A furnace burns gas and makes heat. A heat pump moves heat already in the outside air into your house, using a compressor and refrigerant, and runs backward in summer to move heat out instead. That’s why the air feels different: a furnace pushes very hot air, a heat pump moves warm air, and both raise the house temperature, they just feel different doing it. The colder it gets, the less heat there is to grab, so a heat pump’s capacity shrinks as the temperature drops, and every home also loses heat faster as it gets colder. Balance point is where those two lines cross: what your house loses exactly equals what the heat pump alone can deliver. Above it, the heat pump keeps up on its own. Below it, it’s still contributing, it just can’t do the whole job alone. Balance point depends on insulation, sizing, and duct condition, which is why I look at the whole house on a service call, not just the equipment in the yard.

Why Your Outdoor Unit Steams, And Why That’s Normal

When it’s cold and humid, moisture in the air freezes onto your outdoor coil the same way frost builds on a windshield, and left alone it would choke the unit’s ability to pull heat from the air. So the system runs a defrost cycle: it briefly reverses into cooling mode and sends warm refrigerant to the coil to melt the frost off, usually for several minutes.
