Furnace Flue Pipe and Venting Repair in Central Oklahoma

⭐ 4.8 Stars / 271 Reviews|45 Years HVAC Experience|NATE Certified|Kingfisher, OK

Every spring, I make flue calls that start the same way: the homeowner says the furnace worked fine all winter but now will not stay on. Nine times out of ten, I find a wasp nest or mud dauber nest packed into the vent cap. Wasps in central Oklahoma build fast. A vent termination that was clear in March can be completely blocked by May. I have been clearing flue blockages and repiping furnace venting across Kingfisher County for 45 years, and I can tell you: this is one category of HVAC repair where you do not wait and see.

A blocked or disconnected flue puts carbon monoxide inside your home. A cracked PVC joint in a mechanical closet does the same thing slowly over time. If your furnace is locking out, your CO detector is alarming, or you see yellow flames instead of blue at the burners, shut the system off and call me.

Pricing note: All service calls include a 9 dispatch fee. The 11 diagnostic fee is credited toward your repair or replacement if you accept an estimate within 14 days of the diagnostic visit.

Two Types of Furnace Venting in Oklahoma Homes

PVC plastic pipe (high-efficiency, 90%+): White plastic pipe, 2 or 3 inches, that exits through a side wall. These systems use a condensing heat exchanger that produces water vapor in the exhaust. The low exhaust temperature means the pipe terminates near ground level, which is exactly where wasps, mud daubers, and ice can cause blockages.

Type B metal vent (standard-efficiency, 80%): Double-wall round metal pipe that rises through the ceiling and exits through the roof. Birds build nests at the roof cap in spring. Ice can form inside the cap during Oklahoma ice storms. Disconnected joints inside the attic are also a common problem on older homes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the two types of furnace flue pipes and how do I know which one I have?

High-efficiency furnaces (90%+ AFUE) use white PVC plastic pipe, typically 2 or 3 inches, that exits through a side wall near ground level. Standard-efficiency furnaces (80% AFUE) use Type B round metal vent pipe that exits through the roof. If your flue is plastic PVC, you have a high-efficiency furnace. If it is shiny round metal going up through the ceiling, it is Type B metal venting.

What blocks a furnace flue and how do I know if mine is blocked?

The most common blockages in central Oklahoma are wasp nests and mud dauber nests in spring and fall, bird nests at roof caps, and ice blockages at wall terminals during ice storms. Signs of a blocked flue: the furnace lights, runs briefly, then shuts off on a safety lockout. Error codes on the furnace board. Yellow or orange flames visible at the burner. Carbon monoxide detector alarm.

Is a blocked or disconnected flue pipe dangerous?

Yes, this is a life-safety issue. Combustion gases including carbon monoxide exit through the flue pipe. If the flue is blocked, disconnected, or cracked, those gases can spill into your living space. Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless. If you suspect a flue problem, do not run the furnace. Open windows and call for service immediately.

What does it cost to clear a furnace flue blockage?

Minor blockages in 2-inch PVC pipe start at 95. Major blockages are 95 for 2-inch and 45 for 3-inch. Roof vent cap clearing is 45. These prices include a safety inspection of the flue connection and a carbon monoxide check after clearing.

My furnace is in a closet. Does it need special venting?

Furnaces in enclosed closets need adequate combustion air. If the closet is too tight, the furnace pulls combustion air from the living space, which depressurizes the home and can cause backdrafting. Adding combustion air openings to the closet runs 95-95. This is a common code compliance issue in central Oklahoma homes built in the 1970s and 1980s.

Do you charge a dispatch and diagnostic fee for flue inspection?

Yes. There is a 9 dispatch fee for all service calls. If we perform a diagnostic to identify a furnace shutdown or CO concern, the 11 diagnostic fee applies and is credited toward your repair if you accept an estimate within 14 days.
