The Story
It started with trash duty.
I grew up watching my father work with his hands. By age ten I was picking up trash at Lee Hartzell Electric in Woodward, Oklahoma, not because I had to, but because that is where my family worked and that is what you did. By thirteen I was an apprentice electrician. Junior and senior year of high school I was on a work-release program, out at noon, leading a four-man crew of adults who were older than me in every way except experience.
Those men drove. I ran the work. A lot of them went on to build solid careers of their own. I still think about them.
From Woodward to Watonga, and everything that came with it.
After Autry Technology Center in Enid, one of Oklahoma’s finest vo-tech schools, I discovered HVAC was not just a trade. It was the thing I was built for. I went on to Oklahoma State University, where I met two men who would become lifelong friends: Sammy Tomlinson and John Thomas. All three of us went on to build HVAC companies rooted in the same values. John Thomas founded Thomas Heat, Air & Refrigeration down in Roff. Sammy built Sammy’s Heat, Air & Sheet Metal in Watonga, where he had been serving the community since 1973.
I spent twelve years at Sammy’s. Twelve years learning from Sammy and his parents, not just about systems and equipment, but about the people of this region. How they think. What they care about. What it means to shake someone’s hand and actually mean it. I sold Carrier systems to Kingfisher-area families for over a decade. Some of those families are now on their third system. Their children are calling me for the first time.
He also fought fires for five years.
During my years in Watonga, I served as a volunteer firefighter. Five years of showing up when things went wrong for other people, not for a paycheck, but because that is who I am. That did not change when I came home to Kingfisher.
Then Sprint called.
I spent seven years as the onsite engineer for Sprint, managing what would become the largest project in the company’s history, a classified national infrastructure build that required the kind of precision most contractors never face. The project involved a $20 million infrastructure upgrade with an additional $10 million component. I delivered it under budget, ahead of schedule, and with zero FCC outages on a live network.
Every piece of equipment on that project was commissioned before I left the site. Every system had an operating manual, a maintenance manual, and an identifier tag. Every door. Every fixture. Sprint asked me to name my price. I gave them a job done right instead.
“The man who helped build the infrastructure that could locate your cell phone to within one foot is the same man who will size your home’s HVAC system to within one ton, and stand behind it.”
Hartzell’s was the next step. Not a detour, the destination.
When I founded Hartzell’s Heat & Air, I named it after the place where I first learned what work was, Lee Hartzell Electric, Woodward, Oklahoma. I brought with me everything Sammy taught me, everything my father taught me, and a standard of documentation and accountability most HVAC companies in this state have never been asked to meet. My daughter Shelby runs operations today. When I make a commitment to a customer, Shelby is the one who makes sure it happens.
Why My Work Is Different
A lot of HVAC companies pay their technicians by the hour. I do not. My technicians are compensated based on the quality and completeness of the work they complete, which means the person in your home has a direct personal stake in getting it right. There are no incentives here to run up hours, oversell equipment, or recommend repairs that are not needed. The incentive is to solve the problem correctly the first time and leave a customer who is glad they called.
That is how my people are rewarded, and it is how this company has maintained a 4.8-star rating across 276 Google reviews.
My technicians are paid to solve problems, not to spend time.
That difference shows up in your home every single time.
I back every job with a 6-month labor guarantee. I use Trane Connected Diagnostics for remote monitoring on qualified systems. And I size every system using Manual J load calculations, not guesswork, not what fits in the truck.

Community
This company exists because of Kingfisher and the surrounding communities. I sponsor Kingfisher Yellowjacket soccer. I support the schools, computers, yearbooks, vo-tech programs. I show up to the Masonic Lodge pancake breakfast every year to support the school band. I mentor vo-tech students by bringing them onto real job sites because someone did that for me once and it changed everything.
I serve Kingfisher, Watonga, Hennessey, Enid, the Oklahoma City metro, and communities throughout central Oklahoma. For geothermal work, I travel statewide. If you used to call Sammy’s Heat, Air & Sheet Metal in Watonga, welcome. A lot of your neighbors made the same call. I am glad you found us.
