What changed on new equipment
New systems now ship with R-454B or R-32 instead of R-410A. Both are mildly flammable A2L refrigerants, both cost meaningfully more per pound than R-410A did, and both need the right recovery equipment and handling. I stock and work on both, and I will tell you which one your new system uses before you buy it.
On an older R-410A or R-22 system the question is usually whether to keep repairing it. I look at age, the failure and what else is tired, then tell you what I would do if it were my house. Hard water is what kills them here
Oklahoma hard water runs about 15 to 25 grains per gallon across my service area. That sediment settles in the bottom of the tank, insulates the burner or the element from the water it is supposed to heat, and shortens the life of the whole thing. What makes Major County work different
I have been driving out to Major County for years, and a call here is not the same as a call in town.
Most homes were built between the 1950s and the 1970s, with minimal insulation, drafty windows and ductwork sized for equipment that left a long time ago. I check static pressure and duct leakage before I recommend a system, because putting a bigger unit on an undersized envelope just buys you a different problem.
Natural gas does not reach most of this county, so propane is the rule. I service and replace propane furnaces, and I install more heat pumps here every year for people who want to burn less propane. A properly sized heat pump carries the heating down into the low twenties before the backup strips ever come on. Out here I would rather stock the truck heavy and fix it in one trip than make you wait.
