Drummond, Oklahoma: The Railroad Picked the Name and the Location
Drummond is named for Harry Drummond, an official of the Blackwell, Enid and Southwestern Railroad. The town itself was platted by the Frisco Town Company on July 21, 1901 — not by settlers, but by the railroad and its real estate arm. In the early Oklahoma Territory, this was standard. The railroad needed towns along its route to generate freight and passengers, so it created them. The settlers who arrived after the 1893 Cherokee Outlet run had claimed land in this area, but the formal townsite came from the company.
The farming families who built Drummond were part of the German immigrant wave into Garfield County. The same communities that settled Lahoma and Waukomis extended through here. They planted wheat, built churches and schools, and created the kind of stable agricultural community that is still the character of this part of Oklahoma.
Small Garfield County farming community, older homes, propane is common in the rural stretches. I service Drummond and the surrounding area. Call 405-375-4822.
