Retrofitting El Reno’s Route 66-era homes

El Reno’s housing stock is older than people realize. The neighborhoods north of Sunset Drive and along the Route 66 corridor are full of 1940s through 1960s brick homes, many of them slab-on-grade single stories with a finished attic or a converted second floor. Several of those second floors never had real ductwork, just a single floor register pulling warm air up the stairwell. When I drop a geothermal system into one of those houses, the loop install is honestly the easy part. The duct redesign is where the real work happens.

My standard El Reno retrofit playbook on a 1950s brick rancher: I run a full Manual J load calculation, lay out the loop based on lot size and well-water table considerations, and then sit down with the homeowner about second-floor airflow. Usually that means routing a flex supply through a back closet and adding a dedicated return on each finished level.
