Roman Nose, and a town that built things that lasted
Roman Nose State Park sits just north of town, named for Chief Henry Roman Nose of the Southern Cheyenne, who refused to sign away his people’s land when others were dealing. He died in that canyon in 1917 and is buried there. Watonga also built businesses that outgrew it: Wheeler Brothers Grain started here and now runs elevators across the region. This is not a town that expects somebody else to come do the work, which is probably why we get along.
