A Note From Dave

I started picking up trash at ten years old. Not as a punishment. Because my family was in the trades and that is where the work was. My father taught me electricity. By thirteen I was doing real electrical work. By high school I was leading a four-man crew of grown men — they drove the truck, I ran the job.

I tell you that because I want you to know what kind of company this is. We are not looking for someone to fill a slot on a schedule. We are looking for someone who wants to build something — a career, a reputation, a life in this trade.

We pay differently than most shops in Oklahoma. Our technicians earn a percentage of the invoice value of the work they complete — 6 to 8 percent, depending on role and experience. That is on top of a competitive base. What that means in practice is that a technician who is good at their job and takes care of customers earns significantly more than someone who just punches a clock. It also means we only do right by each other when we do right by the customer. That is exactly how I want it.

I have held a Master HVAC license in this state. I ran a classified national infrastructure project for Sprint — their largest in company history — under budget, ahead of schedule, zero outages. I have sold Carrier systems in Kingfisher-area homes for twelve years. I have fought fires in Watonga for five. Every one of those things taught me the same lesson: the standard you hold yourself to is the only thing that follows you home.

If that is how you think, we should talk.

— Dave Hartzell, Owner, Hartzell’s Heat & Air

Experienced HVAC Service Technician

$43,600–$89,000 base + 6–8% commission

This is the role where performance pay makes the biggest difference. A strong service tech at Hartzell’s who takes care of customers and runs clean tickets can push well past the top of that base range. The commission is real and it adds up fast.

What we need: EPA 608 certification required. Oklahoma HVAC license preferred. At least 3 years field experience diagnosing and repairing residential and light commercial systems. Trane, Mitsubishi, or Carrier experience a plus. Someone who is proud of their work and not afraid to show it.

Includes: Company vehicle, fuel card, tools, uniform, smartphone, paid training, 6-month review.

Experienced HVAC Installer

$43,600–$75,000 base + performance pay

Installation at Hartzell’s is not guesswork. Every system is sized with Manual J load calculations. You will install Trane, Mitsubishi ductless, ClimateMaster geothermal, and more — equipment worth doing right. Your performance pay is tied to the quality and completeness of your installs. Clean work means more work and a bigger paycheck.

What we need: Minimum 2 years installation experience. EPA 608 preferred. Sheet metal and ductwork experience a plus. Ability to work independently and take ownership of a job from start to finish.

Includes: Company vehicle, fuel card, tools, uniform, paid training.

Apprentice Installer

$34,700–$46,700 + pathway to performance pay

Dave Hartzell started leading a work crew at thirteen. He is not going to hand you a mop and tell you to wait your turn. Apprentices at Hartzell’s do real work alongside experienced technicians from day one. As your skills and certifications build, your compensation structure grows with them — including a path to performance-based pay.

What we need: Mechanical aptitude and a real interest in the trade. Valid driver’s license. Willingness to pursue EPA 608 certification (we will help you get there). Comfortable working indoors and outdoors in Oklahoma weather — which means all of it.

Includes: Paid on-the-job training, support for certification costs, uniform, real mentorship.

Internship / Apprenticeship Program

If you are in vo-tech, coming out of Autry Technology Center, or still figuring out whether this trade is for you — we want to hear from you. Dave has mentored students on real job sites for years. If you are serious about learning, we are serious about teaching.
