How to Use Your Trane XL824 Smart Thermostat

The XL824 is the thermostat I install on most Trane systems in Central Oklahoma. It is a full-color touchscreen connected control that ties into the Nexia home platform and supports 7-day scheduling, Wi-Fi remote access, and smart comfort modes. Most people barely scratch the surface of what it can do. This guide changes that.

Initial Setup

When I install your Trane system, I set the XL824 up at the job site. But if you ever need to run through initial setup again, here is how:

  1. Power on the thermostat. The Trane logo screen appears first.
  2. Select your language and time zone (Central Time for Oklahoma).
  3. Set the current date and time.
  4. Select system type (Heat Pump, Conventional, or as labeled on your system. I will have noted this on the setup sheet I leave).
  5. The thermostat runs a quick self-test and lands on the home screen.

Connecting to Wi-Fi and the Nexia App

The XL824 uses Nexia for remote access and scheduling from your phone. Here is how to connect:

  1. On the thermostat, tap Menu, then Wi-Fi.
  2. Select your home network from the list and enter your Wi-Fi password.
  3. Wait for the Wi-Fi icon in the top corner to show connected (solid bars).
  4. Download the Nexia Home app on your phone (iOS or Android) and create a free account.
  5. In the app, tap Add Device and follow the prompts to link your thermostat. You will need the 8-digit Device ID printed on a sticker on the side of the thermostat.
  6. Once linked, you can control temperature, view history, and get alerts from anywhere.

Nexia also enables the XL824’s smart learning features and integrates with Amazon Alexa and Google Home if you use those platforms.

Programming a 7-Day Schedule

A good schedule saves you real money on your electric bill. On the XL824:

  1. Tap Menu, then Scheduling.
  2. Select a day or use Copy to apply the same schedule to multiple days.
  3. The XL824 has four default periods: Wake, Leave, Return, Sleep. Set the start time and your desired heat/cool setpoints for each.
  4. Tap Save after each period.
  5. Repeat for each day of the week.

A practical Oklahoma schedule for summer: Wake 72F, Leave 78F (while at work), Return 72F, Sleep 74F. For winter: Wake 70F, Leave 66F, Return 70F, Sleep 68F. Small setbacks like these are easy for a Trane system to recover from and cut your runtime significantly.

Comfort Modes

The XL824 has three comfort modes accessible from the home screen:

  • Home: Follows your programmed schedule. Normal day-to-day operation.
  • Away: Holds a setback temperature while you are out. Tap it when leaving for a few days and set your away setpoints. Saves energy without programming a full schedule change.
  • Sleep: Activates sleep setpoints immediately, regardless of the schedule. Useful if you go to bed early or want a quick temp change without reprogramming.

Fan Control

Tap the fan icon on the home screen to toggle between:

  • Auto: Fan runs only when the system is actively heating or cooling. Most energy-efficient.
  • On: Fan runs continuously. Improves air circulation and filtration. Good for Central Oklahoma dust season.
  • Circulate: Fan runs for a set number of minutes per hour even when not heating or cooling. A middle option that keeps air moving without the full cost of constant fan operation.

Filter Reminder

The XL824 has a built-in filter reminder that counts runtime hours. When the reminder triggers, you will see a filter alert on the home screen. To reset it after changing your filter: tap Menu, scroll to Reminders, select Filter Reminder, and tap Reset. Set the reminder to match your filter type. For 1-inch standard filters, I recommend changing every 30-60 days in Oklahoma. Thicker 4-inch media filters last 6-12 months.

When to Call

Your XL824 is mostly reliable, but call me at 405-375-4822 if:

  • The screen is blank or unresponsive (check the breaker first, then call)
  • The system runs but does not reach setpoint after 45 minutes in mild weather
  • You see a flashing “Service” or fault indicator on the display
  • Wi-Fi drops repeatedly and the system is not responding in the Nexia app
  • The thermostat shows a temperature that does not match your room thermometer by more than 3 degrees

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I reset my Trane XL824 thermostat to factory settings?

Tap Menu, scroll to About, and look for Factory Reset. This clears all programming, schedules, and Wi-Fi settings. You will need to reconnect to Wi-Fi and re-link to the Nexia app after a factory reset. Only do this if I recommend it or if you are troubleshooting a serious display issue, as it wipes your schedule.

Does the Trane XL824 work without Wi-Fi?

Yes. The XL824 controls your system locally with or without Wi-Fi. You just lose the Nexia app remote access and smart features. If your Wi-Fi goes down, the thermostat keeps following your programmed schedule. Reconnect to Wi-Fi in the Menu when your network is back up.

What is Nexia and do I have to use it?

Nexia is Trane’s connected home platform. It gives you smartphone control, scheduling, energy reports, and alerts. It is optional. The thermostat works fine without it. But I recommend setting it up because remote access lets you catch problems early, like seeing your system short-cycling when you are away from home. The basic Nexia plan is free with the XL824.

How do I put my Trane XL824 in emergency heat mode?

If you have a heat pump system, tap Menu, then System, then Mode, and select Emergency Heat. This bypasses the heat pump and runs backup electric resistance heat only. Use this only if I advise it or if your outdoor unit is clearly not working. Emergency Heat costs significantly more to run than normal heat pump operation.

Why is my Trane thermostat showing the wrong temperature?

The XL824 has an internal sensor. If it reads 2-3 degrees off, that is within normal tolerance. If it is off by more than 3-4 degrees, it may be positioned near a heat source, vent, or exterior wall. You can apply a temperature offset in Menu under Calibration. If it is wildly off or fluctuating, call me. A faulty sensor can cause the system to short-cycle or over-run.
