Nothing burns at your house

No gas, no propane, no oil, no flame, no flue, no exhaust. The only energy going into the system at your house is electricity.

That has consequences beyond carbon. There is nothing in the geothermal unit that can produce carbon monoxide, because carbon monoxide comes from burning fuel. There is no flue to inspect and no venting to fail. If other gas appliances stay in the house, a water heater or a range, those still deserve detectors and attention. The heating system itself is out of that conversation entirely.

It gets cleaner every year without you touching it

This is the argument I find most convincing and the one nobody makes.

A furnace burns the same fuel in year twenty as it did on the day it was installed. Its footprint is locked in at the moment of purchase. A geothermal heat pump is an electric machine, so it inherits whatever the grid becomes. Every wind farm and solar field that comes online in Oklahoma makes the system in your basement a little cleaner, retroactively, with no action from you.

You are not just buying today’s efficiency. You are buying every improvement the utility makes for the next twenty years.

Is geothermal actually renewable?

Partly, and the distinction matters if you want to be accurate.

Renewable. Ground heat is continuously renewed by the sun and is not consumed by your using it.
The machine
Runs on electricity, which is as clean or as dirty as your utility makes it.
Honest summary
A renewable heat source driving a grid-powered machine. Not a zero-energy system.

Anyone telling you a geothermal heat pump is a zero-emission device is skipping the compressor and the pumps. It uses real electricity. The reason it still comes out ahead is that it delivers about $4.50 of heat for every $1 of electricity, so it needs far less of it in the first place.

The part green marketing goes quiet about

Yes, it uses refrigerant

A geothermal heat pump has refrigerant sealed inside the indoor unit. Refrigerants have a global warming impact if they are released, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest.

Here is the real picture. The charge is small and sealed inside a cabinet that lives in conditioned space rather than sitting outdoors in Oklahoma weather, which is easier on the components that leak. The industry has moved to lower global warming potential refrigerants like R-454B under the phase-down, which is exactly what that change was for. And at end of life, refrigerant gets recovered, not vented, which is both the law and the practice.

The buried loop is not part of that concern at all. It carries water with antifreeze, in inert HDPE pipe, the same material used for water mains. On vertical bores the grout seal exists specifically to protect groundwater. The pipe then sits inert in the ground for decades and outlives several generations of equipment, so you install it once.

The genuine environmental cost of geothermal is the day you install it: a rig or a trencher in your yard, spoil, disturbed ground, and a season of it looking rough. I would rather tell you that than show you a photo of a perfect lawn. See what your yard actually goes through.

How much carbon does a geothermal system actually save?

It depends entirely on what it replaced and how your utility generates power, which is why I will not hand you a single number. Replacing propane or electric resistance heat is the biggest drop by far. Replacing a modern high-efficiency system is a much smaller one.

Is geothermal better for the environment than a high-efficiency gas furnace?

At your house, clearly: nothing burns and there are no flue gases. Over the life of the system, a machine returning several units of heat per unit of electricity beats burning fuel for one, and the gap widens every year the grid gets cleaner.

Does the buried pipe hurt the ground or the water table?

The pipe is inert HDPE and the loop is a sealed circuit carrying water with antifreeze. On vertical bores the grout seal is there specifically to protect groundwater, which is why grouting is not a corner worth cutting.

Is geothermal better than solar panels?

They do different jobs. Solar changes where your electricity comes from. Geothermal changes how much you need. They stack well together, and for most Oklahoma homes cutting the load first makes the panels go further.

What happens to the loop at the end of the system’s life?

It stays in the ground and outlives the equipment by a wide margin. That is the point: you buy the loop once, and the next system connects to what is already there.

Does geothermal produce carbon monoxide?

No. Carbon monoxide comes from combustion and the geothermal unit does not burn anything. If you still have gas appliances in the house, keep your detectors for those.
