The Job

This is a big geothermal home just outside Edmond, the kind of property with several heat pumps instead of one, all of them tied into a ground loop instead of an outdoor condenser. Geothermal is the quietest and most efficient way to heat and cool a house this size, but it is also a system most heating and air companies in Central Oklahoma never touch, because they do not work on water-source equipment and they do not understand the loop. I do. I am IGSHPA accredited for geothermal, I put this WaterFurnace Premier Series system in years ago, and I have been the one keeping these units running ever since.

I installed these WaterFurnace water-source units, and I never left the property. Over the years I have done geothermal tune-ups, run diagnostics when a unit went down, replaced blower motors and control boards, cleared condensate problems, and checked the desuperheater that makes the home’s hot water. • Ground loop and flow center: the units pull and reject heat through the loop in the ground, not the outside air. The loop pump and flow center are part of the system, and they are part of what a geothermal tech has to understand that a normal HVAC tech never sees.
• Desuperheater hot water: these units carry a desuperheater, which uses waste heat from cooling to help heat the home’s water. There is a large electric storage water heater on site that ties into the geothermal hot-water side.

Why It Mattered

A geothermal home is a great house to own and a hard house to get serviced. What is a desuperheater on a geothermal heat pump?

A desuperheater is a small extra heat exchanger inside the geothermal heat pump that grabs waste heat while the system is cooling and uses it to help heat your domestic hot water. The units on the Edmond estate carry a desuperheater, and there is a large electric storage water heater on site that ties into the geothermal hot-water side.
