has — including multi-tower installations at critical infrastructure facilities.
What types of facilities in Oklahoma need cooling tower service?
Large office buildings, hospitals, data centers, industrial plants, universities, and any facility with a central chilled water HVAC system. If your building uses a chiller plant rather than rooftop units or split systems, you have cooling towers that need regular service. Call 405-375-4822 for an assessment.
