Why Surge Protection Matters in Oklahoma

Oklahoma’s electrical grid sees more stress than most states — summer demand peaks, ice storm outages, and frequent thunderstorms all create voltage events that stress HVAC equipment. A compressor failure on a 5-year-old system can cost $1,200–$2,500 to repair or force an early replacement. Surge protection at $291–$383 installed is cheap insurance.

Both Intermatic units include a 3-year, $7,500 connected equipment warranty — meaning if a covered surge event damages your HVAC equipment while the device is installed, Intermatic backs the claim up to $7,500.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which device should I choose — Compressor Defender or AG3000?

The Compressor Defender is dedicated to protecting your AC compressor — the single most expensive component to replace. The AG3000 is a whole-system device that also covers mini-splits, heat pumps, furnaces, boilers, and ECM motors. If you want maximum protection across all equipment, the AG3000 is the stronger choice. If budget is a concern, the Compressor Defender covers the most costly failure point first.

Can surge protection be added to my existing system?

Yes. Both units install on your existing AC disconnect or electrical panel and take about 15–20 minutes to add during any service visit. You do not need a new system or major work — ask about it when you call to schedule a tune-up or repair.

What does the ,500 connected equipment warranty cover?

The 3-year, ,500 connected equipment warranty is provided by Intermatic. If a covered surge event damages your HVAC equipment while one of these devices is properly installed, Intermatic will back the claim up to ,500. This is in addition to your existing manufacturer’s warranty — it does not void it.

Does surge protection cover geothermal and mini-split systems?

Yes. The AG3000 is rated to protect mini-splits, geothermal heat pumps, variable-speed ECM motors, and standard HVAC systems. The Compressor Defender is optimized for standard AC compressors. For geothermal or multi-zone mini-split setups, we typically recommend the AG3000.

Why is surge protection especially important in Oklahoma?

Oklahoma sees frequent thunderstorms, ice storm outages, and summer demand peaks that stress the electrical grid. Voltage spikes and brownouts are common — and modern HVAC equipment with variable-speed motors and communicating control boards is more sensitive to them than older systems. A compressor failure alone runs ,200–,500. Surge protection at 91–83 is inexpensive insurance.
