What actually happens in the audit
Six things, in this order. None of them is a sales presentation.
- Your last 12 months of real usage
Kilowatt hours, propane gallons, gas ccf, month by month, straight off your account. Twelve months catches your January and your August, where the truth about a house lives.
- A real load calculation, room by room
Square footage rules of thumb are how systems get oversized, and oversized is both a comfort problem and an efficiency problem. It short cycles and never pulls the humidity out. I measure instead.
- The envelope, including the ducts
Insulation, windows, duct leakage. Duct losses can undo a good machine. If a third of your conditioned air goes to the attic, the best equipment made cannot fix it.
- What you run now, and what it truly costs
Fuel type, age, nameplate efficiency, and the real operating cost I back into from your usage. Nobody knows what you would save until somebody establishes what you spend.
- Geothermal modeled against your numbers, loop broken out
I run geothermal against your own consumption and show you the spread. The loop gets its own line. It is the biggest single item and most quotes bury it in one total, which is how people get surprised.
- You keep the numbers
Written down, in your hands, whether or not you buy from me. If geothermal does not pay on your house, that goes in the report too.
Geothermal is a premium purchase
It costs more up front than a conventional system. Always. You are buying two things instead of one: the machine, and the loop. Anybody calling geothermal the cheap option is selling you something. It earns that back over years, and the audit shows how many.
Geothermal cuts roughly 50% of your heating and cooling energy use against an old system. Energy use is not the same thing as your power bill, because your meter also carries the water heater, the refrigerator, the dryer and the lights. What geothermal does to your electric bill is the long version.
The number I like better, because it is a machine fact: geothermal returns about $4.50 of heat for every $1 of electricity. It is not making heat, it is moving heat already in the ground.
What moves your payback, and why I will not quote one number
There is no universal geothermal payback. Anybody handing you one has not looked at your house.
- Propane or electric resistance
- The fastest payback in Oklahoma by a wide margin. Both are expensive ways to make heat.
- An efficient natural gas furnace
- The slowest. The furnace is efficient and the fuel is cheap, so the years stretch out.
- The ground and the loop type
- Horizontal trenches on acreage, vertical bores on a small lot, or a pond loop if you have water.
- The condition of your ducts
- Bad ducts cap what any system can deliver. Fix the load first or you pay premium prices to heat your attic.
- How long you are staying
- The loop outlasts several generations of equipment. Move in three years and you bought one for the next owner.

The federal residential tax credit is gone
If you are waiting on the 30% federal credit you heard about, stop waiting. Section 25D was terminated for expenditures after December 31, 2025. There is no federal residential geothermal credit for a system placed in service in 2026, and a 2025 deposit does not preserve it if the install finishes in 2026. I would rather tell you that than let you budget around money that is not coming. Check current IRS and ENERGY STAR guidance, and confirm anything tax related with your own tax professional.
The Oklahoma rebates that took its place
With the federal credit gone, your electric co-op is the real lever, and which co-op serves your meter swings it by thousands.
CKenergy: $2,000 per ton, new installs and retrofits, up to $24,000 per member, effective January 1, 2026. On a 4 ton system that is $8,000, the strongest geothermal rebate an Oklahoma homeowner can get right now.
That one is for CKenergy members. Over 12 tons and commercial are case by case, and the geo to geo replacement rebate is discontinued. Rebates are priced by the ton, so it helps to know what a ton is. Other co-ops publish their own:
- Rural Electric Co-op, Lindsay
- $1,050 per ton, new or conversion, plus $225 per desuperheater.
- East Central Electric
- $750 per ton, complete system.
- Oklahoma Lake Region
- $750 per ton, complete system.
- Cookson Hills Electric
- $500 per ton, complete system, capped at 50% of the cost.
- Cimarron Electric
- $600 flat for geothermal.
- OMPA WISE municipal utilities
- $800 per cooling ton on electric.
OG&E residential efficiency rebates are closed for 2026 and return in 2027, so do not budget on one. OEC, CVEC and KPWA have run programs, but I will not quote a 2026 amount I have not verified for your address. I check which are open for your meter when I write your quote. If OG&E serves you, your levers this year are the 0% financing below and the free estimate.
What the audit costs, and how people pay for the system
The audit is what my free new system estimate looks like when geothermal is on the table, so it is free. That is different from a repair call: if your system is down and needs diagnosed, that is a service call, $210 residential or $348 flat for geothermal, any hour.
