Repair or Replace? Free HVAC Answer, Kingfisher OK

I am Dave Hartzell. I have run HVAC in central Oklahoma for 45 years, and the question I get more than any other is simple: do I fix this thing, or is it time to replace it? Most companies answer that question with whatever pays them more. I answer it the way I would for my own house. Use the tool below for a straight first answer, then call me at 405-375-4822 if you want me to look at it in person, free.

Here’s the short version of how I make this call on my own jobs.

How I actually decide: repair, rebuild, or replace

There is an old rule of thumb in this trade called the 5000 rule: multiply the age of your system by the cost of the repair in front of you. If that number is well under 5,000, you fix it and keep running. If it is well over 5,000, you are throwing good money after bad. Right around 5,000 is the gray zone, and that is where age, refrigerant type, and how the system was installed all start to matter.

Here is the part most companies will not tell you: repair and replace are not your only two choices. On a lot of systems there is a third path, a rebuild or refurbish. That runs about 3,500 to 5,500 dollars and buys you 8 to 10 more years, versus 15,000 to 30,000 for a full replacement. It only works when the core of the system is still good, so I have to see it before I promise anything. But when it fits, it is the honest middle path that saves you real money.

When it usually makes sense to repair

Your system is under about 12 to 15 years old, the repair is a few hundred dollars, and it has not been nickel-and-diming you with breakdown after breakdown. A healthy system with one honest repair is worth fixing. If a tech is pushing a whole new system on a unit this healthy, get a second opinion before you sign anything. I am glad to be that second set of eyes.

When it usually makes sense to replace

Your system is 15 years or older, the quote to fix it is climbing toward a few thousand, or you have paid for three or more repairs in the last couple of years. At that point the money you keep sinking into it would go further toward a system that will not leave you sweating in July or freezing in January. When the core is truly gone, a new system is the honest answer, and I will show you the numbers either way.

Common questions

How do I know if I should repair or replace my AC in Oklahoma?

Run the numbers above, or use the calculator. The quick version: multiply your system’s age by the repair cost. Under about 5,000 and the system is under 15 years old, repair it. Over 5,000, or 15-plus years with repeated breakdowns, replacement usually pays off. When the core is still good, a rebuild can extend the life 8 to 10 years for a fraction of replacement cost. How much does it cost to replace an HVAC system in Kingfisher, Oklahoma?

A full replacement typically runs 15,000 to 30,000 dollars depending on the system, the home, and whether you go conventional or geothermal. A rebuild or refurbish, when the core is still good, runs about 3,500 to 5,500 and buys 8 to 10 more years. I quote exact numbers on a free in-home estimate, and I have financing that covers repairs and installs both, some with a soft credit pull that does not affect your score.

Is it worth repairing a 15-year-old air conditioner?

Sometimes. At 15 years, a small repair can still be worth it if the system is otherwise healthy and has not been breaking down repeatedly. But if the repair is expensive or it is the third fix in two years, you are usually better off putting that money toward a replacement or a rebuild. Let me look at it before you decide, no charge.

What is a rebuild and how is it different from a replacement?

A rebuild or refurbish reuses the parts of your system that are still good and replaces what is worn out, extending the life 8 to 10 years for about 3,500 to 5,500 dollars. A replacement is a whole new system, 15,000 to 30,000. A rebuild only works when the core is sound, so I have to see it first, but when it fits it saves you a lot of money.
