Trane Heat Pump Vs Geothermal In Oklahoma: An Honest Comparison
I sell both. I have been a Trane dealer here in Kingfisher for 10 years, and on the other side of the shop I am IGSHPA accredited and a ClimateMaster GeoElite dealer. So when you ask which one to buy, understand I get paid either way. I have no reason to push you toward the expensive one.
Here is the comparison the way I would give it in your kitchen, including where the air source Trane is flat out the better buy. I started at 18, 47 years ago, and 15+ of those years have been my own shop.
They Are Not Graded On The Same Test
Nearly every comparison chart online gets this wrong. An air source heat pump is rated under AHRI Standard 210/240 against outdoor air: cooling at 95 degrees, high temperature heating at 47, low temperature heating at 17. Geothermal is rated under a different standard, AHRI/ISO/ASHRAE 13256-1, against the temperature of the water coming back out of the loop.
So a “SEER2 versus COP” table is apples to oranges, because those numbers were never produced by the same test. The air source rating point moves with the weather outside your window. The geothermal rating point does not. One more caution on numbers: a SEER2 rating belongs to a specific outdoor and indoor pairing, not the condenser alone. The same outdoor unit on a different indoor coil carries a different certified rating. I quote the certified rating for the exact matched pair going in your house.
What Actually Happens When It Gets Cold
Capacity and efficiency both fall as outdoor air gets colder. That is physics, not sales talk. The compressor pulls heat out of the air outside, and there is less of it in cold air, so it works harder to move the same heat into your house.
Here is the part the brochures blur. A unit can be built to hold its heating capacity a long way down the temperature scale, and it holds it by pulling more electricity. So a unit can be honestly advertised as keeping full capacity on a cold morning while its efficiency that morning is nowhere near what it does on a mild day. Capacity retention and efficiency retention are two different claims. It keeps heating your house either way. Just ask which of those two claims the salesman is making.
Strip Heat Is The Line Item Nobody Shows You
Electric resistance heat, the strips in your air handler, is COP 1.0 by definition. One kWh in gives you 3,412 Btu out and not one Btu more. A heat pump does not make heat, it moves heat, so it delivers more heat than the electricity it eats. When the strips carry the house, you are buying heat the expensive way.
Some strip heat in a hard cold snap is normal. Strips running when they have no business running is not, and nobody catches it because the house still feels warm. What that costs depends on your load and run hours, so I would rather measure it than publish a guess.
Where The Trane Genuinely Wins
- Up front cost, and it is not close. A ground loop runs around $3,000 per ton at roughly 200 bore feet per ton, real money spent before equipment shows up. The Trane has no loop.
- Oklahoma is not Minnesota. Our winters are mild next to the northern markets where geothermal gets sold hardest on cold weather performance. Cold snaps here are short, and that argument carries less weight than a brochure written for Michigan wants you to think.
- Access. A drill rig needs room to get in and set up. Tight in town lot, mature trees, narrow side yard, and geothermal may not be practical.
- Rebates are not zero here. In Garfield and Major counties, Alfalfa Electric Co-op pays $150 per ton on air source. Less than ground source, but not nothing.
- A straight changeout is faster. Fewer trades, fewer days, less mess in the yard.
Where Geothermal Genuinely Wins
- The rating point holds still. Geothermal is rated on entering water temperature, so it does not shed capacity because the air outside dropped.
- Our summers run past the test condition. AHRI grades cooling at 95 degrees, and an Oklahoma August goes past 95 without trying. On the worst afternoons an air source unit is dumping heat into air hotter than the condition it was graded at. Geothermal rejects heat to the ground, and the ground is not having a heat wave.
- The rebate math is lopsided. The same Alfalfa Electric Co-op paying $150 per ton on air source pays $1,050 per ton on ground source. On a municipal system, OMPA pays up to $800 per ton. Read “up to” literally: that is a cap, not a guarantee, and it requires a desuperheater. Kingfisher, Okeene and Watonga are municipal towns.
The Tax Credit Question, Answered Straight
The residential federal credit, 25D, has expired. I say that plainly because it is still advertised around here. If somebody hands you a geothermal quote with a federal tax credit baked into the price, ask to see the current IRS document. Commercial work falls under Section 48. I am an HVAC contractor, not a tax professional, so take that question to yours.
What It Costs To Get Me Out There
There is always a dispatch fee and always a diagnostic fee. A residential service call is $210 flat: $99 dispatch plus $111 diagnostic. The $111 is not credited toward the repair, but if I leave a written repair estimate and you take the offer within 10 days, the $99 comes back. An after hours emergency is $309, non-refundable. A standalone AC tune-up is $229, and an estimate on a new system, either kind, is free.
Geothermal has its own number: $348 flat, any hour. You pay it up front, nothing about it is waived. It buys a full performance audit, written report and quote before I leave. No credit and no refund on a repair. One exception, new this month: if the system is done and you replace it with me, that $348 comes off the price of the new geothermal system. Financing runs through Synchrony, Wells Fargo, Wisetack, Klarna and JB Financing, and covers repairs too, not just installs.
What Geothermal Jobs Actually Land At
Three real installs, by town rather than name: a Broken Bow home at $42,497.15, a Lawton home at $23,825.00, a Piedmont home at $22,704.79. That spread is loop design, tonnage and access, not padding. Broken Bow and Lawton are a long way from Kingfisher, which is the point. My daily service area is seven counties, Kingfisher, Canadian, Oklahoma, Garfield, Major, Logan and Blaine, but geothermal I do statewide. I do not own a drill rig. I bring in a driller I trust and we work as a team, any size project.

Does a heat pump really quit working when it gets cold in Oklahoma?
No. It keeps heating. What changes is what that heat costs you, because the colder it gets outside the harder the compressor works to move the same heat inside. If the house needs more than the compressor can deliver, the electric strips make up the difference at resistance rates, and that is where a bill jumps. The real question is how it was sized and where the strips come on.
Is geothermal always the better system?
