Your utility is probably not OG&E

Inside the Edmond city limits, your power comes from the city’s own municipal electric utility. Outside them it is OG&E, and out in the county you may be on a co-op. Three different bills, three different rebate programs, on streets that look identical from the truck.

This is not trivia. Edmond takes part in the OMPA WISE heat pump rebate program, which covers geothermal, air source heat pumps and ductless. OG&E’s Oklahoma residential rebates are closed for 2026 and are expected back in 2027, and OG&E lists no geothermal rebate at all. So the same equipment, installed on two houses a mile apart, can have completely different money behind it.

• The audit comes firstWISE wants an in-home energy audit before the old equipment is removed. Pull the old system first and the rebate is gone.
• Ninety days to fileThe paperwork goes in within 90 days of the install, and a post-inspection follows.
• I will not guess an amountTell me your address and the name on your power bill. Shelby or I confirm the live program before anybody counts on a number.
• Co-op, city or investor ownedBetween 2015 and 2024 OG&E’s residential rate rose about 18 percent while some co-ops in this area barely moved. The measured history is here, straight from the federal filings.

Three eras of Edmond house, three sizing problems

Almost every bad replacement I am called to fix in Edmond started the same way: somebody read the tonnage off the old outdoor unit and ordered the same thing again. That copies the original mistake forward for another fifteen years. I run a Manual J load calculation before I quote, and in Edmond it lands in three different places depending on which part of town you are in.

• Downtown and campus ranches, 1950s and 60sSmall rooms, modest glass, and duct that was sized for a much smaller system than somebody later installed. These usually need the duct addressed before the tonnage, or the new equipment short cycles and the far bedroom still does not keep up.
• The 70s and 80s suburban beltAttic air handlers and long flex runs baking above the insulation. The load is usually fine. The delivery is the problem, and no amount of new equipment fixes a duct system bleeding cool air into a 140 degree attic.
• North and east build-outHigh ceilings, big west-facing glass and open plans. These are the houses most often undersized, because the builder’s rule of thumb ignored the glass. This is also where zoning and multi-stage equipment earn their money, when somebody actually commissions them.
• Acreage on the edgesBig lots, room for a loop field, and often a well already on the property. This is where the geothermal conversation is worth having, and where the free weekend consultation gets used most.
