Geothermal vs Solar in Oklahoma

Geothermal and solar are not competitors, and picking a winner is the wrong exercise. Solar makes electricity. Geothermal cuts how much electricity your heating and cooling needs in the first place. One is generation, one is efficiency, and the real question is not which one beats the other, it is where your next dollar does the most good.

One makes energy, the other stops you from needing it

A solar array turns sunlight into electricity. Whatever it produces goes to the house, and what the house does not use goes somewhere else depending on how the utility handles it. It is a supply-side answer.

Geothermal never makes energy. It moves heat between the house and the ground instead of burning fuel or manufacturing heat with resistance elements, and moving heat is enormously cheaper than making it. The framing I use with customers is about $4.50 of heat for every $1 of electricity. Across a year, geothermal cuts roughly 50% of the energy your heating and cooling uses. That is a demand-side answer, and it is a different thing entirely from generating power. More on that at what geothermal does to my electric bill.

Efficiency before generation, and here is why

This is the part almost nobody says out loud, and it is the genuinely correct answer.

Shrink the load first and any array you add later can be smaller and still cover more of what is left. Generation sized against a wasteful house is generation you are paying to waste.

In most Oklahoma homes, heating and cooling is the single largest electrical load in the building. If you cut that load substantially before you size an array, every panel you eventually buy is working against a smaller target. The order matters and it only runs one direction: reducing consumption makes generation go further, but adding generation does nothing to make a house less wasteful.

You rarely hear this because the solar company sells panels and the HVAC company sells equipment, and neither one has a reason to tell you to go talk to the other first. I would rather be the guy who says it. They stack, and I am not going to knock solar

Geothermal plus solar is a legitimately strong combination, and I will say so plainly. Geothermal takes the biggest load in the house and makes it small. Solar then goes to work on the electricity that is left, including the part geothermal never touches. They are complementary by design, not rivals, and a homeowner who does both ends up in a better place than one who argues about which to do.

What geothermal does that solar cannot

  • It works at night. The ground does not care what time it is.
  • It works in an ice storm, under snow, and under a week of flat gray Oklahoma overcast.
  • It works in January, which is when a panel produces least and when your house asks for the most.
  • It does not depend on your roof. Roof age, pitch, and condition are not part of the conversation.
  • It does not depend on orientation or shade. No south-facing requirement, and the big shade tree in the front yard stays.
  • There is nothing to look at. The loop is buried and the equipment is indoors. Nothing on the roof, nothing in the yard once the grass comes back.

What solar does that geothermal cannot

This is the honest other side, and it is a real advantage. Solar offsets all of the electricity in the house, not just the heating and cooling. The range, the dryer, the water heater, the well pump, the lights, the shop, the freezer in the garage, everything on the meter. Geothermal only ever touches the conditioning load. It touches it hard, but that is the boundary of what it can do.

If your goal is to move the whole meter rather than the biggest slice of it, that is a job for generation, and geothermal is not a substitute for it.

Roof and lot realities in Oklahoma

Hail. There it is, and every homeowner in this state was already thinking it. We get storms that replace roofs, and anything mounted on a roof lives in that weather. That is not a reason to write off solar, it is a reason to ask your installer specific questions about hail and about how the array and the roof interact over time, and to know the answers before you sign.

Roof age matters too. Putting an array on a roof that is near the end of its life creates a problem you have to pay to solve twice. Geothermal moves the whole question underground: the loop goes in the ground, the equipment goes inside the house, and neither one is exposed to the sky. Different constraints, and your lot and your roof decide which set applies to you.

Why the money does not compare head to head

People want one number for each and a winner. There is not one, and any comparison chart that gives you one is hiding what it assumed.

Solar economics turn on net metering and utility policy. What your utility does with the power you produce and do not use, under the rules in force where you live, drives the result. That is a policy lever, and it is not the same everywhere in Oklahoma.

Geothermal economics turn on what fuel you are replacing. Coming off propane is a completely different case from coming off an old electric furnace, which is different again from replacing a working air-source heat pump. That is a fuel lever.

Those are not the same lever, so the two payback stories are built on different foundations and cannot be laid side by side honestly. I will also be straight about the other half of it: geothermal is a premium purchase. It costs more up front than conventional equipment and it earns that back over time. I am not going to tell you it is the cheap option.

Tax treatment is not the same for these two, so ask a professional

Tax treatment differs by technology and it changes over time, which is why I will not print a percentage here for either one. What I can tell you specifically: the residential federal geothermal credit under Section 25D is not available for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. For anything beyond that, including anything to do with solar, go to current IRS and ENERGY STAR guidance and to your own tax professional before you count on a number.
