Geothermal vs Propane in Oklahoma: Stop Racing the Fall Fill-Up
Geothermal runs on the electricity you already buy at a known rate, moves heat instead of burning fuel, and ends the October propane gamble for good. I have watched the same routine every fall for 47 years around Kingfisher, Blaine, and Major County: call around for a price, guess whether to lock the rate, watch a tank gauge all winter, pay a delivery minimum, and eat whatever the market did.
Full Coverage Geothermal Plan: $0 upfront
If the upfront cost is what stands between you and geothermal, there is a lease path. I am an Approved Palmetto Partner, and Hartzell’s Full Coverage Geothermal Plan is a 10-year lease: $0 upfront and 120 monthly payments.
One payment covers the system, the ground loop and the install, and the maintenance, filters, repairs and service labor ride inside it, subject to the terms of the contract. I stay your service company for the whole term.
- Approved example: a $25,000 system is $225 a month.
- Approved example: a $40,000 system is $332 a month.
Both examples are a flat payment: the same payment every month for all 10 years. Or you can start lower with a small yearly increase (0.99% or 1.99%); you pay the same total either way. Nothing is due up front, and extra payments are optional. At the end of the term you can buy it out for about 22% of the job cost, about $5,500 on a $25,000 system or about $8,800 on a $40,000 system.
Your payment depends on the total cost of your job. These are examples, not a quote. Disclaimer: Labor, filters, and preventative maintenance are all subject to terms and limitations included in the contract. Inflation-Proof Protection is based on expected inflation costs on services covered under the contract for the ten-year term. Interest Paid is estimated on an annual percentage rate expressed as a yearly percentage and does not imply that the Monthly Payment is exclusive of lease costs related to the geothermal system.
It is a lease, not a purchase. Palmetto owns the system during the term, so $0 upfront does not mean you own it at the end unless you take the buyout. It is for residential geothermal only, and not for projects over $200,000.

You already know this routine
I have run service trucks through rural Oklahoma propane country for 47 years, and the fall routine has not changed. You call two or three suppliers for a price. You gamble on whether to lock a pre-buy rate now or wait and hope the market drops. You watch the gauge outside all winter, because running out in January is not a bill problem, it is a burst-pipe problem. You pay a delivery minimum whether the truck brings you 100 gallons or 400. And at the end of it, you paid whatever the market did, because you do not set the price of propane, the market does.
I am not going to hand you a made-up price per gallon here. What is true every single year, whatever the number turns out to be, is the volatility and the pre-buy gamble itself. That part never changes.
A market you gamble on vs a rate you already know
Propane is a commodity. Your cost per gallon moves with weather demand, crude and natural gas liquids markets, and how much diesel it takes to get a truck down your road. None of that is in your control, and the pre-buy contract is a bet, not a fix, since you still have to guess the direction of the market before the season starts.
A geothermal heat pump runs on electricity, the same utility account you already have and already budget for every month. A ClimateMaster Tranquility with water desuperheater moves heat that is already sitting in the ground at a steady temperature instead of burning anything to make heat, and ENERGY STAR certified geothermal heat pumps are on average over 45% more energy efficient than standard options. How much that shows up at your meter depends on your house, so I will look at your system and your bills and tell you what to expect.
I will not pretend geothermal is the cheap option. It costs more up front than a propane furnace, by a real amount, and the estimate is where I show you that number honestly. What you are buying with that extra up-front cost is control: no more calling around every fall, no more gauge-watching, no more delivery minimum.
Dual fuel: keep the propane furnace, add geothermal
Plenty of people are not ready to pull the propane furnace out, and you do not have to. On a properly sized ground loop, the dirt a few feet down stays close to the same temperature all year, so a geothermal system does not lose capacity in a cold snap the way an air-source heat pump can. That means the geo side can carry the full heating load on its own, and the propane furnace stays wired in purely as backup instead of electric strip heat, redundancy for a hard freeze or a service call, not a system that cannot keep up.
Some households go a different way: size the ground loop for most of the load to keep the loop field smaller and the up-front cost down, and let the existing propane furnace top off the coldest handful of days a year. Either path, dual fuel means you still own a propane furnace, you just stop being married to the tank as your only heat source.

Financing is not just for the equipment. It covers the install, and if cost is the hurdle, say so and I will walk you through the paths, including the full breakdown on my geothermal financing page and the $0-down geothermal lease.
Check current IRS and ENERGY STAR guidance and ask a tax professional about your situation.
Propane customers are not only in my seven counties
My daily service trucks run Kingfisher, Canadian, Oklahoma, Garfield, Major, Logan, and Blaine counties. Geothermal is different. For a ground loop, my licensed driller loads up and comes to your property across Oklahoma and into most of the states that border it, depending on the project, which matters because rural propane customers are exactly the households a nearby geothermal option has usually skipped.
- 47 years on tools. I have watched the propane pre-buy season come and go every fall of my career.
- IGSHPA Accredited. The ground-loop credential, the part of a geothermal job you never see again after backfill.
- ClimateMaster GeoElite dealer. Factory-backed on the Tranquility line I install the most.

Geothermal vs propane questions I actually get
Is geothermal cheaper than propane in Oklahoma?
No, and I will not tell you it is. Geothermal costs more up front than a propane furnace. What it buys you is a known electric rate instead of a market you gamble on every October, plus a system that moves heat instead of burning fuel to make it. Financing, including $0 down and 120 payments on qualifying projects, is how most people close that up-front gap.
Can I keep my propane furnace as backup?
Yes. That is exactly what dual fuel means here. On a properly sized ground loop the geothermal side can carry the whole heating load on its own, since the ground stays a steady temperature year round, and the propane furnace stays wired in as backup instead of electric strip heat.
What is dual fuel heating?
Dual fuel means two heat sources stay connected to the same system instead of one. With geothermal, that usually means the propane furnace remains as backup or, on a right-sized loop, tops off the coldest handful of days a year while the geothermal system carries the rest. You are not required to remove the propane furnace to add geothermal.
How much does a geothermal system cost in Oklahoma?
I have to see your house and your ground before I can give you an exact number, and that Free Geothermal Consultation costs nothing, with no dispatch fee, and for geothermal I travel across Oklahoma and into most of the states that border it, depending on the customer and the project. It costs more up front than a propane furnace or an air-source system. The Full Coverage Geothermal Plan lease, $0 down and 120 payments, is available for qualifying projects, and the approved payment examples are in the Full Coverage Geothermal Plan box near the top of this page. The buyout at the end of the term, about 22% of the job cost, is in that box too, so $0 upfront does not mean you own the system unless you buy it out. Palmetto owns it during the lease, and I am an Approved Palmetto Partner.
Does geothermal work through an Oklahoma winter?
Yes. A few feet down, the ground stays close to the same temperature all year, summer or a January norther, so a geothermal heat pump does not lose capacity in a cold snap the way an air-source unit can. That steadiness is a big part of why geothermal holds its efficiency when the weather turns.
Do I have to sign a propane pre-buy contract if I go geothermal?
Not for the geothermal system itself, since it runs on electricity. If you keep a propane furnace as dual fuel backup, whether you pre-buy for that backup fuel is your call, and most households burn a lot less of it once geothermal is carrying the load.
Stop bidding for winter fuel every October
Tell me where your house is and whether you want to keep the propane furnace as backup or go all electric. I will give you a real number, in writing, before I leave.
