Heat Pump Sizing In Oklahoma: Why The Load Calculation Beats The Efficiency Rating
Most people shopping for a heat pump ask about the efficiency number first. SEER2, HSPF2, what is the highest one I can get. I started in this trade at 18, and in 47 years I have never seen a high efficiency rating rescue a system that was sized wrong. Oversized systems leave a house clammy in August.
What A Manual J Load Calculation Actually Is
Manual J is the industry’s load calculation procedure. It answers one question: how much heat has to move out of this house, or into it, to hold your temperature on the hottest and coldest hours it will realistically see? That is the load, and equipment gets picked to match it. A real one is done room by room:
- Outdoor design temperatures for your county, heating and cooling
- Window area, glass type, and which direction each window faces
- Insulation in the walls, the ceiling and the floor
- How tight or how leaky the house is
- Where the ducts run, and whether they sit in unconditioned attic heat
The Design Temperatures I Start From
ENERGY STAR publishes ASHRAE-basis design temperatures county by county. For the seven counties I run daily service in:

Those are not record highs and lows, just conditions exceeded a small share of hours in a normal year. Sizing to the record is a common way a system ends up too big. They also show the gap between lab and field: cooling capacity is rated at 95 degrees entering the outdoor coil, while the design day across these counties runs 99 to 101. Heating is closer: a 17 degree rating point against a 13 degree design temperature, so a heat pump here works near its rated condition even on the coldest design hour.
Why Square Footage Alone Is A Guess
The shortcut is so many square feet per ton. Fast, free, and wrong often enough to matter. Two houses the same size on the same street in Okarche can land on different tonnages, because square footage cannot see window orientation, insulation, air leakage, duct location or shade. If nobody measured your windows or looked in your attic, you got a guess with a decimal point on it.
What Oversizing Does To Humidity In An Oklahoma August
Cooling does two jobs at once. It drops air temperature, and it pulls moisture out of the air crossing a cold coil. The temperature job happens fast. The moisture job takes run time.
An oversized system satisfies the thermostat before it has run long enough to do the second job. It blasts, hits setpoint, shuts down, then repeats twenty minutes later. The thermostat reads 74 while the house feels damp, because the moisture never left. That is the cold-and-sticky August complaint, and it is usually a sizing problem, not a refrigerant one.
Under AHRI Standard 210/240, cooling capacity is measured with 80 degree dry bulb and 67 degree wet bulb air entering the indoor coil, running steady. Nothing in that test resembles a machine that runs eight minutes and quits.
Staging Helps, And It Is Not A Substitute For Sizing
Trane publishes a capacity variability figure for every unit it builds. On a single-stage unit it reads 100 percent: flat out or off. On its variable-speed heat pumps it reads 25 to 100 percent, so the machine throttles down and holds a long, low, steady run. Long runs dehumidify a house.
That is still no license to skip the calculation. A variable-speed unit two tons too big lives at the bottom of its range and short cycles anyway. Trane’s variable-speed pages list only 2, 3, 4 and 5 nominal tons against 1.5 through 5 on single-stage, so fewer size steps means the load number matters more.
The Efficiency Rating Does Not Belong To The Outdoor Unit
A SEER2 rating is not a property of the condenser in your yard. It belongs to one certified combination of that outdoor unit and one particular indoor coil, and a different coil changes the rating. DOE enforces the standard at the combination level, and coil-only ratings generally come in lower than matched blower-coil ratings. So when an ad says 18 SEER2, the honest question is: 18 with what indoor unit?
A split-system heat pump built on or after January 1, 2023 has to hit 14.3 SEER2 and 7.5 HSPF2. That is one national floor, the same number in every state. SEER2 is cooling delivered across a season divided by electricity consumed, so 14.3 divided by 18 is about 0.79: an 18 SEER2 system uses roughly 20 percent less cooling-season electricity. That is real and I sell it honestly. But read the condition bolted to it: for the identical cooling job. Sizing defines the job.
Sizing errors cut both ways. Undersize a heat pump and electric strip heat covers the gap at a COP of 1.0, one unit of heat for one unit of electricity, where the heat pump itself moves several times that on the same power.
Why Sizing Matters Even More On Geothermal
Geothermal is not rated on outdoor air at all. Under ISO 13256-1 it is rated on entering water temperature: for a closed ground loop, 32 degrees in heating and 77 degrees in cooling. That rating point holds still while the weather moves, which is why geothermal holds up on a 101 degree afternoon.
The calculation matters more here, not less. On a conventional system a sizing mistake means the wrong box, which can be changed. On geothermal that same calculation sizes the ground loop, and a vertical loop runs roughly 200 bore feet per ton at a loop cost basis around $3,000 per ton. Get the tonnage wrong and you paid to drill a hole you cannot resize.
Rebates are calculated by the ton, too. OMPA pays up to $800 per cooling ton in municipal towns like Kingfisher, Okeene and Watonga, a cap and not a guarantee, and it requires a desuperheater. When money moves per ton, you want a measured tonnage, not a rule of thumb.
