The Geothermal Desuperheater: What It Does And Why It Matters For The OMPA Rebate

I get asked about the desuperheater on almost every geothermal estimate I write, usually right after somebody has read online that a geothermal system heats their water for free. It does not, not exactly, but the part doing that work, the desuperheater, is real, and in the OMPA rebate towns I serve it is a piece the rebate program is built around.

What A Desuperheater Actually Is

Inside a geothermal heat pump, refrigerant leaves the compressor as hot, high-pressure gas, hotter than the water sitting in your water heater tank. A desuperheater is a small heat exchanger plumbed into that hot discharge line, paired with a small pump that circulates water between it and your domestic water heater. That pump draws a little power whenever it runs. In cooling, that heat was headed out to the ground loop anyway, so catching it is close to a straight gain. In heating it is a trade, heat that would have gone into the house goes into your tank instead.

It is not a second water heater and it does not replace the one you already have. Think of it as a preheat stage: your electric or gas water heater still finishes the job and still has its own energy cost, the desuperheater just gives it a head start.

What It Realistically Does For Your Hot Water

The honest limitation: a desuperheater only makes heat when the compressor is running. On a mild Oklahoma week in April or October, when your system barely cycles, it is not doing much either. On a July afternoon when the compressor runs for hours cooling the house, it is working the whole time and your water heater has less catching up to do. It rides on your system’s runtime, and runtime changes with the season, the house, and your household’s hot water habits.

I am not going to put a percentage off your water heating bill on this page. I do not have a verified number for that, and anybody quoting an exact figure without knowing your tank, habits, and real run hours is guessing. What I can tell you honestly: it is a preheat that rides on your compressor’s runtime, and the more your system runs, the more it does.

The Part Most Homeowners Miss: What OMPA Actually Requires

OMPA, the Oklahoma Municipal Power Authority towns, including Kingfisher, Okeene, and Watonga, pays up to $800 per cooling ton on a qualifying new geothermal install. That is a cap, not a guarantee, and a replacement is not automatically written at the same rate as a new install. The part that trips people up: the program is built around having a desuperheater, and that is not the only condition, the equipment also has to meet the program’s efficiency minimum. I confirm the requirements and the rate with OMPA before I quote a rebate number.

That is why I do not treat the desuperheater as an option to talk you out of on price in an OMPA town. It is part of what makes the rebate math work. Leave it off to save a little up front and you can put the whole rebate at risk.

Rebates are not one-size-fits-all across Oklahoma either. Out in Garfield or Major County on Alfalfa Electric Co-op’s territory, their program pays $1,050 per ton for a ground-source system versus $150 per ton for an air-source system, a separate utility with its own numbers and rules. Whichever utility serves your address, I check what that program requires before I draw up a quote.

Diagnosing An Existing System, Or Building A New One

On a new install, the desuperheater gets designed in from the start, not bolted on afterward. Loop cost runs around $3,000 a ton and the loop field runs around 200 bore feet a ton, so a 4 ton system is roughly 800 bore feet drilled in total, not 200 feet down one hole. The driller bills by the bore foot, and I bring in one I trust.
