How Long Does a Geothermal System Last?
I am Dave Hartzell. 47 years in HVAC, 15+ years running Hartzell’s Heat & Air out of Kingfisher, IGSHPA accredited on the geothermal side. This comes up on nearly every geothermal estimate I write, and the honest answer is that it is two questions wearing one coat.
A geothermal system is not one machine with one lifespan. It is a buried loop and a piece of indoor equipment, and they do not wear out on the same clock. The loop is built to outlive the equipment by a wide margin. Once you see that split, the whole ownership picture looks different.
The loop is the long half, and it is not close
The loop is high density polyethylene pipe buried in the ground. Where two pieces meet, they are heat fused: the ends are melted and pressed together so the joint becomes the same continuous piece of pipe as the rest of the run. There is no gasket to dry out, no clamp to loosen, no threaded fitting to back itself off over time.
Then look at what it lives in. Down below the frost line the ground is dark, steady in temperature, and boring. No sunlight breaking the pipe down. No freeze and thaw cycling. Nothing moving inside it but water and antifreeze at low pressure. Fused HDPE is what towns run gas and water through, for exactly these reasons.
Here is my own number, and it is the one I would want if I were the customer. In 47 years I have seen three loop leaks. Three. And when a system does lose fluid, the buried pipe is almost never the culprit, which is the whole point of why a geothermal loop keeps leaking.
Why the indoor equipment outlives the box in the side yard
Getting that full life out of the equipment depends on who set it up. I am IGSHPA accredited and a ClimateMaster GeoElite dealer, so a unit I install is commissioned against the factory startup values, and if something does fail inside the warranty I process that claim myself.
The equipment does not last as long as the loop. Nothing with a compressor in it does. But it lasts longer than the conventional equipment it replaced, and the reason is plain enough that people distrust it: it lives indoors.
Go look at a conventional condenser. It sits out in the weather every day of its life. Oklahoma hail. Direct sun on the cabinet and the coil. Ice in January. Cottonwood fuzz and grass clippings packing the fins. Wasps, mice and snakes in the base pan. Somebody’s weed trimmer. And the 105 degree July afternoon, which is precisely when it is asked to work its hardest, dumping heat into air that is already hot.
A geothermal unit sits in a closet, a basement, a mechanical room or a conditioned attic space. It never sees any of that. It rejects heat into ground that holds near the same temperature all year, so the worst day of the summer is not the worst day for the machine. Less abuse from outside and less strain from inside, on the same components.
That is the argument, and it does not need a number attached to be true.
What that means over the life of one loop
Frame the comparison across the life of the loop and conventional HVAC stops looking like a purchase and starts looking like a subscription.
Conventional equipment is a repeating buy. When it is done you buy the whole thing again, outdoor unit included, and then later you do it again. Geothermal is one loop, plus a smaller equipment swap down the road.
When the geothermal equipment finally comes due, the expensive part is already in the ground and it stays there. The second system is a smaller job than the first one was.
That is the piece most people miss when they look only at the number on the first invoice.
What actually decides how long yours lasts
Four things do most of the work, and three of them are settled before the system is ever switched on.
- Correct sizing. This is the big one. An oversized system satisfies the thermostat fast, shuts off, and fires again. That is short cycling, and it is the most dependable way to wear out a compressor early. Bigger is not safer, it is worse. Start with what a ton of geothermal means.
- Loop fluid and antifreeze condition. The fluid in a closed loop is a working part, not filler. Its condition, its concentration, and whether air ever got into the loop all change how hard the equipment has to work to move the same heat.
- Flow. Everything depends on fluid moving through the exchanger and air moving across the coil. A restricted loop, a struggling circulator, air in the piping, or a filter nobody changed all shove the equipment toward the edge of where it was designed to run.
- Whether anybody ever maintained it. Plenty of geothermal systems get installed and then ignored for years, because they are quiet and out of sight and nothing outside reminds you they exist. Here is what geothermal maintenance in Oklahoma actually involves.
A properly sized, properly flowing, maintained system and a neglected one are not the same product with different luck.
What fails, and roughly in what order
I will describe this qualitatively. Hanging a year count or a failure rate on a component would be an invention.
- Compressors. The part carrying the most mechanical and electrical stress, and generally the largest single repair on the machine.
- Pumps and circulators. Moving parts that run whenever the system runs.
- Controls and boards. Electronics live on a different curve than mechanical parts, and Oklahoma storm season is hard on them.
- Mechanical fittings and connections. Valves, flow center connections, and the plumbing inside the house. The places where something was assembled by hand.

Why I will not print a number of years
Anybody who hands you a flat lifespan over the phone, before seeing the house, is guessing with your money.
Manufacturer figures exist and industry figures exist, and they do not agree with each other. I am not going to pick the most flattering one, print it, and be held to it on your system when the sizing or the maintenance was the real story.
The number that actually governs your equipment is the written warranty on the specific model I quote you, and I hand you that document with the estimate. That is a commitment somebody signed, not a marketing average.
What decides your real outcome is sizing, loop, and maintenance. That is exactly why every geothermal job I do starts with a geothermal site analysis instead of a number.
