Geothermal In New Construction Oklahoma: Plan The Loop Before The Slab
I’ve walked more than one new build where the homeowner had already picked cabinets and paint colors, and nobody had talked to them yet about the ground loop. That’s backward. If you’re building a house anywhere in Oklahoma and you want geothermal, the loop decision has to happen before the foundation crew shows up, not after the yard is sodded and the sprinklers are trenched in. I’m Dave Hartzell. I’ve been in HVAC 47 years, started at 18, and I’ve owned Hartzell’s Heat & Air in Kingfisher for 15 plus years. Geothermal is something I do statewide, and new construction is where I can save you the most money, if you bring me in early enough to matter.
Why This Can’t Wait For The Punch List
A geothermal system changes decisions locked in long before drywall goes up. The load calculation that sizes your equipment drives duct sizing and air handler placement, and that calc looks different for a water source heat pump than a gas furnace and straight air conditioner. If your builder’s HVAC sub already roughed in ductwork for a conventional system, fitting geothermal into that layout later means working around choices that don’t match what geothermal needs.
The electrical panel and circuit runs get planned early too. A geothermal heat pump draws differently than a standard AC condenser, and if the electrician already set the panel for a furnace and AC plan, you’re fighting decisions already in the wall. The loop supply and return lines usually need to come up through or alongside the foundation, so those penetrations have to be planned while the slab is still being formed, not chipped in after the concrete cures.
None of this is complicated if I’m in the room during framing and rough in. It gets expensive and awkward if I’m not.
Loop Placement Against Your Site Work
Where the loop goes depends on your lot. I use vertical bores when the lot is tight or the yard will finish right up to the house, horizontal loops when there’s enough open ground to trench instead of drill, and a pond loop when there’s a pond or lake on the property that can carry it. Which one fits your lot is part of what I walk through with you during a free new-system estimate, before anything gets poured.
Whichever loop type fits, it has to get coordinated against everything else happening on that lot: the septic field, the driveway, water and sewer utility trenches, a propane tank if you’re running one. All of that needs to be marked and routed around the loop area, not through it, and that only works if the loop location gets set at the same table as the site plan.
The other piece is access. A drill rig or trenching equipment needs a clear path to the loop area, and that’s easiest while the lot is still open dirt. Ideally the loop goes in around the same time as the foundation work or right after, while there’s still a construction entrance and no finished driveway or fence in the way.
What Retrofitting After Landscaping Actually Costs You
Here’s the scenario I try to head off. The house gets built with a conventional system because nobody planned the loop in time. A year or two later the homeowner wants geothermal after all, but by then the yard is sodded, the sprinklers are in, maybe there’s a finished patio. Installing the loop now means cutting sprinkler lines, tearing out sod, and working a trencher or bore rig around landscaping that wasn’t there when the lot was bare dirt.
I’m not going to hand you a made up multiplier, because every lot is different. What’s consistent is the pattern: less access and more finished ground to restore always costs more than the same loop as straightforward dirt work before landscaping went in. If geothermal is even a maybe for your new build, get the loop conversation on the table before the sod truck shows up. That’s the decision that keeps this affordable.
The Driller I Bring In
I don’t own a drill rig, and I’m not going to tell you I do. For vertical bores, I bring in a driller I trust to handle that part of the job. I coordinate the loop design and everything that ties into the house, the driller handles the bore work, and I’m on site managing how the two pieces come together. We work as a team on any size project, from a single residential loop to a bigger commercial job. That partnership is exactly why timing matters: the earlier we’re both looped in on your site plan, the cleaner the access and the fewer surprises once equipment shows up.
What Geothermal Costs To Plan Into A New Build
A new system estimate is free. I’ll walk the lot with you before anything is poured and talk through where the loop makes sense against your site plan.
On the loop itself, a vertical bore typically needs around 200 feet of bore per ton. Loop size follows directly from your home’s tonnage, which comes out of the load calc I run for your house, one more reason that calc needs to happen early: it’s the number everything else gets built around. I don’t publish a loop price, because bore footage and ground conditions move it. Your number comes on the free estimate, after I’ve walked the lot.
On paying for it, I work with five financing partners: Synchrony, up to 18 months at 0% on qualifying plans, Wells Fargo, Wisetack, Klarna, and JB Financing. Financing covers the whole job, not just equipment, when cost is the barrier.
On rebates, check your utility before you finalize anything. In an OMPA municipal town, including Kingfisher, Okeene, and Watonga, OMPA pays up to $800 per ton on a geothermal install. That’s a cap, not a guarantee, and it requires a desuperheater to qualify. Under Alfalfa Electric Cooperative in Garfield or Major County, the rebate runs $1,050 per ton for ground source against just $150 per ton for air source.
One thing I won’t do is promise a federal tax credit. The residential 25D credit has expired. Check the IRS and ENERGY STAR sites directly and talk to a tax professional for the current word. Commercial geothermal runs under Section 48, not 48E, another conversation for your accountant. I won’t promise you a utility rebate either. Those programs belong to your utility, not to me, and the figures above are caps with their own rules. Confirm with your town or co-op first.

How much bore field does my house actually need?
