Where the heat actually comes from
The burners heat the inside of that steel. Your house air blows across the outside of it and goes to your registers, and the combustion gases go up the flue on their own path. The two never mix, and the steel is the only thing keeping them apart. That is why a cracked heat exchanger is not a wait and see repair.
