Geothermal For A Farm Shop, Barn, Or Outbuilding In Oklahoma

I’ve spent 47 years in HVAC, started at eighteen, and I’ve run my own shop out of Kingfisher for 15 plus years. Geothermal is what I get called about most, mostly for houses. I get enough calls about farm shops and barns to lay out how I actually think about those buildings, not the sales pitch version.

A shop isn’t a house. It doesn’t get occupied the same way, and the right system for one isn’t automatically right for the other.

A Shop Doesn’t Heat Or Cool Like A House Does

A house runs around the clock, a setpoint held whether anyone’s watching or not. A farm shop usually doesn’t: four hours on a Saturday fixing a baler, weekdays 7 to 3 running a welding operation, or just a couple times a month when something breaks. That occupancy pattern is the first thing I ask about.

The building’s different too. Shop ceilings run high, sometimes 16 or 20 feet to the peak, and heat pools up there instead of where you’re working. A metal shop has more air volume to move and more surface losing heat, unless it’s insulated well, and a lot of the ones I walk into aren’t.

Then there are the doors. A 12 or 14 foot bay door isn’t a front door. Open it to pull a tractor in and you lose a huge slug of conditioned air, and whatever’s running fights to recover. No system fixes a leaky building. That comes first.

Acreage And Where The Loop Actually Goes

On a quarter acre lot in town, a geothermal loop usually means drilling straight down, there’s nowhere else to put the pipe. Out on acreage, I’ve got room to lay a loop out horizontally instead, shallower trenches spread across open ground. Room to trench gives options, it doesn’t automatically make one way cheaper, and which way we go depends on your ground. I bring in a driller I trust for vertical bores when the ground calls for it: heavy clay, rock near the surface, or not enough clear space to trench. I don’t own a drilling rig, that loop work is a team effort, coordinated so loop and mechanical get sized together.

If we go vertical, plan on roughly 200 bore feet per ton. That’s bore footage, what the driller bills for, not pipe footage: pipe runs down the hole and back up, so the pipe in the ground is roughly double, but the invoice is written in bore feet. The loop is the biggest line in the job and I price it on the estimate, after I’ve seen your ground. If the shop ties into a farm business it gets bid on its own, not off a residential rate. On acreage the well field usually sits well off the building, and that run gets priced on its own, same as the antifreeze, hauling spoils, water and permits.

When Geothermal Is The Right Call For Your Shop

If your shop gets regular use, someone’s in there most days welding, wrenching, keeping expensive tools in a space that needs to stay dry, geothermal earns its keep. You’re running the system enough hours to benefit from the steady ground temperature instead of fighting Oklahoma’s swing between a hundred degree July and an ice storm in February. It also holds up well against the abuse a working shop dishes out: no outdoor condenser exposed to dust, the mechanical parts live inside.

When A Shop Is Better Served By Something Simpler

I’ll tell you the other side too, I’d rather lose a sale than sell the wrong system. If that shop sits empty most of the week and you’re only in there a few hours here and there, a full loop and mechanical system is a lot of fixed cost chasing very little runtime. A wall mount mini-split you can flip on fast, or a propane unit heater for the cold months, does the job without paying for capacity you’re rarely using. Geothermal’s advantage is steady comfort over a lot of hours: if the hours aren’t there, neither is the advantage.

What Your Utility Might Put Toward Geothermal

Kingfisher, Okeene, and Watonga are municipal utilities, not co-ops, and that matters the day you file. Power off one of those puts you under OMPA, up to $800 per cooling ton on a qualifying install. Read that as a ceiling, not a promise: it takes a desuperheater, a new install or conversion rather than a repair, an audit before the work, and paperwork filed by a deadline. Ask before you start.

If a co-op serves you instead, Alfalfa Electric Cooperative in Garfield or Major county shows a real gap: $1,050 a ton for ground source geothermal versus $150 a ton for air source, worth a call.

The Tax Credit Question, Straight

People still ask about the federal residential geothermal tax credit, and I’ll give it straight: 25D expired at the end of 2025, gone for installs placed in service after. If this shop ties into a farm business and you’re wondering about the commercial side, that’s Section 48, not Section 48E. I’m not a tax professional and won’t quote a percentage I can’t back up. What This Costs To Find Out

I don’t quote a shop building over the phone. I come look at ceiling height, doors, insulation, acreage, and how you use the space. That estimate on a new system is free. If something’s already installed and acting up, the fee depends on the equipment and how the building classifies. Geothermal is $348 flat, any hour, and that fee doesn’t credit toward repair. Conventional equipment on the residential side is $210 flat, $99 dispatch plus $111 diagnostic. If this shop ties into a farm business, that’s light commercial: $389 flat, day or night, up to 15 tons, and above 15 tons I size it on site before quoting. Can you even put geothermal in a metal shop building or a pole barn?

Yes. The heat pump doesn’t care what the building’s made of, what matters is whether I can run ductwork through it and whether it’s insulated and sealed.

How much loop do I need for a shop that’s, say, 40 by 60 feet?

I can’t give an honest number without seeing the building. Figure about 200 bore feet per ton if we go vertical. The loop price goes on the estimate, and on a shop tied to a farm business it’s bid on its own. The estimate is free.
