Logan County is largely cooperative territory, and Oklahoma Electric Cooperative runs rebate programs for both geothermal and air source heat pumps for its members. Program amounts move and eligibility depends on the equipment and the efficiency tier, so it is worth checking before you buy rather than after.

What changed on new equipment
New systems now ship with R-454B or R-32 instead of R-410A. Both are mildly flammable A2L refrigerants, both cost meaningfully more per pound than R-410A did, and both need the right recovery equipment and handling. I stock and work on both, and I will tell you which one your new system uses before you buy it.
On an older R-410A or R-22 system the question is usually whether to keep repairing it. I look at age, the failure and what else is tired, then tell you what I would do if it were my house. Hard water is what kills them here
Oklahoma hard water runs about 15 to 25 grains per gallon across my service area. That sediment settles in the bottom of the tank, insulates the burner or the element from the water it is supposed to heat, and shortens the life of the whole thing. I service gas and electric tank water heaters, and geothermal desuperheater hookups.

The credentials, and what they are for
I am Dave Hartzell. I started in this trade at sixteen and a half working for my dad, which puts me at 47 years, and I have run my own shop in Kingfisher for 15+ years. I am not a franchise and I am not a call center. When I say I will look at it, I am the one looking at it.
What Logan County is right now
Logan County has become one of my most active areas, and it is changing fast. Guthrie and the Cashion corridor are growing at a pace I have not seen here before: new subdivisions, new commercial buildings, people moving north out of the city. I put systems in new construction here regularly, and I would rather be in early when the duct layout can still be done right.
Then there is Guthrie itself. Oklahoma's first state capital, and the whole downtown is a historic district. Those Victorian houses are beautiful and the HVAC work takes patience: crawl space ductwork, thick plaster walls, closets that are not a standard size, original floor registers, radiators that somebody converted decades ago. Every one is a different job. After 47 years I enjoy the puzzle.
Mini splits solve a lot of it. When a house was never built for ducts, forcing ducts into it is the expensive way to get a worse result.

Can you work on Guthrie's historic homes?
That is most of what makes Guthrie different. Plaster, no duct chases and rooms added over a century. Ductless mini splits and careful zoning usually beat forcing standard ductwork into a house that never had it.

Crescent and Cashion are the closest part of the county to my shop and they run to acreage, which makes geothermal easy. Guthrie is older housing and a historic district, which makes the work more about fitting a system into a house that never had one.

Are mini splits a good answer in a Guthrie historic home?
Often the best answer. When a house was never built for ductwork, a ductless system heats and cools the room without tearing up plaster or stealing closet space.
