What An 18 SEER2 Trane Heat Pump Actually Buys You In Oklahoma

I am Dave Hartzell. 47 years in HVAC, 15+ years running Hartzell’s Heat & Air out of Kingfisher, a Trane dealer for 10 of them. The question under every 18 SEER2 call: does the bigger number earn its price in a central Oklahoma house. Here is what I can prove, and when I say buy something else.

The floor a heat pump is measured against

A correction I make weekly. Oklahoma sits in the Department of Energy’s Southeast region for central air standards, in with Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana. There is no DOE region called “South-Central,” whatever a brochure told you.

The bigger correction: the Southeast regional add-on applies to air conditioners only, not to heat pumps. A split-system heat pump here answers to one national floor, same as every state: 14.3 SEER2 and 7.5 HSPF2, under 10 CFR 430.32(c)(5), for equipment built on or after January 1, 2023. That column carries no EER2 minimum either. Only the Southwest, meaning Arizona, California, Nevada and New Mexico, requires EER2. There is no “Oklahoma regional heat pump minimum.” An 18 clears a national floor of 14.3.

What 18 buys, in electricity, not dollars

SEER2 is cooling Btu delivered across a season divided by watt-hours burned across it. That definition does the arithmetic: for the same cooling job, electricity scales inversely with the number. 14.3 divided by 18 is about 0.79, so an 18 uses roughly 20 percent less cooling-season electricity than a unit at the floor. Flipped, the floor unit burns about 26 percent more.

That is a ratio of electricity for identical cooling output, not 20 percent off your bill. Your bill also answers to load, run hours, rate, sizing, charge, and what the ducts dump in the attic. I am not handing you a dollar figure or a payback year without a load model for your house.

Where it gets measured matters. AHRI 210/240 takes the cooling rating at 95F outdoor air, while the 1 percent cooling design temperature is 100F across Kingfisher, Canadian, Oklahoma, Garfield and Logan counties, 101F in Major, 99F in Blaine. Heating is friendlier: the low-temperature rating point is 17F against our 99 percent heating design of 13F.

The rating belongs to a matched pair, not the box outside

An 18 SEER2 rating belongs to one certified combination of outdoor unit and indoor coil. It is not a property of the condenser in your side yard, and the same outdoor unit on a different coil can rate lower. DOE certifies ratings per combination, and coil-only ratings generally land below factory-matched blower-coil ratings, because the test procedure assigns a coil-only rig more power-hungry fan assumptions. Ask which certified combination your 18 belongs to.

Where Trane’s numbers come from, and where they disagree

The documents do not line up, so I will not build a tidy side-by-side. Trane refreshed its residential portfolio in 2025 for R-454B and retired these names. The XV18 address on trane.com now serves the “18 TruComfort Variable Speed Heat Pump,” and Trane says the 20 TruComfort with WeatherGuard replaces the XV20i heat pump. The current variable-speed pages state no SEER2 at all. Here is the ladder with its provenance.

The 18.0 and the 17 are not the same generation of equipment, so calling that a one-point gap would be sloppy. And 8.5 HSPF2 sits on both: a real step above a 7.5 floor, but smaller than the cooling step.

Neither number covers backup heat. Electric strip heat is COP 1.0 by definition and a kilowatt-hour delivers 3,412 Btu, so a million Btu takes 293.1 kWh. At Oklahoma’s 13.38 cents per kWh residential average, EIA’s May 2026 figure, that is $39.21 per million Btu. Any heat pump above COP 1 beats that, and the gap narrows as it gets colder. On a hyper-heat Mitsubishi unit I have data for, capacity holds to 5F by drawing far more power: holding capacity and holding efficiency are different claims.

What separates an 18 from a single-stage is modulation, 25 to 100 percent capacity, running long and slow instead of cycling hard. That buys steadier temperature and better humidity in August, though I have no published comfort statistic and will not invent one. Trane’s brochures also disagree on the XV20i heating number, 8.7 HSPF2 in one and 9.0 in the other.

When I talk somebody out of it

  • Your load lands on a half size. Trane’s current variable-speed pages list 2, 3, 4 and 5 nominal tons. The single-stage pages list 1.5 through 5, halves included. If a real load calculation lands at 2.5 or 3.5 tons, have that conversation early.
  • The duct is the problem, not the equipment. Every rating assumes a correct match, correct charge and correct airflow. An 18 on leaky undersized duct is a number you will never see.
  • You are selling in two years. Trane’s limited warranty covers the original owner and spouse at the original residence, not transferable except under the terms on Trane’s registration site.
  • Nobody will register it in time. Trane’s base certificate runs five years unregistered on compressor, outdoor coil and parts, ten if registered within 60 days of the commencement date. One premium single-phase line gets twelve years on the compressor only, ten on coil and parts. So a quote reading “12 year parts warranty” is not what the certificate says, and I will not guess your row without the model number.
  • Your utility would rather pay for geothermal. In Garfield and Major counties, Alfalfa Electric Cooperative’s incentive is $1,050 per ton ground source against $150 per ton air source. Kingfisher, Okeene and Watonga are municipal, and OMPA pays up to $800 per cooling ton on geothermal, a cap and not a guarantee, requiring a desuperheater. Loop cost runs around $3,000 per ton, and roughly 200 bore feet per ton. Confirm with your utility.
  • You want a tax credit to close the gap. The residential federal credit, 25D, has expired. I am not penciling in a credit that is gone, and I am not your tax advisor. Ask a tax professional.

What a visit costs

A new-system estimate is free. I run the load calculation, look at the duct, and put a written number on the matched combination going in.

A repair call is $210 flat: $99 dispatch plus $111 diagnostic. The $111 is not credited toward the repair. Both fees are charged. The $111 diagnostic is not credited or refunded. If a written residential repair estimate is accepted within 10 days, the $99 dispatch fee may be returned as the applicable repair credit. After hours is $309, $198 dispatch plus $111 diagnostic, non-refundable. There is always a dispatch fee and always a diagnostic fee. A standalone AC tune-up is $229.

Plans: One Visit Spring or Fall 360, $199 a year, one visit, no repair discount. Spring and Fall 360, $360, two visits, 10% off repairs up to $300, two filters I install one per visit. Full Year 360, $499, 10% off repairs up to $300, filters all year, extras picked up at the shop when you call the office, and the $198 emergency dispatch waived twice a plan year, though the $111 diagnostic is still charged. Questions I get

Is 18 SEER2 overkill for an Oklahoma house?

Not automatically, but the case is modulation and comfort more than the rating. Whether it pays depends on your run hours.

Does Oklahoma make you buy a higher efficiency heat pump than other states?

No. Oklahoma is in DOE’s Southeast region, but that regional add-on applies to air conditioners only. Heat pumps everywhere answer to the same national floor, 14.3 SEER2 and 7.5 HSPF2.

Will an 18 SEER2 heat pump cut my summer bill by 20 percent?

That is not what it means. It uses about 20 percent less electricity for the same cooling. Your bill also depends on load, run hours, rate, sizing, charge and duct losses. Anybody promising a bill percentage is guessing.

Is the Trane XV18 still the current model?

The name is retired. Trane refreshed the lineup in 2025 for R-454B, and the XV18 address on trane.com now serves the “18 TruComfort Variable Speed Heat Pump.”

Does the warranty cover the service call when a part fails?

No. Trane furnishes the part. Labor is excluded, and the certificate names diagnostic calls and removal and reinstallation, plus freight, refrigerant and line sets. My service call is $210 flat either way.
