Before Anybody Digs: Where Geothermal Loop Leaks Actually Are
If somebody has told you your geothermal loop is leaking and the next step is a backhoe, stop right there. That is not a repair decision, it is a demolition decision, and it gets made on a hunch more often than on evidence.
Here is what I say every time this comes up: everybody thinks it is the loop. I started at 18 and I am 47 years into this trade, and the buried pipe is the last thing I go looking at. The parts that hold fluid back with a gasket, an o-ring or a clamp are all inside, in the mechanical room, reachable by hand.
So the job is not to guess. It is to prove it, and there is a test that proves it before a shovel moves.
Why The Buried Pipe Is The Last Thing I Suspect
A modern closed loop is high density polyethylene, and the joints in the ground are heat fused: the pipe ends are melted and pressed into one continuous piece. No gasket, no seal, no threads, nothing holding pressure by squeezing on rubber. Buried with nothing moving against it, that pipe is the most boring part of your whole system.
What hangs on the wall in the mechanical room is the opposite. Every connection up there is a mechanical joint, something clamped or threaded against something else with an o-ring or a gasket holding the fluid back, living with heat, cold and vibration for years. Those are the parts that give up, and the parts I can reach.
The sealed, motionless part almost never fails. The clamped, vibrating part fails on a schedule. Yet the call always comes in the same way: my loop is leaking.
The Test That Settles It Before A Shovel Moves
A pressure test is not complicated. I isolate the buried loop from the equipment inside, bring the system up to pressure, and watch it. If pressure holds with the ground loop isolated, the loss is not out in your yard, it is inside, in the joints below. If it does not hold, I have a real reason to look further, and I still have not dug anything up.
That is why I will not sign off on a dig based on a verbal report. A pressure test costs a service visit. Excavation costs a loop field. Those numbers are not in the same universe.
Think about what is already in your ground. A loop field runs around $3,000 per ton of capacity to put in, and a vertical bore takes roughly 200 bore feet per ton. Once that is opened up, it is opened up. Nobody undoes it if the answer was a worn o-ring on the wall. Prove it first.
What The Test Finds, In The Order I Check It
When pressure holds on the ground side, I work the equipment side in the order I check them. Five places.
Flow Center And Pump Flanges
This is where I start. The pumps bolt to the flow center through flanges with gaskets in between, holding pressure while a motor vibrates against them every hour the system runs. When they weep, fluid runs down the underside where nobody is looking, and it does that a long time before anybody ties it to the pressure dropping.
O-Rings And Hose Kits
The flexible hoses tying the flow center to the heat pump are rubber, with swivel ends and o-rings inside them. Rubber ages, clamps relax, swivel ends go first. A hose kit is a wear part, and treating it like permanent plumbing is how a system ends up topped off every season.
Fittings And Adapters
Every transition is a suspect: poly to brass, brass to steel, threaded to barbed. Different materials move at different rates through the seasons, and every transition is a joint doing work. These are also the joints most likely to have been taken apart and put back together in a hurry.
Valves
Valve stem packing weeps, because that is what old packing does. A valve can sit wide open, doing its job perfectly, and still lose fluid around the stem. It works, so nobody suspects it.
Purge Ports
The ports used to fill, flush and purge the loop are the ones I check last and find more often than I ought to. Any time somebody charged that loop, those ports were opened, and one closed almost all the way weeps quietly for months. Notice the pattern: the system that keeps needing fluid is the one where somebody keeps opening those ports.
When it is the buried pipe, the repair is a fusion joint, not a patch. HDPE loop fusion, pressure testing, and flushing explains why that work is not casual.
The One Time It Really Is Underground
There is a case where the leak genuinely is below grade, and even then the pipe wall is not what failed. Older loops were assembled with push together fittings instead of fused joints. Pipe in the ground expands and contracts through the seasons, and that movement works on that joint until it cracks or pulls loose. The failure is still a fitting, just one nobody can reach.
The other underground cause is a person. A fence post, a trencher running a new water line, somebody setting a shed footing. That is damage, not a loop wearing out. When I ask what work has been done outside lately, I am not making small talk.
Do Not Pour Sealer Into A Geothermal Loop
Somebody will suggest a stop leak product. Do not do it. That fluid circulates through the heat exchanger, the pumps and every port, and a sealer cannot tell the hole you want plugged from the passages you need open. That trades a fixable fitting for a contaminated system.

Please do not. A sealer cannot tell your leak apart from the passages that need to stay open, and you would trade a fixable fitting for a contaminated system.
My loop was installed a long time ago, is old pipe more likely to leak?
The pipe itself, no. What matters is how it was joined. Older loops were sometimes assembled with push together fittings rather than heat fused joints, and seasonal expansion and contraction works on that joint until it lets go. Even then the fitting failed, not the pipe.
