The Account

Wheeler Brothers runs a working ag and grain operation in Watonga, out in Blaine County, with truck scales, control rooms, office space, and shop buildings spread across more than one site. A Real Job: The Geothermal Loop Repair

In November 2019 the west office geo system on Russworm Drive quit putting out heat. I went out and found the geothermal loop empty of water, with a leak at the unit outlet fitting. I repaired the fitting, refilled the loop, and then found the loop pumps were not moving water. I brought a geothermal flush cart and an 80-micron filter, pulled both ClimateMaster loop pumps, and found one impeller broken and the other set of bearings going bad. I replaced both pumps, purged the air out of the loop, and got water flowing again.

While I was in it I found someone had put a single-stage thermostat on a two-stage system, and the blower had the wrong motor pulley and belt. I corrected the pulley and belt and flagged the thermostat. That is the kind of thing you only catch when you actually know geothermal. Most shops will not even open a commercial geo loop. I do this every week.
