Dover, Oklahoma: The Town the River Built and the Bridge Destroyed

Dover sits on land that was a Chisholm Trail trading post before it was ever a town. The Red Fork Traders’ Ranch stood here, and cattle drives moving north stopped at this crossing. The trail that built the Oklahoma cattle economy passed right through what is now Dover’s main street.

On September 18, 1906, the Cimarron River bridge gave way under Rock Island Railroad passenger train No. 12. At least 100 people died. It was called one of the worst train wrecks in American history at the time. The cars went into the Cimarron River and sank. The Cimarron runs on a sand and silt bottom, and heavy objects that go in do not always come back out. Those railroad cars have never been fully recovered. They are still in the river bed below where the bridge stood. Dover carried that weight, and the town that might have grown into something significant instead became the small farm community it is today.

Dover was also home to Lincoln College in the early 20th century, one of the few institutions in the Oklahoma Territory providing higher education to Black residents before statehood and desegregation. That is the kind of history most towns do not talk about. Dover has it.
