HVAC Coil Cleaning & Replacement | Kingfisher, OK

Oklahoma’s cottonwood season and red-clay dust are hard on HVAC coils. A dirty evaporator or condenser coil loses efficiency, drives up your electric bill, and stresses the compressor. When a coil leaks refrigerant, the right call is often a new matched coil, not just a recharge. Hartzell’s Heat & Air handles every level of coil service from a Level 1 water rinse to full evaporator replacement. Call 405-375-4822.

Evaporator vs. Condenser Coil — What’s the Difference?

Your system has two coils. The evaporator coil sits inside the air handler—it absorbs heat from your indoor air and is where your refrigerant boils from liquid to gas. The condenser coil is in the outdoor unit—it releases that heat to the outside air as refrigerant condenses back to liquid.

Both coils get dirty. The evaporator pulls indoor air through it, so dust, pet hair, and mold accumulate on the fins. The condenser gets cottonwood, cut grass, red-clay dust, and cottonwood fluff packed into the fins from outside. Either way, fouled fins mean reduced airflow and heat transfer—your system runs longer, works harder, and uses more electricity.

Coil Cleaning — Pricing by Level

Condenser Coil (Outdoor Unit)

Level 1 — Water Rinse

$221

High-pressure water rinse from inside out. Removes cottonwood, cut grass, and loose debris. Appropriate for lightly soiled coils cleaned annually.

Level 2 — Chemical Wash

$325

Coil-safe foaming cleaner applied, allowed to dwell, then rinsed thoroughly. Required when fins are packed with red-clay dust or oily road film.

Evaporator Coil (Indoor — Air Handler)

Level 1 — Standard Evap Clean

$245

Coil-safe no-rinse cleaner applied to accessible evaporator coil. Lifts dust and light mold. For systems with easy access in utility rooms or closets.

Level 2 — Attic / Difficult

$425

Chemical clean for attic-mounted or hard-to-access evaporator coils. Extra time for access and setup, rinse with proper containment to prevent attic water intrusion.

Level 3 — Pull & Bench Clean

$895

Evaporator coil removed from cabinet, cleaned on the bench with full-immersion rinse and steam. For heavily fouled coils where in-place cleaning won’t fully restore performance.

Cleaning Packages

Indoor Coil + Drain Pan

$545

Evaporator coil Level 1 clean plus drain pan scrub and biocide treatment. Best pre-season combo for indoor air quality.

Deep Indoor Clean

$795

Evaporator coil + drain pan + blower wheel deep clean. Everything inside the air handler. Maximizes airflow and system efficiency heading into summer.

Evaporator coil + condenser coil + drain pan + blower wheel. Complete tune-up supplement for systems that haven’t been cleaned in 2+ years.

Coil Replacement — Pricing by Tonnage

When a coil is leaking refrigerant repeatedly, corroded beyond cleaning, or mismatched to the rest of your system, replacement is the right call. Prices below are for matched-system coils (OEM-compatible). OEM brand-matched coils are higher.

System Size Evaporator Coil Condenser Coil
1.5 – 2 Ton $1,495 – $1,795 $1,495
2.5 – 3 Ton $1,795 $1,795
3.5 – 4 Ton $2,095 $2,095
5 Ton $2,395 $2,395
OEM Brand Match $3,195 (OEM) $3,576 (OEM)

All replacement pricing includes installation, leak test, and refrigerant recharge. $99 dispatch + $111 diagnostic apply. Access fees: $95 for attic/crawlspace units.

Refrigerant Leak Detection & Repair

A coil that’s losing refrigerant will show up as weak cooling before it fails completely. I always do a leak search before recommending a coil replacement—sometimes it’s a repairable braze joint at the line connection, not the coil itself.

Leak Detection

Electronic Scan
$225
Electronic leak detector sweep of coil, line set, and connections.
Nitrogen Pressure Test
$295 – $350
Nitrogen pressurization confirms leak location with precision. Required for warranty claims.
UV Dye Injection
$295
UV dye added to refrigerant circuit. Leak glows under UV lamp for pinpoint location.
Comprehensive Leak Evaluation
$445
Full system: electronic scan + nitrogen test + UV check. Exhaustive when leak source is unclear.

Coil Leak Repair

Pinhole Braze Repair
$395 – $995
Single pinhole or hairline crack at accessible location. Nitrogen pressure test included to confirm seal.
Mid-Level Leak Bundle
$895 – $995
Multiple small leaks or a leak in a moderately difficult location. Includes re-test and refrigerant top-off.
Major Leak Repair Bundle
$1,295 – $1,595
Complex or multiple-site leak in an older or hard-to-access coil. Weigh this cost against coil replacement before proceeding.

Pressure Switches & Condenser Accessories

Low Pressure Switch
$395
Protects compressor from low-refrigerant damage by shutting down before pressure drops critically low.
High Pressure Switch
$425
Shuts system off on high-side pressure spikes. Important protection during Oklahoma’s 100+ deg F days.
Fan Cycling Switch
$425
Controls condenser fan speed relative to head pressure. Critical for heat pump systems in winter defrost cycles.
High + Low Combo
$695 – $899
Both switches replaced together. Recommended on systems 8+ years old when one switch fails — the other is close behind.
Condenser Fin Straightening
$195
Bent fins from hail, lawn equipment, or handling reduce airflow. Fin comb straightening restores 15–25% of blocked airflow.
Condenser Pad Replace / Level
$189 – $695
Level existing pad $189. Plastic composite replacement $695. Custom concrete $689. Unlevel units cause vibration and line stress.
Line Set Insulation
$290 – $395
Repair cracked insulation $290. Full wrap upgrade with UV-resistant Armaflex $395. Exposed suction lines lose efficiency and sweat in Oklahoma humidity.

Coil Cleaning & Replacement FAQ

How do I know if my coils are dirty?

Signs of dirty coils: the system runs longer than usual to reach temperature, electricity bills rise in summer compared to prior years, the evaporator coil is frosted or iced over, airflow from vents is weak, or the outdoor unit is visibly packed with debris. The fastest test is comparing the temperature split: supply air should be 18–22°F cooler than return air. Less than that usually means dirty coils or low refrigerant.

Can I clean my condenser coil myself?

You can rinse the condenser coil with a garden hose from inside out (not outside in—that packs debris deeper). Use the fine-mist setting, not a pressure washer. For chemical cleaning or anything involving refrigerant, call a licensed tech. Bending fins or damaging refrigerant lines during DIY cleaning creates bigger problems.

How long does an evaporator coil last in Oklahoma?

Typically 10–15 years. Formicary corrosion from volatile organic compounds (common in new construction materials and cleaning products) can cut that to 7–8 years on copper coils. Aluminum coils are more corrosion-resistant but cost more. Oklahoma’s UV exposure and heat also age outdoor condenser coils faster than in milder climates.

Is it worth repairing a coil or should I replace the whole system?

If the coil is under warranty and the rest of the system is under 10 years old, coil repair or replacement is usually worthwhile. If the system is 12+ years old and other components are aging, replacing the matched system often makes more sense—a new coil on an old compressor is like new brakes on worn rotors. I walk through the economics with every customer. Call 405-375-4822 for an honest assessment.

Do you credit the diagnostic fee toward the repair?

Yes. The $111 diagnostic is credited toward your repair or replacement if you accept an estimate within 14 days. It is not a separate add-on to the repair cost—it’s rolled in. The $99 dispatch fee is separate.

Does refrigerant come with coil replacement?

Yes. All coil replacement pricing above includes evacuation, leak test, and refrigerant recharge to factory spec. If the replacement is under manufacturer warranty, I handle the parts paperwork; you cover the labor rate.
