The Trane 20 TruComfort Variable Speed Heat Pump In Oklahoma: What Modulation Actually Changes

Is the top of the line worth it, or am I paying for a badge? I started at 18, I have been at this 47 years, and I have sold Trane for 10 of the 15 plus years I have run my shop in Kingfisher. Master HVAC License, NATE certified, 4.8 stars, 300+ Google reviews.

Short answer: the comfort difference is real, and the energy case is weaker in Oklahoma than the brochures imply.

Single Stage, Two Stage, Variable Speed

A single stage compressor has one setting: full output or off. Trane’s XR14 heat pump is single stage, up to 14.8 SEER2 and 7.8 HSPF2, and Trane’s own brochure footnotes that it does not meet ENERGY STAR requirements. That is Trane saying it, not me.

A two stage compressor adds a low setting for mild days. In this part of Trane’s range that is the XR16, up to 16.2 SEER2 and 8.1 HSPF2, and I do not carry it. You will see the XR15 called two stage in plenty of places. Trane’s own heat pump brochure names it the XR15 Single-Stage Heat Pump. There is no low setting on it.

Variable speed modulates from 25 to 100 percent of capacity, matching what your house is losing or gaining right now. In the lines I stock there is no two stage rung: single stage straight to variable speed.

What It Changes When You Live With It

Humidity

People notice this first, and in an Oklahoma August it is the ballgame. A coil pulls water out of the air the whole time it is cold and air moves across it. A single stage system satisfies the thermostat fast, shuts off, and quits dehumidifying. A modulating compressor runs longer at lower output, so the coil stays wet for more of the hour. Same number on the wall, different feel in the room. No percentage from me: I have no measured one.

Run Time And Swing

Long steady runs hold a tighter band around your setpoint than short full blast ones. If a west bedroom runs warm by four, part of that is duct design and part is a system that only knows all out or off. Modulation will not fix bad ductwork, but it softens the swing.

Noise

The loudest moment in any cycle is the start, and a modulating compressor spends most of its life nowhere near full output. But I will not hand you a decibel number, because I have no measured one to give you.

The Numbers Trane Publishes, And Why I Will Not Quote You One

The unit people mean by top tier Trane is the XV20i, up to 20.5 SEER2 as a heat pump. The step below, the XV18, is up to 18.0 SEER2 and 8.5 HSPF2, also variable speed.

Those ratings belong to a lineup that has been replaced. Trane refreshed this portfolio in 2025 for the R-454B refrigerant change and renamed it: the 20 TruComfort Variable Speed Heat Pump with WeatherGuard replaces the XV20i, and the XV18 became the 18 TruComfort. The XR15 became the 16 Single Stage Heat Pump, up to 17 SEER2 and 8.5 HSPF2 on the new refrigerant. That is the only current figure Trane publishes: its variable speed pages now list no SEER2 at all. If somebody quotes a crisp efficiency figure on a new R-454B variable speed Trane, ask where he got it.

Second reason: a rating belongs to one certified outdoor and indoor combination, not the outdoor unit alone, and the same condenser on a different coil can certify lower. I pull the certified rating for the exact pair I propose and put it on your estimate.

Does The Step Up Pay For Itself In Oklahoma

Baseline first. For split system heat pumps the national minimum is 14.3 SEER2 and 7.5 HSPF2. Oklahoma sits in the DOE Southeast region, which adds a higher floor for air conditioners, but that rule does not apply to heat pumps.

Now the arithmetic. SEER2 is cooling delivered divided by electricity consumed, so electricity scales inversely with the rating. 14.3 divided by 18.0 is about 0.79: an 18.0 SEER2 unit uses roughly 20 percent less cooling season electricity than one at the floor. 14.3 divided by 20.5 is about 0.70, so the top tier uses roughly 30 percent less. That is a ratio for equal cooling output, not 30 percent off your bill, which also turns on load, run hours, rate, sizing, charge and duct losses.

Now the part nobody selling equipment likes to say. Oklahoma power is cheap: 13.38 cents per kilowatt hour in May 2026 against a national average of 18.44, roughly 27 percent below the rest of the country. The same percentage saved is worth fewer dollars here, which stretches every payback.

Run hours argue the other way. Oklahoma City’s 1991 to 2020 normal mean temperature is 60.1 degrees, and our cooling season is long. Cooling is rated at 95 degrees outdoor air, but the 1 percent summer design temperature across the seven counties I serve runs 99 to 101: the rating was taken on an easier day than the one you care about. Heating runs in your favor. The low temperature rating point is 17 degrees and our winter design low is 13, or 15 in Blaine, so a heat pump here works near its rated condition even in the coldest hour of a normal winter.

I will not hand you a payback year off a web page, because I would have to invent your usage to get one.

What Can Settle It Before Price Does

Sizing. Trane’s current variable speed pages list 2, 3, 4 and 5 ton; the single stage pages list 1.5 through 5. If your load lands at 2.5 or 3.5 ton, that narrows the field before anybody talks money.

The tax credit. The residential 25D credit has expired. There is no federal residential credit to lean on here. Commercial falls under Section 48. Take it to your tax professional.

Rebates. On Alfalfa Electric Cooperative in Garfield or Major County, an air source heat pump draws $150 per ton, a ground source system $1,050 per ton. The OMPA rebate of up to $800 per cooling ton is geothermal, requires a desuperheater, and does not apply to an air source heat pump. Up to means a cap, not a guarantee.

The Warranty Part Nobody Reads

Register the equipment after install or you drop to Trane’s shorter base terms automatically. Both the base and the registered terms depend on the product family and on the certificate that governs your install, so I put that certificate in front of you instead of quoting a term off a web page. What does not change is what a limited warranty actually does. Trane’s obligation is to furnish a replacement part: not labor, not the diagnostic call, not refrigerant, line sets or filters. It covers the original owner and spouse at the installed address, and requires a licensed installer who follows Trane’s instructions.

How I Would Decide

Buy the variable speed if summer humidity is what bothers you, if somebody is home during the day, and if you are staying long enough to live with it. Skip it for a rental or short hold, or if your load lands at a tonnage the line does not cover. The best compressor built cannot outrun leaky ducts. Call 405-375-4822.

Questions I Get Asked

What does it cost to have you come look at my heat pump?

$210 flat: $99 dispatch plus $111 diagnostic. The $111 is not credited toward the repair. The $111 diagnostic is not credited or refunded. If a written residential repair estimate is accepted within 10 days, the $99 dispatch fee may be returned as the applicable repair credit. A new system estimate is free.

Is there still a tax credit for a high efficiency heat pump?

The residential 25D credit has expired, and I will not soften that. Commercial projects fall under Section 48, which is separate. Take your situation to a tax professional.

Can I swap just the outside unit and keep my old indoor coil?

Sometimes physically, but know what you give up. The rating belongs to a certified outdoor and indoor combination, and the same unit on a different coil can certify lower. ENERGY STAR depends on the coil too. Mismatch the indoor side and you did not get what you paid for.

Do you finance a new system, and what does a tune-up run?

Synchrony, Wells Fargo, Wisetack, Klarna and JB Financing; I go through which one fits at the estimate. A standalone AC tune-up is $229. Plans: One Visit Spring or Fall 360 $199; Spring and Fall 360 $360, 10 percent repair discount up to $300 and two filters installed; Full Year 360 $499, same discount, filters all year, and the $198 emergency dispatch waived twice a plan year. The $111 diagnostic is still charged.

Do you work in my town?

Daily service in seven counties: Kingfisher, Canadian, Oklahoma, Garfield, Major, Logan and Blaine. Geothermal I do statewide across Oklahoma.
