Heat pump maintenance and replacement in Oklahoma City

Maintenance. A heat pump heats and cools, so it wears in both seasons. A standalone tune-up is $229, weekday 7am to 3pm. When the first hard front comes through the metro in November, the calls change from no cool to no heat overnight. On a gas furnace the usual causes are a dirty flame sensor, a failed ignitor, the inducer motor or the pressure switch. A cracked heat exchanger is the one I will shut down and not argue about, because combustion gas and the air you breathe are supposed to stay on opposite sides of that steel. On a heat pump it is usually defrost, the reversing valve, or backup heat strips running when they should not.

One December my tech took a no-heat call on two rooftop units on a light commercial building in 73132. One unit had its blower door panel off, which keeps the safety switch open and the burner off. The other had been left unwired, with its contactor and capacitor missing and the capacitor lying on the roof. He wired it back up, added a contactor and a transformer, replaced the fuses, and corrected the breaker so the unit ran on the right amperage. Both units were heating when he left.

The outdoor unit hummed but the compressor would not start. My tech found a failed dual run capacitor, replaced it with a 35/5 MFD, and checked cooling before he left. It is the most common single repair I make in an Oklahoma summer.

A failed 3/4 hp blower motor replaced and a double-row condenser coil washed, then a return trip with a control board picked up from the supply house.
