The Federal Geothermal Tax Credit Is Gone. The Utility Money Is Not.

Right now there are Oklahoma homeowners sitting on quotes that still show that credit as a line item, waiting for the right moment to pull the trigger on a number that is not coming.

I would rather lose the sale than let somebody plan around money that no longer exists.

Paying in 2025 does not save it

This is where people get hurt. The test is not when you paid, when you signed, or when you put down a deposit. The test is when the system was placed in service. A project that was paid for in 2025 and finished in 2026 does not qualify.

I am not a tax professional and I will not act like one. Read the current IRS and ENERGY STAR guidance yourself, and take your situation to your own CPA. What I can tell you is what I will not do, which is write that credit onto a 2026 proposal to make my number look better.

Here is what is still real

None of this is a consolation prize. It is the money actually on the table in Oklahoma this year.

Commercial geothermal is a completely different section of the tax code and that credit is still very much alive, which I cover on the commercial geothermal tax credit page.

The honest part

Geothermal is a premium purchase. It costs more up front than a standard system, and losing the federal credit did not change that. What it buys is a machine that moves about $4.50 of heat for every $1 of electricity it uses. If the credit was the only reason it penciled for you, I will tell you that too.

Questions I get on this call

Is there still a federal tax credit for geothermal in Oklahoma in 2026?

Not for a residential system. The IRS states the credit is not available for any property placed in service after December 31, 2025. Commercial is a different section of the code and still alive. I am not a tax professional, so take your situation to your CPA and read the current IRS guidance.

I paid for my system in 2025. Do I still get the credit?

The test is when the system was placed in service, not when you paid. Paid in 2025 and finished in 2026 is the exact case that catches people. Your CPA confirms your situation.

So what money is actually left for geothermal in Oklahoma?
