Got told your HVAC system is “done” and needs $15,000 to $30,000 in full replacement? Maybe. Maybe not. I rebuild conventional HVAC systems for $3,500 to $5,500 with 1 to 2 year parts and labor warranty. Geothermal rebuilds start at $3,500 with up to a 5 year warranty when the loop verifies good. A solid rebuild extends system life 8 to 10 more years. I’m Dave Hartzell, Master HVAC, 45 years in the trade.

When a Rebuild Makes Sense

  • Outdoor unit compressor failed but the indoor coil and blower are healthy
  • Refrigerant leak is in a repairable component, not the evaporator coil itself
  • Geothermal ground loop tests good but the heat pump unit has aged out
  • Compressor is still under OEM warranty, only labor and ancillaries need to be paid
  • System is under 15 years old with one failed major component
  • Ductwork and electrical sizing are correct and don’t need re-engineering

When Full Replacement Is the Right Call

  • System is 20+ years old AND has multiple component failures stacked up
  • Refrigerant type is discontinued (R-22 phase-out) AND the coil is leaking
  • Original sizing was wrong, Manual J recheck shows the wrong tonnage was installed
  • Owner is planning to sell the house within 5 years and wants a new-system selling point
  • Repeated repairs in the last 24 months have already exceeded 50 percent of replacement cost

Why I Can Rebuild When Others Won’t

Most contractors don’t rebuild because the install commission is bigger on a $25,000 replacement than on a $4,500 rebuild. That’s it. The skill set is the same, but the incentive points away from saving you money.

I rebuild because I’ve been doing this for 45 years and I’d rather have a customer for life than a one-time install ticket. My credentials cover both sides: Master HVAC License, NATE Certified, IGSHPA Accredited (geothermal), Mitsubishi Diamond Dealer, Trane TCS SELECT, ClimateMaster GeoElite, Amana Brand Advantage Dealer, BBB A+ for 11 years. Parts sourcing through manufacturer relationships built over decades means I can usually get OEM components other shops have to back-order or substitute.

How a Rebuild Actually Goes

  1. Free Second Opinion visit if you’ve got an outside replacement quote, or a $111 diagnostic if you don’t.
  2. Honest assessment. If rebuild is the wrong call, I tell you that and quote replacement instead. I don’t talk people into rebuilds that won’t last.
  3. Written rebuild scope listing every component I’m replacing, what’s staying, and the warranty terms.
  4. Install, usually 1 to 2 days for conventional, 1 to 3 days for geothermal depending on whether refrigerant work or loop pressure-testing is involved.
  5. Startup verification with refrigerant charge by weight, static pressure measured, and superheat/subcool documented on the invoice.
  6. Annual maintenance enrollment on Dave’s 360 PMA ($360/yr) or Geo 360 ($499/yr including loop repressurization) to protect the rebuild.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does HVAC rebuild cost in Oklahoma?

Conventional rebuilds run $3,500 to $5,500 installed. Geothermal rebuilds start at $3,500. Compared to $15,000 to $30,000 for full replacement, that’s $10,000 to $25,000 back in your pocket when the system has good bones.

What’s the warranty on a rebuilt HVAC system?

1 to 2 years parts and labor on conventional. Up to 5 years on geothermal when the ground loop tests good on pressure and flow. OEM compressor warranties carry through when the original coverage is still active.

Can you rebuild a geothermal heat pump?

Yes. Geothermal is what I’m known for. As long as the loop tests good, I rebuild the heat pump unit starting at $3,500 with up to 5 years warranty. IGSHPA Accredited and ClimateMaster GeoElite dealer.

How long does an HVAC rebuild last?

8 to 10 more years on conventional with annual maintenance. 10 to 15 more years on geothermal because the loop is the expensive piece and it’s already in the ground.

When should I replace my HVAC instead of rebuilding?

20+ years old with multiple failures, R-22 system with coil leak, original sizing wrong on Manual J, or planning to sell within 5 years. Otherwise, rebuild usually wins.
