Heat Pump Repair Oklahoma | Hartzell’s Heat & Air

Heat pumps fail differently than furnaces and AC units. They have reversing valves, defrost controls, refrigerant charge that matters even more than on a straight AC, and a compressor working year-round instead of one season. I’ve been working on heat pumps for 45 years. I know what they do when they’re sick.

Heat Pump Repair: What I Diagnose

The visit starts with a $99 dispatch and $111 diagnostic. I check refrigerant charge, reversing valve operation, defrost board timing, auxiliary heat staging, and compressor performance. You get a clear answer and an exact repair cost before I start any work.

Common Heat Pump Problems in Oklahoma

  • Stuck in cooling mode in winter — reversing valve failure or solenoid issue
  • Running constantly but not heating — low refrigerant charge or failed compressor
  • Freezing up in heating mode — defrost board failure, low refrigerant charge, or airflow restriction
  • Auxiliary heat running nonstop — outdoor unit not keeping up, bad reversing valve, or thermostat misconfigured
  • Loud grinding or squealing — failing motor bearings or compressor going out
  • E1, E4, or E9 error codes — I pull fault history and trace the root cause regardless of brand

Heat Pump Brands I Service

Trane, RunTru, Carrier, American Standard, Amana, Lennox, Rheem, Goodman, Daikin, and most other brands. Geothermal heat pumps are a specialty. See my geothermal services page for details on ClimateMaster, WaterFurnace, and Bosch geo units.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does heat pump repair cost in Oklahoma?

Diagnostic is $111, credited toward repair. Common repair costs: reversing valve $400 to $700, refrigerant recharge $150 to $350, defrost board $200 to $400, capacitor $80 to $150. Compressor failure often makes more sense to replace the system. I give you the straight answer on repair vs. replace.

My heat pump is blowing cold air in heat mode. What is wrong?

Most likely causes: reversing valve stuck in cooling position, low refrigerant charge, or a failed defrost cycle causing ice buildup on the outdoor unit. Could also be a thermostat wired or configured wrong. I’ll diagnose all of it on the first visit.

Why is my heat pump icing up in winter?

Some frost on the outdoor coil is normal in winter. The defrost cycle should clear it every 30 to 90 minutes. Heavy ice buildup that isn’t clearing means the defrost board or sensor has failed, or refrigerant is low. Don’t run it with heavy ice. Call me.

Is it worth repairing a heat pump or should I replace it?

Compressor bad and unit over 10 years old? Replace it. Minor repair like a reversing valve, capacitor, or defrost board on a unit under 12 years old? Repair usually makes sense. I don’t work on commission, so you get a straight answer.

Do you repair geothermal heat pumps in Oklahoma?

Yes. Geothermal heat pump repair is a specialty at Hartzell’s. I’m IGSHPA accredited and a ClimateMaster GeoElite dealer. I handle loop diagnostics, refrigerant circuit service, and desuperheater work that most HVAC companies won’t touch.
