Okeene is deep Blaine County — a small, tight-knit farming community where people know each other and recommendations travel fast. I’ve been servicing out there for years. When I do a job in Okeene and do it right, three of the neighbors usually end up calling. That’s how it works in a town like that, and it keeps me honest. My name is Dave Hartzell — I run a one-shop operation out of Kingfisher with 45 years of HVAC experience and no national franchise behind me. What I tell you is what I actually know.
The biggest opportunity for Okeene homeowners right now is the CKenergy geothermal rebate. Okeene is firmly in CKenergy electric co-op territory, which means a qualifying geothermal install can get you $2,000 per ton back — up to $24,000. What is the Okeene Rattlesnake Hunt and how does it affect HVAC schedules?
The Okeene Rattlesnake Hunt runs the first weekend in May every year. It started in 1939 when local farmers, including Orville Von Gulker, organized to control western diamondback rattlesnakes that were coming out of the gypsum hills and killing cattle. It became a tradition. Attendance peaked at 16,000 to 18,000 people in the 1970s and it is considered the oldest rattlesnake event in the United States. If you need service the week of the Hunt, call early. The whole county is busy that weekend and I book up fast. 405-375-4822.

Okeene, Oklahoma: Where the Rattlesnake Hunt Started as Pest Control
In 1939, a farmer named Orville Von Gulker and some neighbors decided to do something about the western diamondback rattlesnakes coming out of the gypsum hills and killing cattle. They organized a hunt. It worked well enough that they did it again the next year, and the year after that, and the year after that. Over eighty years later, the Okeene Rattlesnake Hunt still runs every first weekend in May and has drawn crowds of 16,000 to 18,000 people in its peak years.
The snakes are real. The red gypsum and limestone hills west of Okeene are prime habitat for western diamondbacks. When they came out in the spring and ranchers started losing livestock, the community decided to hunt them back. That practical response to a real agricultural problem became one of the most unusual and enduring community traditions in Oklahoma. It is the oldest rattlesnake event in the United States.
Okeene is farm and ranch country in Blaine County, and the homes I service out here reflect that. Older farmhouses, some stone construction from the gypsum-era quarrying, heat systems that were built for function not efficiency. I cover this area from Kingfisher. Call 405-375-4822.
