Where Kingfisher County Came From

On April 22, 1889, a pistol fired at noon and thousands of people rushed across the border in the Oklahoma Land Run. Kingfisher County was born that afternoon, out of dust and chaos and people who had nothing and needed everything. The county was not even called Kingfisher at first. It was County Five. On August 5, 1890, voters chose the name “Kingfisher” over “Hennessey” and “Harrison” in a public election. Kingfisher won.

The Chisholm Trail ran through this county. Not as a tourist attraction. As the working highway that moved millions of Texas longhorns north to Kansas railheads between 1867 and 1884. The western freight route came right through the Kingfisher Stage Station, which sat on what is now downtown Kingfisher. My shop is on S Main St. That land had cattle drovers camping on it 140 years ago. On July 6, 1874, a freighter named Pat Hennessey was tied to his wagon wheel and burned alive by Cheyenne warriors near the Kingfisher-Garfield county line. The town of Hennessey is named after him. That is the kind of history that does not make it into the tourism brochures.

Sam Walton was born in Kingfisher on March 29, 1918. W.C. Coleman sold his first lantern here in 1903, and that is where the Coleman Company started. The county has always been a place where people with a vision showed up and built something from scratch.

The Volga Germans settled here too. German families who had lived on the Russian steppes before emigrating, looking for flat farmland and religious freedom. They named one of their towns Kiel, after the German port city. In 1918, with World War I anti-German sentiment running hot, the community voted to rename it Loyal, a whole town choosing a new name to prove its place in this country. The population today is about 71 people. I have been in homes there. The land and the people in this county have always had more history than most folks outside it realize.
