Is Geothermal Worth It in Oklahoma?
For the right house, yes. Geothermal pays back best on homes heating with propane or electric resistance, with room for a loop, owned by someone staying put. On a small house with cheap natural gas and a plan to move, it usually is not.

I have been doing this 47 years and I would rather talk you out of a system than sell you one you resent. So here is the actual test I run, in the order I run it.
What are you heating with right now?
This is the single biggest variable and nothing else comes close. Geothermal saves you the difference between what you spend now and what the new system spends. If what you spend now is enormous, the difference is enormous.
- Propane
- The best case in Oklahoma. Rural propane customers see the largest change, and this is where a near-half drop in the actual bill is realistic.
- Electric resistance heat
- Also excellent. Resistance heat is the most expensive way to heat a house. Replacing it with a machine returning about $4.50 of heat per $1 of electricity is a dramatic change.
- An old, failing heat pump or AC
- Strong case, especially if the system is already due for replacement and you are choosing what goes in.
- Cheap natural gas, modern furnace
- The hardest case. The furnace is efficient and the fuel is inexpensive, so the operating savings shrink and the payback stretches out.
Can the ground take a loop?
Geothermal is two purchases: the machine, and the loop in the ground. If the ground is difficult, the loop gets expensive and the whole calculation shifts.
Out around Kingfisher, Okarche, Hennessey, and most of the rural northwest, acreage is normal and a horizontal loop in trenches is usually the cheapest path. In Edmond, Yukon, and in-town lots where the yard is small, the loop goes vertical instead, with bores drilled straight down. That trades yard for drilling cost. If you have a pond of real size and depth, that is frequently the least expensive option of the three.
Oklahoma clay is fine to work in. It is most of what I install in. Soil type changes how much loop you need, not whether it works. Rock changes the method and the price, and that is one of several reasons I will not quote geothermal over the phone.
How long are you staying?
Geothermal is a long-horizon purchase. The indoor unit runs a couple of decades because it lives in a conditioned space instead of baking outside in Oklahoma weather. The loop is the long-life part and outlasts several generations of equipment. You buy the loop once and the next system connects to what is already there.
If you are staying, that arithmetic is in your favor and it compounds. If you are moving in two or three years, you are the one paying for a loop that somebody else will enjoy, and I would rather put you in a good conventional system and keep your money.
What shape is the duct system in?
This is the test people skip and then blame the equipment. Geothermal moves a larger volume of cooler air than a furnace does. Ductwork that got away with being undersized or leaky behind a furnace will not get away with it here.
An older house with a leaky envelope and bad ducts will disappoint you on any system you buy. Fix the load first, or the geothermal is paying to condition your attic at premium prices. I check the ducts on the survey and I tell you before you spend the money, not after.
When I tell people no
I tell people geothermal is not their answer when the house is small and already on cheap natural gas, when the ducts need more work than the owner wants to do, when a move is likely inside a few years, or when the only reason for the interest is a savings number somebody quoted that was never achievable.
On that last one: you will see the claim that geothermal cuts a power bill in half all over the internet. The honest version is up to about half of your heating and cooling energy use versus an old system, and heating and cooling is only part of what your meter counts. Read what geothermal actually does to your electric bill before you let anybody sell you on a number.
And geothermal costs more up front than a conventional system. Always. It is a premium system, not a discount one. What changes that math is not pretending otherwise, it is the payment path: a $0 down geothermal lease where one monthly payment covers everything, or geothermal financing including up to 18 months at 0% through Synchrony.
Questions people ask before they commit
Is geothermal worth it in Oklahoma clay soil?
Yes. Clay is workable and it is most of what I install in. Soil type changes how much loop you need, not whether the system works. Rock is what changes the method and the cost, and that gets settled at the site survey.
Is geothermal worth it on an older house?
Sometimes. An older house with a poor envelope and bad ducts will underperform on any system. If we fix the load and the duct system, geothermal is excellent in an old farmhouse. If we do not, it will not save what you hoped.
Why does geothermal cost so much more up front?
Because you are buying a second system on top of the equipment: the ground loop, which involves trenching or drilling in your yard. It is also the part that lasts the longest, so you pay for it once and it serves multiple generations of equipment.
Is there a federal tax credit for geothermal in 2026?
