Late summer and early fall is when the letters go out. A rate, a date to decide by, and the same math you did last August. Here is what nobody asks: how many more times do you want this conversation?

A price lock is not a price cut

A price lock caps how rough the ride gets. It does not lower what it costs to heat your house. You are still buying propane, and you will buy it again next year and every year after.

That can be a reasonable move, and I am not calling it a scam. I am saying it manages a bill you already agreed to keep paying forever. Most people never price the other option, because they decided long ago it was not for them.

What changes when the fuel is gone

A geothermal heat pump does not burn anything. It moves heat already sitting in the ground under your property, and that ground holds about the same temperature in February as in July. The steadiness is the whole trick.

It runs on electricity, and I want that said out loud. You will still get a power bill. What stops is buying propane and riding its price. Geothermal moves about $4.50 of heat for every $1 of electricity, and over a year it takes roughly 50 percent of your heating and cooling energy use off the table. Energy use, not your bill.

No delivery. No tank to watch. No fill call in an ice storm.

The money is only part of this, and with my rural customers it is usually not what comes up first. Nothing to schedule. No gauge to read on a cold morning, no minimum fill, no driver who cannot get down a glazed-over road, nothing that runs dry at two in the morning in the worst week of the year. Which is exactly when propane runs dry, because that is when everybody is burning it.

Keep the tank if you want it

Moving your heat off propane does not mean the tank leaves. If a whole-house generator runs on propane, keep it. If you cook on a propane range, keep it. Plenty of my customers heat with geothermal and still keep a tank out back. What changes is the size of the fill.

Coming off propane returns more than any other switch I do

Propane is the most expensive common heating fuel in Oklahoma, so replacing it moves the most money. Of every fuel switch I do, this one returns the most, by a wide margin.

What decides your number is your house, not a chart. How much propane it burns in a winter, what you pay for it, how tight the house is, what you are replacing, your electric rate, and whether your ground trenches or drills. Every one of those moves. Yes, it costs more up front. Here is what makes it doable.

Geothermal is a premium purchase. It costs more up front than another propane furnace, and anybody telling you otherwise is selling something. Here is what makes it work.

• There is a $0 down path. I can pre-qualify you on the phone in a few minutes. I do not publish payment examples or program details, because the approved wording is not in my hands yet. You hear the real numbers from me.
• Five lenders, and only these five. Synchrony, up to 18 months at 0 percent. Wells Fargo. Wisetack, soft credit pull. Klarna, four interest free payments over six weeks. JB Financing, thirty-plus lenders on a soft pull, scores as low as 590.
• A utility rebate may apply. Some Oklahoma town utilities rebate up to $800 per cooling ton on a qualifying geothermal system. That is a ceiling, not a promise. A city may rebate at any level and the power authority matches it 50/50 up to the amounts shown, so the level your town elects decides it. It also requires a desuperheater or integrated water heater doing your domestic hot water, which I design in from the start.
• The federal residential credit is gone. Section 25D is expired. The IRS wording is that it is not available for any property placed in service after December 31, 2025. Take tax questions to your own tax professional.

Member towns include Kingfisher, Okeene, Watonga and Edmond. If your power comes from a rural electric cooperative instead, and a lot of propane customers are, your co-op runs its own program. Either way I confirm the level with your utility first. Have your bill handy.

Should I sign a propane pre-buy contract in Oklahoma this year?

Do I have to get rid of my propane tank if I put in geothermal?

No. If the tank feeds a whole-house generator or a propane range, leave it. Geothermal replaces the heating load, which is what actually empties the tank.
