Hydro, Oklahoma: Route 66’s 100th Year and the Woman Who Never Left

Route 66 was established November 11, 1926. In November 2026 it turns 100 years old. Hydro has been on that road the entire century. The town was named in 1901 for the good water found here, and when the highway came through in 1926, Hydro became a stop on the most famous road in America.

Lucille Hamons opened her service station here in 1941 and ran it until she died on August 18, 2000. Fifty-nine years at the same pumps, the same stretch of old Route 66. When I-40 bypassed Hydro in 1971 and took the through traffic with it, Lucille did not close. She stayed. She talked to the people who still came. They called her the Mother of the Mother Road, and she earned it. The station is still standing.

I have been out to homes in Hydro and along the Route 66 corridor on service calls, and what I find are houses that were built when the highway was the lifeblood of the town. Solid construction from the 1940s and 1950s, but heating and cooling systems that were added later and have been patched along ever since. If your system is original to the house or close to it, it has probably had a good run. When it is time to replace it, call me at 405-375-4822 and I will come out and tell you what the right answer is for your specific house.

Is 2026 a big year for Route 66 and Hydro?

Route 66 was officially established November 11, 1926. November 11, 2026 is the 100th anniversary. Hydro has been on that highway the whole century. Lucille Hamons ran her service station on this stretch of road from 1941 until 2000, fifty-nine years at the same pumps. She is still remembered as the Mother of the Mother Road. The centennial is bringing renewed attention to Route 66 communities, and Hydro is one of the original stops.

How old are most homes in Hydro, and does that affect HVAC?

A lot of the homes along old Route 66 in Hydro were built in the 1940s and 1950s, when the highway was still the main artery through town. The original construction is often solid, but the heating and cooling was added later and has been updated piecemeal over the decades. I find systems out here that are 20 to 30 years old, still running but working too hard. If your system is that age and you are spending money on repairs, call 405-375-4822 and I will come out and give you an honest assessment. Sometimes a tune-up is the right answer. Sometimes replacement is. I will tell you which one makes financial sense for your house.

About Hydro, Oklahoma

Hydro is in Caddo County, about 60 miles southeast of Kingfisher on the old Route 66 corridor. The town started its annual free fair in September 1904, one of the oldest continuously running free fairs in Oklahoma. Caddo County is CKenergy territory: $2,000/ton geothermal rebate, up to $24,000. The red clay soils in this part of Oklahoma hold thermal energy well, good conditions for geothermal loop performance.
