Guthrie is more geothermal than you would guess
Everybody expects a Guthrie page to be about historic houses, and the next section is. My own records tell a second story. Of the 50+ jobs I have completed at Guthrie addresses since 2017, about 4 in 10 were on geothermal systems, on places with room for a loop field.
Two Guthries, then. In town it is brick, plaster, retrofitted duct and gas furnaces, and the work is mostly about access. Out in the county it is ground-source systems that need their loop flushed, their flow checked and their filters changed on schedule, which is why maintenance is such a big share of my Guthrie tickets. A geothermal system that gets its filter and its flow looked after lasts. One that gets ignored does not.

Historic homes, and equipment that has to fit them
Guthrie was the first capital of Oklahoma and it still has one of the largest historic districts in the country. That is lovely to look at and awkward to heat and cool. The houses were built before ducted air existed, so the duct was added later, usually through closets and chases somebody carved out in the 1950s.
What that means on a service call:
- There is often no good place for equipmentBasements that flood, attics with no headroom, crawlspaces you cannot stand in. Placement drives the whole design.
- Undersized and leaky ductRetro-fitted trunk lines through plaster walls, sized for a smaller system than the one running on them now.
- Ductless is often the honest answerFor an addition, a converted attic or a room that has never been comfortable, a mini-split beats tearing up a hundred year old house. I am a Mitsubishi Diamond Dealer.
- Exterior changes can be restrictedIf your property sits in the historic district, where a condenser goes and how it is screened may be governed. Tell me at the estimate and I design around it rather than finding out on install day.
Out in rural Logan County the picture flips: land, room for a loop field, and geothermal worth costing properly. Most of the county is OG&E or Central Rural Electric Cooperative depending on where you sit, and those have different programs.
What I get called for in Guthrie
A mix you do not see in a newer town: century-old houses, mid-century ranches, and commercial buildings on Division and along the highway.
- Furnaces that will not lightIgnitor or flame sensor, most of the time. A dirty sensor makes a furnace light, run a few seconds and drop out, again and again.
- Cracked heat exchangersThe one I will not bargain on. Combustion air and house air are supposed to stay separated. If that steel is cracked the system gets shut down and we talk about next steps.
- Retro-fit duct that cannot breatheOld houses with modern equipment strapped to 1950s duct. Static pressure tells the story quickly, and no new condenser fixes it.
- Rooftop units on commercial buildingsRestaurants, shops and offices. Commercial diagnostic is $389 flat, day or night, up to fifteen tons and bookable online. Bigger than that, my tech sizes it on site.
- Window and wall units doing a whole houseCommon in the older rentals. Usually the moment to cost out a proper system or ductless.

Gas, carbon monoxide and the first freeze
Guthrie has more old gas furnaces, floor furnaces and wall heaters than most towns I work, so this matters more here than it does in a new subdivision.
- You smell gasLeave the house now. Do not touch the thermostat, light switches, breakers or your phone inside. Call 911 or the gas utility from outside, then call me.
- A carbon monoxide alarm goes offGet everyone into fresh air and call 911 from outside, especially if anybody has a headache, nausea or dizziness. Do not stop to shut the furnace down first.
- Safe for you to checkThermostat mode and setpoint, the filter, a tripped breaker (once), closed registers, and any fault code. Write down what you see and hear.
- Leave this to meOpening a furnace or an energized panel, relighting a burner, touching a capacitor, adding refrigerant, or opening a geothermal loop. That is licensed work for a reason.
Who covers what on a Guthrie job
On a repair, my labor guarantee is six months on the part I replaced and on my work on it. If that part or my work fails inside six months, I come back and fix it at no charge. A different part failing, or a leak in a different spot, is a new problem and a regular service call. Parts carry their manufacturer’s warranty, and I buy parts with a 1-year warranty whenever one is available.
On a new system, my install labor warranty is two years on Trane systems rated 17 SEER and up and on geothermal, and one year on everything else. The longer manufacturer parts warranty is yours to register: Trane gives you 60 days from install and Mitsubishi 90. My post-install email sends you the link. It takes a few minutes, but it has to be you who fills it in.
The first capital, and what it left behind
Guthrie went from empty prairie to a city of ten thousand people in a single afternoon in April 1889, and it was the territorial and then the state capital until the seat moved to Oklahoma City in 1910. The town stopped growing right about then, which is the reason so much of it is still standing in original form. That is why the historic district is as big as it is.
From my side of it, a town that stopped building in 1910 is a town full of buildings that never had a mechanical plan. Every system in them was added later by somebody working around brick and plaster. When I quote work on one of these places I am quoting the access as much as the equipment, and I would rather say that plainly at the estimate than discover it with the floor open.
Logan County is one of the seven counties I run every day, so Guthrie is routine work rather than a special trip. Whoever bills you out here, OG&E or Central Rural Electric Cooperative, the rate history is measured here from the federal filings rather than guessed at.
No heat in Guthrie, and what it usually is
Logan County gets the first hard freeze before the metro does, and my phone starts before sunrise when it does. Plenty of no-heat calls end with a part off the truck and less than an hour of labor. Others are worth a real conversation, and I will tell you which one you have before I start spending your money.
- Ignitor or flame sensorThe most common no-heat call there is. A dirty flame sensor makes a furnace light, run a few seconds and drop out, over and over, which people often mistake for a dying furnace.
- Blower motor or capacitorNo air at all, or air that never warms up. Frequently a same-visit fix.
- Cracked heat exchangerCombustion air and the air you breathe are meant to stay on opposite sides of that steel. If it is cracked I shut the system down and we talk about what comes next. I will not patch around that one.
- Old floor and wall furnacesGuthrie still has plenty of them in the historic housing. Parts get scarce, and at some point the honest answer is a different kind of system rather than another repair.
- Heat pumps running backup stripsAuxiliary electric heat energised in mild weather will heat the house and wreck the bill. Usually a defrost board, a sensor, or a thermostat somebody swapped without configuring it for a heat pump.
Heating work is the same $210 flat in normal hours and $309 after hours, with the repair quoted in writing before it starts, and a six month labor guarantee on the part I replace.
Straight answers
Can you put central air into a historic Guthrie house?
Usually yes, but it depends on where the equipment and the duct can go, not on the equipment itself. Some houses take a conventional system fine. Others are far better served by ductless, because running new trunk lines through plaster and brick costs more than the system does. I will tell you which one you have at the estimate.
Does the Guthrie historic district limit what I can install?
It can limit what is visible from the street, which mostly means where a condenser sits and how it is screened. It does not limit what you do inside. Tell me at the estimate if your property is in the district and I will plan around it.
How much does a furnace or AC service call cost in Guthrie, Oklahoma?
