Geothermal vs Trane 18 SEER Calculator
The honest premium-vs-premium comparison, from a dealer who sells both

I install ClimateMaster geothermal and I am also a Trane TCS SELECT dealer, so I am not comparing geothermal against some builder-grade unit to make it look good. This tool sets a ClimateMaster Tranquility 22 geothermal heat pump against a Trane 18 TruComfort variable speed heat pump, the XV18, using each manufacturer’s own published efficiency ratings. Put in your electric rate and see what those ratings work out to at your price.

Compare the Published Ratings

Where every number comes from: the ClimateMaster figures are the ground loop ratings from ClimateMaster’s own Tranquility 22 Digital (TZ) performance sheet (AHRI/ISO/ASHRAE 13256-1). The Trane figures, up to 18.1 SEER2 and 8.5 HSPF2, are from Trane’s own 18 TruComfort Variable Speed Heat Pump page. I do not plug in my own guess at your electric rate. You enter it, and the tool does the arithmetic.

4 ton: COP 3.7 full load, 4.1 part load

How it is testedSteady test at a set loop water temperature (77 and 68 degrees cooling, 32 and 41 degrees heating), 15% methanol loopSeasonal rating; the real number depends on the indoor coil it is matched with

This is an estimate from manufacturer-rated efficiency at the electric rate you entered. It is not a promise for your house, and neither manufacturer publishes a savings figure for one of these systems against the other, so I do not print one. ClimateMaster’s EER and COP are steady tests at a set loop water temperature. Trane’s SEER2 and HSPF2 are seasonal ratings. Different tests, so this is a side by side look at the ratings, not a measured head-to-head. Your real bill depends on your house, your ductwork, the loop design, the weather and how you run the thermostat.

Domestic hot water, the desuperheater edge

A Tranquility can carry a desuperheater that uses heat the system is already moving to preheat your water heater, mostly during cooling season. How much it trims your water heating depends on how much hot water your house uses, so I do not put a dollar figure on it. The Trane 18 has no desuperheater option.

Installed price and rebates

Geothermal costs more to install because of the ground loop, and there is yard disruption during the dig. I put the installed price for both systems in writing at a free in-home estimate, after the load calculation. Rebates depend on who sends your electric bill, and I check the current official program before I count any amount. Start with my Oklahoma utility rebate finder.

If you want the reasoning behind the calculator instead of the numbers, my honest Trane heat pump versus geothermal comparison lays out where each one genuinely wins.

Why I Compare Geothermal Against My Own Trane 18 SEER, Not a Cheap Unit

Most geothermal savings pitches compare against whatever is cheapest to beat. I do not need to do that. I am a Trane TCS SELECT dealer and a ClimateMaster GeoElite dealer, so the Trane 18 SEER in this calculator is a system I stand behind and would happily install in my own house. When geothermal still comes out ahead against that, on Oklahoma’s real winters and real summers, it is because the ground stays around 60 degrees year round while outdoor air swings from single digits to over 100. An air-source heat pump, even a very good one, has to fight that swing. Geothermal does not.

The honest tradeoff: geothermal costs more to install because of the ground loop, and there is real disruption in the yard while my driller drills or my crew trenches it in. Utility rebates and the desuperheater’s hot water offset help close that gap, and financing spreads it out further. Whether it pencils out for your house depends on your rate, your usage, and how long you plan to stay. I will tell you straight if a Trane makes more sense for your situation.

How much does a geothermal system save compared to a Trane 18 SEER heat pump in Oklahoma?

Neither ClimateMaster nor Trane publishes a savings figure for one of these systems against the other, so I do not print one. What I show above is each manufacturer’s own published efficiency rating, linked to the source, and what those ratings work out to at the electric rate you enter. That is an estimate from rated efficiency, not a promise for your house. Your real result depends on the house, the loop and how you live in it.

Is ClimateMaster Tranquility better than a Trane 18 SEER heat pump?

I sell both and I am a dealer for both, a Trane TCS SELECT dealer and a ClimateMaster GeoElite dealer. Tranquility geothermal draws off stable ground temperature instead of outdoor air, so it holds its efficiency on the coldest Oklahoma nights when an air-source heat pump like the Trane is working hardest. The tradeoff is a higher install cost and a loop dig in the yard.

What does a geothermal desuperheater do for hot water?

It captures heat the system is already rejecting while the compressor runs and uses it to preheat your water heater. How much that trims your water heating bill depends on how much hot water you use, and most of it comes during cooling season. The Trane 18 SEER has no equivalent, it is a Tranquility-only advantage.

How much does geothermal cost compared to a Trane 18 SEER system in Kingfisher Oklahoma?

Geothermal costs more up front, mainly the ground loop. In the 7 counties I run daily, the utility rebate depends on your utility. OG&E residential rebates in Oklahoma are closed for 2026 and return in 2027, so tell me your utility and I will check the current program before I quote. I handle that paperwork. The exact number needs a real in-home estimate, this calculator is a starting point, not a quote.

Can I finance a geothermal system with $0 down in Oklahoma?

For qualified homeowners, Hartzell can review the Full Coverage Geothermal Plan, powered by Palmetto, and what it covers is subject to the terms of the contract. Approved examples show $0 upfront and 120 monthly payments, but site numbers are illustrations only, not a quote or approval. Final payment, tax, rebate, buyout, coverage, renewal, and eligibility terms come from Palmetto and the agreement. I also work with Synchrony, Wells Fargo, Wisetack, Klarna, and JB Financing for repairs, PMAs, or a Trane system instead.

Free Geothermal vs Trane Estimate

I will run a real Manual J load calculation, quote both a ClimateMaster Tranquility geothermal system and a Trane 18 SEER heat pump for your house, and tell you honestly which one makes more sense. No pressure.
