What Changed in 2026

The Federal AIM Act phased down high-GWP refrigerants. R-410A is being replaced by R-454B (Trane, ClimateMaster) and R-32 (Mitsubishi, Daikin, some Carrier) on all new equipment. Both are mildly flammable A2L refrigerants. They require certified handling, dedicated recovery equipment, and different leak detection.

A2L Refrigerant Pricing (2026 Reality)

Service Price
R-454B refrigerant, first pound $385
R-454B refrigerant, each additional pound $148
R-454B recovery, EPA-compliant $445
R-454B geothermal recharge service $1,095
R-32 recovery, EPA-compliant $395
A2L handling fee, small repair $75
A2L handling fee, standard repair $150
A2L handling fee, complex repair $350
R-410A (legacy systems), first pound $245
R-410A, each additional pound $93

Why A2L Costs More

  • Refrigerant raw cost. R-454B and R-32 wholesale prices are roughly 50% higher per pound than R-410A. Manufacturers pay more, distributors pay more, you pay more. Not a markup. It is the actual chemistry market.
  • Dedicated recovery machine. A2L refrigerants cannot share recovery equipment with R-410A or R-22. Cross-contamination kills compressors. Hartzell stocks a dedicated A2L recovery unit.
  • Certified handling. EPA Section 608 plus manufacturer-specific A2L training. Spark-free leak detection. Ventilation requirements. Different brazing protocols.
  • Slower service time. Recovery and recharge of A2L takes longer than R-410A. Customers feel that on the bill as labor.

What I Will Not Do

  • I will not top off an A2L system without leak detection and repair. The Federal AIM Act prohibits intentional release. Topping off a leaker just delays the failure.
  • I will not mix refrigerants. R-454B and R-32 are not interchangeable. Wrong refrigerant in the wrong system burns out the compressor.
  • I will not retrofit an R-410A system to A2L. The system was not built for it. Replace the unit instead.

FAQ

Is R-454B safer than R-410A?

R-454B is mildly flammable (A2L classification) while R-410A is non-flammable (A1). In real-world use, A2L systems are designed with safety controls (leak detection, ventilation, smaller charge limits) that make them safe in residential and light commercial applications. The flammability risk is real but managed.

Why is recovery $445 instead of $200 like the old days?

A2L recovery requires a dedicated machine, spark-free equipment, certified technician time, and slower extraction to prevent cross-contamination. R-410A recovery on the same call would run $200 to $300. The premium is real cost, not markup.

My system is still R-410A. Do I have to switch?

No. Existing R-410A systems can keep running. R-410A is still available for repairs (at higher cost as production winds down). When the system fails and gets replaced, the new equipment will be A2L. You do not need to retrofit.

Can I buy R-454B online and have a tech install it?

No. R-454B sales are restricted to EPA Section 608 certified technicians. Bringing your own refrigerant to a service call is not legal and most shops will refuse. I will too.

What about R-32? When do I see that?

R-32 shows up on Mitsubishi, Daikin, and some Carrier equipment. Same A2L classification as R-454B, slightly different pressure characteristics, slightly cheaper per pound. Recovery $395. I stock both. The technician decides which based on the manufacturer spec, not customer choice.

Is geothermal R-454B different from air conditioning R-454B?

Same refrigerant, different system. Geothermal R-454B recharge runs $1,095 because the loop side requires additional flushing and verification. ClimateMaster Trilogy and TruClimate units run on R-454B. I am IGSHPA accredited and I service these regularly.

Will a leak detector for R-410A find R-454B?

No. R-410A electronic leak detectors do not reliably detect A2L refrigerants. Hartzell uses A2L-rated detection equipment on every service call where an A2L system is involved. This is part of the handling fee.
